So, I was curious about this. Fans of Buffy come from all over the world, all ages, all races, all sexes (well, there's just 2 lol). Those things are supposed to mean that particular groups would like the things other groups wouldn't. But Buffy fans come from all kinds. So what I wanted to know is, what drove you to become a Buffy fan? What's so appealing in this show? I guess there isn't one thing in particular. But share! What got you into Buffy that made you a fan, more than other shows?

I watched it growing up and liked the action and the fact that it was girls kicking ass- it made it a bit more relateable than other shows that were very male centred. Now I love it because it's still relateable in the way that the writing really does reflect what it's like to grow up and some of the troubles that arise during adolescence. Plus the script is funny and well written and the characters are entertaining.

Haha that makes me sound a bit obsessed..

I think we're all obsessed here (:
I used to watch it when I was little. Most of my family did. Sad to say I "grew out of it" in the later seasons. I remember we stopped watching because "it got stupid" with Buffy dying or Willow becoming a lesbian. I was young, so I just didn't get it, lol. I guess whatever my parents thought, I thought too.

Last year, I kept thinking about it. I remembered watching it when I was little, had more than enough time on my hands, and figured hey? Why not give it a shot?

I was hooked about three episodes in 😛

It's funny too, because I got my mom back into when I did once it started playing on LOGO, and now she doesn't think it's stupid anymore either.

Well I didn't get into the Whedon world until 2008. I had just finished watching Charmed and I loved Charmed so I decided to give Angel a try since it played in the mornings on TNT before Charmed. The first episode I saw was Birthday and I fell in love with Cordy/Angel they are the reason I decided to watch Angel. I watched it out of order for a bit until I finally got the dvds and then once I got to season 4 or 5 of Angel I can't remember I decided I would give Buffy a try just so I could see what I had missed of Cordy and Angel's characters. I liked the first season but almost gave up during the second season cause I was so bored. Then I finally saw the third season and fell in love with Buffy too. But Angel will always be my favorite.

But I wouldn't be a fan if it werent for Cangel. They are why I got into the verse and they are why I stayed. I love them more then any couple from any show ever.

Ohhhh, I get you more now!! Haha
I'll start by saying I didn't want to watch Buffy. I had this opinion it was a show for convention going losers and I wasn't one of them. But it had ties to a lot of things I liked and I decided I had to check it out. After I decided I had to, it took me a few weeks to actually muster up the "courage" to sit down and watch it.

I started watching with my sister.. I remember watching Welcome to the Hellmouth and turning to her saying "Wow, this really isn't bad." And she said "no, I actually kind of like it." And I said "me too. I want to know what happens now... I mean, I know she doesn't die but..." So we went on to The Harvest (I think it was a really good idea for the first episode to end on a cliffhanger). The Harvest was good... but it wasn't until The Witch that I was hooked. I liked it's smart, witty humor and I LOVED to the whole "this is what it feels to be a teenager... in this show, it's actually that" thing. So that was when I said "I love this show." I think I fell in love with it when Spike came in School Hard. Spike was such an awesome character and I adored him... I only fell further in love as time went on.

Probably what made me is just the writing. I loved how real the stories were and funny it all was in the end. There were a lot of sad parts too that I could relate to. I just was into the stories. I saw SMG at the '98 MTV awards and thats when I started to watch the show. I accidently was flipping around at night and it was on. It was the Kendra episode I remember because that accent she had was so funny. That was probably where it all began.

The episode "When She Was Bad." I started watching Buffy from the beginning but didn't think much of it, so I skipped to S2, and needless to say I was hooked. I don't get into shows very easily, and for me to like a show, for it to, well, click for me, there needs to be a moment, usually an episode that makes me think, "this show is good." If that made any sense. 😛 (For Angel it was "To Shanshu in L.A.")

And, Buffy's dialogue certainly helped. I just love movies or shows with great, quippy dialogue.

"ANGEL" made me a "Buffy" fan.

In 1999 I started seeing some commercials for this new show on The WB called "ANGEL", and it featured this guy in a black coat, kicking a bit of ass and he had really cool hair. Didn't know a thing about it, or him, but the commercials were enough to get me to watch the October 5, 1999 premiere. After the teaser and opening credit sequence, I was stunned at what I had seen because I never saw things like that action sequence in the alley before, except for in movies. Never on television.

