What made you a Buffy fan?

Yerr same with me. I randomly fell in love with it after i watched it.
duhh 😛

I saw the first episode when it first aired but I was only 7-8 and the vampires scared me so I didn't watch it anymore. And then when I was 14, I hade just come out of a pretty serious Smallville-addiction, I don't know what i was thinking back then.
So started watching Buffy because I liked the name Buffy The Vampire slayer and I remembered how it had scared my when I was younger, and it was season 3 during Willow and Xander's little affair and I wanted to know what happened cus' I emediatly liked Woz, so on that way it was. Oh and then in the beginning of the fourth season when they introduced Riley I was actually worried that they were gonna pair him up with Willow! 🙂 stupid.. But I wasn't like totally hooked on it yet..
And then I saw Hush, and Tara and Willow together, their relationship got me a little bit obsessed with the show...but in a healthy way..

Why I love Buffy!

I started watching Buffy after my boyfriend already had all of the seasons and wanted to share some of his favorite episodes with me (nightmares, lie to me, band candy, etc.) Obviously I became hooked. I've since watched every episode (at least) three times, and am currently finishing watching all of the angel seasons for the second time now, while also keeping up with the Buffy season 8 comics.
I'm also in love with Firefly and Serenity...and Dollhouse...and Dr. Horrible's sing along blog. Basically anything Joss is incredible in my book. I'm excited for all of his future work. =]

I just started watching Buffy a couple months ago (mid October) and I was attracted by how good the show is, the expansive universe, and dedicated fanbase. The show was on TV when I was like 7 or 8, but I was never interested in it back then

I became a fan of Buffy the very first time I watched "Welcome to the Hellmouth" for the first time.

What is so appealing about the show? Everything. It's perfect. It's got everything; wit, humor, adventure, fantasty, romance, and horror.

I don't know why I love Buffy so much more than other shows, honestly. Nothing compares. I've given up on figuring it out, lol. I just bask in the awesomess that is Buffy and let it be.

I caught Buffy on Sky1 in 1997 (if memory serves) during season 1. The first episode I saw was Invisible Girl. Now retrospectively i'm not season 1's biggest but the writing and the dialogue got nine year old me hooked. I loved how the characters spoke. The little whedonisms. It was like nothing I'd ever heard or have subsequently on TV. It felt so real and i was hooked.

By the time season 2 came around ten year old me was going through some of the darkest times of my life. And the escapism of Buffy really helped me keep my head up and assured me I was not alone. When Giles looked at a teary eyed Buffy in Innocence and said

... If it's guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm not your man. All you will get from me is my support. And my respect...

I imagined if I had a father...thats what he'd say to me. And it gave me enormous strength. As Giles became Buffy's surrogate father so in a way he became mine and gave me an altogether more positive view of men. Meeting Tony at Hallowhedon felt like a reunion and I completely understood when the two sisters in front of me broke down in front of him explaining how Buffy had helped them out of some dark times. Which Tony met with a loving embrace. My surrogate did not disappoint.

Buffy helped me see beyond my shit life at the time and believe that there were in fact creative, intelligent, kind and loving people out there like in Buffy. I had just yet to meet them, but I would and I'm thankful to say, I have.

Buffy was my life. My walls were covered in posters, I would religiously watch episodes (on tape, oh yeah) and obsess constantly. Throughout the chaos that was my childhood. Buffy was the one stability.

The way music takes other people back to a point in their lives. That's how I am with Buffy. People have albums they consider to be the soundtrack to certain periods of their lives. Well Buffy is the soundtrack to my life (more specifically my adolescence) and it taught me so much about myself and I'm forever thankful to Joss for that...

Wow. This was beautiful to read. I'm so glad Buffy helped you through a crappy childhood. I've only recently discovered Buffy but I can only imagine how much better my chilhood would have been if I had seen it earlier.

Very similar to my own story. Good for you for sharing :)
The first time I watched BtVS was back when it first aired in 1997 and I watched it in french. I think I saw most of the first three seasons with my family. Nobody liked it(including me), so we stopped. It took me probably close to 8-9 years to get into it again. I think I saw one ep of season 4, and I decided I'd just start back from the beginning(and this time in english). So I started and what got me hooked that time around were the characters! I don't know if it was just a question of age back in 1997, but I just didn't look at them the same way anymore. I actually loved the interactions and I watched the first three season and loved them(how awesome is it to watch a great show for the first time?!).

Where I really got hooked to the universe for good though, was in season five. That's why that season was my fav for a very long time. It had a bunch of everything... action, romance, drama, suspense, comedy, ect... It's the season where I seriously started loving Buffy's character. The same for Giles(even though I already liked him quite a lot in the first few seasons) and Spike(he's awesome in s5). I still remember Fool For Love being a very gripping episode for me. The ending, which was totally Spuffy, was heart-breaking the first time through(not that it wasn't afterward).

So yea, that's pretty much how I got to be such a big fan of this show.

I'm glad you have it now though! XXX

Thank you! Me too!!!!
My story of how I got into it is abit strange lol..

