What made you a Buffy fan?

This thread makes me feel old.

I watched the film when it was released on VHS, I liked it. That's why I watched the show.
 
I was always aware of Buffy, but I had somehow formed the impression that I wouldn't like it. I wish I'd given it a try when it was first aired because I know I would have loved it. I'm the same age as Buffy (yes, it makes me feel special), so it would have been fun to go through all of the years of school with her.

My college friends all watched it together and often invited me, but I always said, "No, it's to campy, it's too silly." I don't know what I was thinking.

The first Whedon show I watched was Firefly, which I loved. I also watched Dollhouse, which was pretty good. Finally, a year and a half ago, I was looking for a new show, so I decided to give another Whedon show a try. By the time the opening credits came up, I felt like I had found something that had been missing all of my life. Once I finished Buffy, I went on to Angel. And now I'm a diehard Whedonite.
 
I can't remember what made me a fan. I remember I used to watch it with my mum (she was in love with Angel LOL) and just got hooked.
 
I'm only seventeen, so I was like...4 or 5 when it started airing? Egads. So yup, never watched it live, lol! I watched the entire series earlier this year in just two months, and then all of ATS the following month. I started from the very beginning and watched every episode in order. I think I got the full emotional impact of the story that way- the full Buffy experience, if you will. I had a very, very difficult time avoiding spoilers, so I knew a few things (Spike/Buffy, Willow's sexuality, Anya becoming a Scooby, etc.) before they happened. It was still wonderful watching it evolve in the story though!

I was always aware of Buffy, but only when people made references about "vampire slaying" (saw that a lot more often when the Twilight craze came out, I wonder why! 😉), really. I think people were always aware of the superficial concept of Buffy- basically, Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking vampire butt. But I never heard anything about the complexity or amazing plot construction of the show itself. Sad to say, I was one of those people who never expected it from a show called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". *hangs head in elitist shame*

And so I fell in love with Buffy entirely on accident. I just wanted something funny to get into and pretty people to look at. It piqued my interest too because I was a fan of Alyson Hannigan from How I Met Your Mother. Never, ever expected that I'd become such a Buffy fanatic. 😉
 
I was young at the time so i'm not too sure what exactly attracted me. I think it comes down to how great the characters were, the spirit within the group, Sarah Michelle Gellar along with Britney Spears was someone i loved when i was little.

In my family Buffy was one of them shows along with Stargate and Angel that we watched every week, it became a routine and the sustained quality of the episodes meant me being a fan was never going to change.
 
I can't really remember, when or at what certain point I became a Buffy fan. It must have been by the end of 1997, when the first season premiered here in germany. I always loved vampires and stuff. So for me it was kind of taken for granted that I would begin to watch Buffy. Funnily enough I found the episodes really scary, which might have been the reason for me to keep on watching, because it never got boring. I fell in love with the charakters and that was it. Today, Buffy is still my favorite TV-show of all times... 😉
 
Well, I REALLY like bunnies, they're my favorite animal, so my friends showed the the song "I've Got A Theory" and I absolutely loved it! I listened to it until I could sing it verbatim. Then I got to listening to the other ones, and LOVED them, especially, "Under Your Spell" (I guess what REALLY motivated me to start watching was Willow and Tara, because somewhere inside me knew I liked girls LOL) So I wanted to see the show. Well, my friend had the first 2 seasons and let me borrow them, I wasn't obsessed yet, with the first season, I just watched when I was bored and had nothing to do (I lived in a group home at the time), once I got to season two, I was more interested, then I started to have with drawls, I NEEDED to see the third season. So I started renting the seasons from Hollywood video, and I couldn't go without watching it. So I got a summer job and bought the Chosen Collection. Yup, that's what happened. 😀

Man, I was 15, I dont remember exactly, I have no idea! haha. I remember really relating to Willow, because, minus the outfits, I was exactly like her... Had pretty much no friends, very very good with computers, shy.... never had a boyfriend, etc... I just loved growing up with them.... It made me happier then pretty much anything else, and it still does.
 
Sarah Michelle Gellar. Simple as that. I fell in love with her in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and decided to give Buffy a watch. Luckily, the first episodes I saw were Ted and Bad Eggs, so I was just in time for Surprise and Innocence, and couldn't stop watching after that.
 
I don't remember what drew me to the show, specifically. It feels like such a long time ago. It sucked me in from the first ep though, and I definitely wanted to keep watching.
 
Wow. It feels like such long time ago. I was eleven when I first saw some glimpses of the show but I remember my mum didn't want me watching it and forbade me.
Then a new girl started in my class when I was twelve and she invited me to her house a lot because I helped her with her English homework (I have always loved English, my favourite subject) and in the background she always had on a Buffy episode. I quickly recognized the show and I remember we watched "When she was bad" together. Then I fell in love with the show again and started watching it behind locked doors and when my mum wasn't home, lol.