It was just great. I knew so little about this that I didn't know the man was a vampire until his face transformed and even then it wasn't until Doyle explained things that I started to grasp the concept.

As season 4 of "Buffy" was airing back-to-back with this, I glanced at it but didn't pay much attention since I had no idea what was going on, but watched the crossover episodes (announced as "The WB Buffy/Angel Crossover Event") and often found myself confused about things. Elements that came from Buffy - vampire concepts and rules, events and most importantly characters - who was this Wesley guy? Who is the blond Sid Vicious wannabe? Darla? Cordelia was rich at one point? Why is Seth Green suddenly making an appearance? Harmony is a vampire but wasn't before? Who is Drusilla?

You get the idea.

Cut to 2001, and season 3 is on the horizon, but before that "Buffy" is about to hit TV 5 days a week here in Canada on a channel called "Space", and I finally had the chance to catch up on who Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, Darla and others were, in addition to their history. I can finally understand all the details.

As I watched the broadcast reruns, season 1 of "Buffy" on DVD hit store shelves and I picked it up for the sake of it. To sum this up now, let me just say that waiting for the season 2 DVD set and eventually season 3 DVD set to arrive in stores was hell, and then some because I couldn't wait to see them again, this time whenever I wanted and with extras.

My biggest regret in all of this, is that I didn't watch it from its 1997 premiere and follow it like I did "ANGEL". One thing DVD and syndication can never replicate is the sense of anticipation, the shock of revelations and cliffhangers all of which are only truly felt when watching the original first-run broadcasts. The trailers (WB's trailers for both shows were spectacular), the agony of waiting for mid-season reruns and holiday breaks to finish...all of that.

Each show appeals to different sides of me:

"Buffy" is sort of what I wish my life could've been - that close-knit group of friends hanging out and living life's ups and downs together. Seasons 1 to 3 are my favorites because they best represent that ideal I had always wanted but never had in high school. When I watch those seasons, moreso than the latter ones I am in my room, door closed, lights out just sitting there....no one else in the room with me but I don't feel alone with those four misfits of Buffy, Giles, Xander and Willow on screen, with Cordelia and others popping by.

With Buffy representing the ideal, "ANGEL" is what my life was - isolated, cut off from people, from the world. You see him sit in the dark alone, no TV, no lamp on, just sit. I'd done that when suddenly there's a character on television who does the same thing. Sometimes I still do. Angel and his journey on his series became my new ideal, watching him grow and surround himself with a small family unit that kept changing, sometimes it fragmented, sometimes it just shattered and the pieces never fit anymore but it was more true to life (for me, anyway) and more of who I wanted to be, and still do.

So each show is very different to me, and each show appeals to different parts of me more than any other shows I've ever seen.

You almost made me cry with the last part of your post. When I watch, it's just me too. I can watch it anywhere and feel like I'm home.

Love your whole post. LOL at "he had really cool hair"
When I first saw the show, I thought it was "ok" but I didn't get hooked right away. It wasn't until the second season that I really got into it. I admit, the Buffy/Angel romance was what initially drew me in. I'm a sucker for romance, and at that time in my life I totally identified with Buffy feeling like an outsider at school and wanting so badly to fit in. But I also really identified with Willow feeling like a spaz and pining for her sarcastic best friend, 'cause I felt the same way. It was mostly the characters and their romances and emotions that got to me and kept me watching. I grew to love the characters as if they were my friends, because each person on the show reminded me of someone in my life.

