I was just wondering today, what if the monks made the key into a boy and made it Buffys brother instead of a girl and Buffys sister. How would the charecter change and how do you think it would affect Season5?

Hmm well one thing off the top of my head would be the whole Spike Dawn dynamic. It probably wouldn't have been the same.
Then, Buffy and Dawn as sisters are so close. Sisters in general can be so close. (Like my sis and I, we are BEST friends.)
Also, making her a teenage girl, there's the whole 'protecting' factor, would everyone have felt as protective over a guy? I'm not too sure. Interesting question though I'll have to think about it more!

Good question, never thought about it before. I agree with the points Jenny raised. It would have been a less protective relationship between Buffy and sibling. The nature of society is theres generally more fear for a young girl, which raises the tension. plus a 15 year old boy could be quite capable of taking care of them selves (not that young women can't of course 🙂 but not in Dawns case). Which would have probably have made the brother younger.
I'm not really sure, there are so many variables to consider 🙂

Then I think he would have to be younger, like 10 or maybe even younger then that. It would be very sweet though...😀

Well Dawn was orignally set to be younger, she only became 15 because Michelle was perfect for the role and well she was 15 at the time. So the brother would probably be around 9-10.

What I want to know is, since there was the whole 'the blood is the key thing'... why didn't the monks just make the key into a hunk of wood or metal and be done with it?
They could have done what Spike suggested and made it into a bumper. Glory would never have been able to get blood out of it and the apocalypse would have been averted before it even had the chance to start. Making it into a person just seems to have been a bad idea.

They should have made the key a goldfish. That way, it would die in a week and then Glory couldn't get back, apocalypse averted.

well what if Willow took Goldie to her dorm room then Kitty Fanstico ate him? Then Glory wouldnt be so happy that the little kitty ate her key neither would Buffy.

My thought on that was more like they had to consume all of you...I don't know...its just kinda crazy speculation.

I was hoping this was gonna be a "come up with alternative keys" thread. Was gonna suggest the hand puppet of love, that Xander must defend. But Anya would get jealous, would be a crazy love triangle!
Anyway as a boy would be interesting, but maybe they planned on making the whole "Is Dawn a Slayer?" thing for season seven, so it couldn't be a boy. Although that might of been interesting to see, having a potential male...potential.

She's just so cool
Although, she was made from Buffy's blood. Even if she wasn't the Slayer, there are certain hormones in female's blood as opposed to a male's. Dawn would've always had to be female.

It would have half changed the intire stofyline of season five.....like with dawn and spike, dawn being so sensetive, being so touchy.......all that would have changed and probly more

Of course Dawn couldn't have become a boy that would totally undermine the entire series. I mean Dawn's the next generation, it's all about women power and stuff like that and if Buffy would have had a brother rthere could be no sharing of the power. And in a really hardline feminist point of view her sacrificing her life in order to save her brother would look a lot different (and not as "glorious") from sacrificing her life for a sister.