I remember that I made my sister watch it too, poor thing, and we used to play Buffy together. She was Dawn and I was Buffy (duh, I was the older sister. I had the power to choose first) and I might have been a little pushy. 😀
We had a blue couch too that you could pull out to make it a bed and we used to fight there, one was Buffy and the other a vampire. That was really fun. XD

Then I sort of forgot about Buffy for many years and last summer a channel here in Sweden started showing all the episodes from the beginning. I caught it in the middle of the first season and followed it obsessivly. If someone disturbed me or if I didn't make it home in time for Buffy I freaked out. That show ruled my life that entire time. Then I was completly stuck agin and wished for the collection DVD's for christmas, and got it. So now I'm a real fan and I watch Buffy all of the time. I have one friend that is as obsessed as me and we have regularly Buffy nights in which we watch Buffy, talk about it, do Slayer excersises and swoon over all the hot people. Haha, I love her.

I started out loving Buffy and then I had a period under which I had the hots for Willow, real bad, but now my favourite person is Faith.

The show just has is all: danger, action, horror, laughs, tears, love... Just the feeling of being home every time I pop in a DVD. I want to live in the Buffyverse.

I'm also working on getting all the Angel DVD's. I only have season two right now.

So well... that's my story. 😀
 
It's pretty simple for me, there's so much crap out there that isn't about anything meaningful that when you find something like Buffy(or Firefly, Angel etc..) that is, you feel fortunate.

I think Joss and the people who work with him have a moral conscience and it comes through strongly in the work they do. In one of the extras on DVD Joss talks about making programs that people will love never like. That probably means he loses a lot of potential viewers as he's not playing for a common medium, but the result is special if you're willing to invest the time to enter his universe.

Serenity is my entry into the Whedonverse and it was exciting. I'm probably older than many fans, I saw the original Star Wars when it first played in theatres and I've seen how the art has changed over the years. I've watched a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, movies like Alien, Blade Runner(another great), E.T.(never really got it) and many more and Serenity was still a big thrill. After that exploring the rest of the world of Whedon has been a real joy, and I still have Dollhouse to discover and whatever Joss does in the future.

It's my theory that 300 years from now they'll be talking about Joss Whedon the same way we do about Shakespeare, "there's no way one man could create so much wonderful fantasy", well he did have a lot of help.

But it's not that simple of course....
I'm a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother and I also like the three real American Pie movies, but I think they came after Buffy...
Anyway, I watched How I Met Your Mother and every character was so cool, so I looked up what other roles they did play.
And Alyson played, of course, Willow in Buffy and I thought "You've heard of it, but never watched it..." So I checked it out.
But in Germany they didn't air it anymore. (No big deal, I wanted to watch it in English anyway)

Then I made the mistake to pick a random episode. I didn't get anything....:eek2:
But then I decided to watch it all from the beginning and suddenly season 1 was finished and I continued with season 2, then season 3, and so on.
But the things that made me keep watching were the sense of humor (especially Willow, Giles and Xander. They're awesome!), the horror and suspense (I really like horror movies and vampires and stuff and the vampires in BtVS are the hard and vicious ones, which I really like, not the weird twilight ones... sorry, twilight fans😱) and of course the story. It's like one giant movie!

But I have to say, if Alyson hadn't played Willow, I probably woundn't have kept watching it (well, besides the part where I'd never have checked it out without her.) and the same thing with Nick.
For example when I saw the pilot episode I was like "oh man, where's Willow?". I really had trouble finishing it😱

So all in all it's the extremely sympathic cast and the story line. Everything is perfect for me. (well, ok sometimes I'd like less of the romance, but that's a matter of taste.)

I got into How I met your mother just for Alyson
I saw the movie and then I heard the TV series was debuting. I checked it out and it was really cool. Lots of fighting and pretty girls.

I was like nine at the time. Give me a break.

Upon reflection, the Buffy movie was a pile of crap and the TV series is good for its relationships, well-developed characters and....the pretty girls fighting.

I watched BTVS off and on when it aired in TV and liked it (loved SMG and DB!) but never really got "hooked" (I was in jr. high/high school and never watched any tv shows regularly). Then about a year ago there was a Buffy and Angel marathon on TV during Thanksgiving week and I started watching them and became hooked. I decided to watch all 7 seasons of BTVS and then went on to watch Angel and I have come to love both series. I really enjoy the humor and writing in both shows and find more of the characters enjoyable to watch.

A month or so ago I was looking at BTVS pictures online and came across this board and it has only fueled my Buffy/Angel obsession! 🙂
 
I liked the first season, and watched it with my mum. Then the second season came out and went in a darker direction and I was bit to young to really LOVE it, but I still enjoyed it. Then I caught a repeat of Season 2 and 3 on foxtel (weekend long marathon) while I was at my grandparents and I didn't want to come home, I watched the entire thing and then rented all the videos.

Then I became obsessed. I would tape all the episodes so I could rewatch them and started buying all the books I could find.

I loved Buffy because it came at the exact right time for me, I was a pre-teen to young teenager and was trying to figure out what kind of woman I wanted to be. Buffy was perfect. She was beautiful, strong, funny and had handsome boys around her. She became my role model and I dressed like her, and jumped around the house when no one was home pretending to kill vampires.

As I grew up, and the show grew up I fell even more in love. I was about 16 when I saw Chosen and I felt that it echoed my life, I could relate to all the characters in different ways and just adored the stories, the characters and the monster aspect to it.