In 1997 I was just a kid aged 9 lol. But my dad wanted to watch this new show that was starting at the time so i watched it with him and it was Buffy! So I guess I kind of grew up on it because since the first ep me and my dad watched it on a weekly basis together because my mum and sister hated it lol! He would buy me anything Buffy related and that made me kinda obsessed which has carried through to this day 😀

Nice father support!
I was always just a fan of Charmed, so there was a long time no reason for me to watch Buffy.
But in 2003, I watched "Showtime" by accident, that was the very first I watched a whole episode and I really really started liking the whole show. Consequently I watched the remaining episodes of season 7. And so day, I got interested into the whole show, so I bought all DVD's and didn't regret anything. 😀

I was watching it with my mum while aired, so I was very young. I liked the action of it. I was already a big Xena fan and I had make Judo for two years and I didn't mind fighting with boys. So I loved the fact that Buffy was able to fight like that.
Then I loved Buffy's death. It's the moment I went from "nice ass-kicking show" to "...WAH *.*". I liked the humor, and how emotionnal it was. And I loved Tara and Willow to death. I thought it was great to have a gay ship in a show. But I still was quite young.
As I rewatch and rewatch, I always find something new to love. I know now how much of a complex show it is, human, relatable,...Buffy became my ultimate show. The one I love the most. The acting is amazing, the actor can play now in as many bad thing as they want, Buffy is the proof of their acting skills. I love the witiness. I love the relationships. I can relate to so many character. I identify with so many relationships. It made me a better person. It made me independant. Strong. It opened my mind (not that I was close-minded, it just broadened it even more). It made me more tolerant. Made me forget about manicheism. If Buffy didn't exist, I don't know where I would be now. Or who. Or what. All I know is that Buffy made me. Shaped me. Inspired me. It made me a better person. A better friend. It made me love life more. It helped me through tough times.
And that is the reason why I love the show so much. Love isn't even a strong enough word.
It's about how witty it is, how brilliant, and more importantly, how life-changing it was for me.

Wow. I LOVE how you explained it! It's so true!!! :D And Tillow karma! ;)
I actually don't remember when I watched the re-runs I just watched it and for some reason took to it. Then when I got the dvds I just fell in love. It was everything the action, the story and how funny it was at the same time. I also had a soft spot for Buffy and Angel and their story.

Meh, I've probably told my story many times but I find that all my stories of how I got into things like this are fairly interesting and dramatic and I'll admitt that I enjoy telling them.

At present I am fifteen years old and until this year I had never seen an episode of Buffy...ever. I had heard the title of it and vaguely knew that she was some random vampire hunter or whatever but I had no idea about anything else. The characters, the plot, the actors or actresses. I was isolated from all of that by my family.

My family is hugely religious in a strange way. Christains and proud of it. I'm a Christian too but I fail to grasp why being a Christian means I can't like what I want to. It's a fictional concept, not real for petes sake. But I never questioned it until fairly recently.
I was steered away from things such as 'Harry Potter' and 'Buffy' when I was a kid because they had dark elements or were 'evil' as my Grandmother put it. But I find, if you're forbidden to do something, eventually it catches up with you until you can't take it anymore.

I'm not sure if you can call what I developed a 'rebelious' streak or not but in my house that's what it was. First I read four of the Harry Potter books before my mother caught me. I kept pushing, not caring who I hurt really or what my mother thought. But she got over the Harry Potter incident and we carried on for awhile.
Then my amazing Social Studies teacher Mr. Goddard came into the picture.

I think it was near the begining of this year, end of term. We were all sitting in the classroom on the last day with a TV in front of us. He had three things for us to choose from. Something I can't even remember the name of, Ice Age and Buffy. Let's just say...none of us wanted to watch Ice Age so the majority of us voted for Buffy. That included me, I think in the back of my mind I suddenly got curious to see what I had been missing. A somewhat burning desire and all of that.

And so, we watched 'Once More, With Feeling'. Too be completely honest, I wasn't sure. Or at least I put on a 'Ooookay' face for the rest of my class. We were all kind of laughing at how bad they were at singing and all of that but really I think I was enjoying it. I thought it was funny, witty and interesting and the songs were actually quite good. I was the only person in my class who was interested and I left for the library during morning tea to log onto the computers and research a bit.

But that all died down. I wanted to show my younger sister the episode on YouTube but I couldn't find it and so I just left it for months. It wasn't until about a month ago that I actually re-delved into the Buffy universe.

I can't remember what posessed me to search Once More, With Feeling on YouTube again but something did. And I got my sister up into my room and we watched it together. Both of us loved it this time around and proceeded to watch it again once my friend Natalie came over. All of us had fun and from that moment I was interested.

And so, I was sick not long after that and lying on my bed with nothing to do. I wasn't sure if I wanted to get into another 'secret' thing, hiding from my mother but I was bored and so I watched 'Welcome to the Hellmouth' on YouTube. Let's just say that I loved it. The dialogue made me laugh and the ideas were amazing. Not to mention I had some shudder moments with the dead guy in the locker and thought the theme song was amazing. Oh, yeah. And I thought Sarah Michelle Gellar was gorgeous.

So I proceeded to watch the first five episodes on my bed but halfway through the fifth I kind of gave it up. I was getting jumpy cause of how loud some of the screams were and such and didn't want my mother bursting in. So I left it until later.

I will tell you that I did finish the season, halfway through I told my mother and interjected whenever she argued. I got her to get used to it and now she even pays for DVDs and such. It's funny. I watched that season and then the first half of the second season until our downloading ran out. Then we got the third season, fourth season, first half of the fifth season, sixth season and first half of the seventh season from the video store. We've watched all of that now and I'm in love with the show.

It's probably the witty dialogue that I love so much. That and the amazing characters and acting and the normality of it all despite the supernatural stuff.

Okay, so that was a long and somewhat pointless story but whatever. 🙂

I'm Christian-Catholic and I can point out some religious themes in Buffy and also in HP, if you're ever curious :)
The first episode that I ever saw was "Once More With Feeling," that a friend asked me to tape for her because she was going to be out of town, and that one episode hooked me. The first thing that attracted me was how well the actors worked together, which was to be expected, of course, since by that time they had had 5 full seasons to practice, and were well into year 6, especially the little blond girl (whose martial arts technique could have definitely stood some improvement) and the guy in the black leather trench coat. At that time, I had no idea that he was a vampire, souled or otherwise. The rest is history.

I always knew Buffy was a ground-breaking show and had a huge following, even after the show ended. But I never had time to watch it when it originally aired, which ironically was when I was in high school, lol. However, when I signed up with Netflix this past summer, I saw that all the episodes were on the instant queue. So, it sparked my interest. Plus, with the whole vampire craze now (yet, I despise Twilight), I wanted to watch it, since Buffy came before the vampire shows/movies today. So, I started at the very beginning, having seen no other episodes beforehand.

After only the first episode, I was hooked. Buffy and all the characters kept me wanting more. As I continued to watch all the seasons, I only became more invested and obsessed, lol! Both the writing and acting were incredible in every season. It was actually refreshing watching BtVS (and then moving on to AtS) because there's so many underlying themes to the basic storyline. God knows I never got that with Twilight, lol! And although I'm a True Blood fan, I think Buffy ranks higher than True Blood on my list now 🙂

I started watching True Blood before Buffy, too, but it doesn't compare.
I dunno what made me a fan. I saw the original airing of Reptile Boy at 8 and all I wanted was more. I was - and, ahem, still am - a huge Power Ranger fan. I loved the kick-butt teenager thing and Buffy had that, only for teens. Pretty people kicking butt, something I wanted so desperately to be! And, it was funny and SMG was amazing. Loved the Snarkiness of Cordy and I was somewhat of a misfit like Xander and Will but I got along with everybody. I was infatuated with Buffy's romance with vampire Angel. I flaunted that I was into this adult-teen show, I was so proud of myself. Definately had a big part in my developement, more than I would care to admit as it's just a TV show to most but to me I can watch it anywhere and feel like I am back in my old basement with my friends going through their motions. My biggest inspiration.

I loved the original Power Rangers. I was in Walmart a few days ago and saw hallowe'en costumes for them - those same originals. They renamed the White Ranger to the "Special Ranger". Hello political correctness....
What attracted me to the show?

Primarily the ultra high quality of the writing. It is razor sharp 90% of the time.

Secondly, it's awesome to see the women of Buffy fight, particularly in later seasons where it is a more acrobatic and full on style.

I LOVE your banner! :D
the Buffy character. I got so tired of watching movies with the wimpy females who fell victim to the rapist or whatever and when I saw it for the first time I said at last a female who can get the drop on the bad guys and kick their butt as well while looking so good and stylish. Then along came Angel and I was hooked. I still wish I could be Buffy and kick butt like she can. 😀 lol