My mates were talking about it, by this time season 7 had just started and tbh I'd hadn't even heard of it by this time! aha. Anyways we were in Gym I was 13 years old and my mates were bantering about it and me being the 13 year old boy who hate's girls at this young age ( remeber the days ewwww the opposite sex!) says "Pfft, Buffy! that's for girls! It's got a girl hero, that's not right it can't be cool!".

After that I got home and my sister was watching "Beneath you" I sat down and just watched it out of curiosity, telling myself I hate it, it's crap, don't wanna be watching this..But saying these things in my head I still found that I was sitting there watching it still! I couldn't lie to my self...I liked it.

A week later or so we were in the video shop and I coudln't think of anything to rent..So I came across Buffy and started to rent it out...slowly from season 1 to season 7! The obsession slowly growing on me day by day! and now...I'm a Buffy freak!

That's interesting Benneath You was your first episode
I'm older than a lot of you on this thread, so for me I wasn't interesting when it was airing because I had no interest in a show about a teenage cheerleader LOL! Also I was involved in religion similar to BananaBuffy's at that time, or rather I was just starting to come out of that and start watching TV again. So, when my 1st son was born (2001), FX was airing Buffy in syndication, and I spent a lot of our morning feedings watching it. I had developed postpartum depression when he was a baby, and it was really inspiring for me to watch this girl kick evil undead ass. Made me feel that maybe I could protect my son against this cruel world. I have really good memories of those quiet morning times with my [first] baby. I caught some of the final season, and my husband was also interested in Angel. I couldn't get into Angel then, because I didn't understand what was going on or who some of these characters were.

I kind of forgot about it for awhile, until they started airing on LOGO this past winter. I started recording them on the DVR, but I got annoyed that they aired them out of order & the same eps repeatedly. So I started watching them instantly via Netflix on the Blu Ray player. I also watched Angel for the first time. I started a new rewatch in August when I found you guys! I love having a place to share my obsession LOL. I have watched 1/2 of Firefly & intend to complete it, as well as watch Dollhouse & Dr. Horrible.

I honestly don't remember. My only memories of when I started watching Buffy were when it used to air on BBC2 after (or was it instead of?) The Simpsons. It was heavily edited, but I never noticed. I just slowly got hooked. In the end, I was far more interested in catching Buffy than the show that I'd been there to watch in the first place! I think I only ever watched the second half of S6 and S7 as it aired though, on Sky.

Oh, I completely forgot to mention that getting back into Buffy has got me back in touch with my inner geek LOL. I am the daughter of a Trekkie & grew up watching sci-fi TV & movies, & reading sci-fi & fantasy & comic books. Now I'm introducing my boys to all that stuff my dad loved. He died 4 years ago, and my mother has not got rid of his many shelves of books. I hope to start reading quite a few of them.

Last summer, my flatmate introduced me to Buffy and I absolutely loved it! Can't believe that i didn't watch it when it was on. All the characters mean so much to me now in such a short space of time. It's just so much better than any of the shows I watched at the time(even though I stubbornly claimed before watching it that I would still prefer Dawson's Creek!) because the characters have so much more depth to them.

Oh please don't tell me you actually still prefer Dawson's Creek over Buffy? 😱
Not that there is anything wrong with that show, you know, aside from the obvious...

I'm just kidding 😀

I was initially hesitant to watch the show because I had the misconception that it was a teen angst type of show. However, I had so many people who opinion's I trust tell me I should watch the show so I did.

There were three episodes that turned me from slightly interested in this show to a full on hardcore fan. It was 'Prophecy Girl', 'Innocence' and then 'Becoming part 2'. After that I stopped watching via Netflix every couple of weeks and instead went out to buy the full series on DVD so I could watch it without delay over and over.

I keep coming back to it because of the sense of family that's created in the show. I truly feel like I'm right there with the Scoobies when I watch and feel every up and down that they do. That's very rare for me and I'm someone who watches A LOT of genre TV shows.

I remember being round my cousin's house when I was little (about 8 I guess) and I saw the Buffy box-sets and was curious to watch them because I loved dark shows/films. Of course my aunty said no because it was too grown up for me but obviously this made me even more intrigued. Anyway, I was flicking through the TV channels a short while later and Buffy was on so I watched it (Double meat palace was the episode) and I was instantly hooked! Being young and impressionable, seeing a girl kick ass was just so inspiring. I loved the darkness of it and the humour. I remember begging my parents to let me stay up to watch the first airing of S7 on sky. I just grew up watching this show and I was utterly obsessed for years. My walls were covered in posters and I forever drew pictures of the characters from my Buffy magazines. I got as much merchandise and Buffy related things I could possibly get my hands on.

Then I grew up and forgot about it but last year I started watching season 1 and I was instantly hooked again. And well, utterly obsessed again.

In the summer before I started Grad School, I picked up a copy of Buffy Season 1 on DVD for $15 at FYE. A friend told me if I didn't like, he'd buy it off me - so, no loss for me. I sat down and began watching Buffy on my lunch breaks between classes...was hooked immediately. Watched Season 1 over and over before picking up Season 2. Have since gotten myself engrossed in all things Joss Whedon, (Angel, Firefly, and just started Dollhouse).

Side note - got my little sister hooked on Buffy too when she was 13, a great accomplishment.

I loved it from the first episode I saw which just happened to be New Moon Rising. The show was different. I was young, 12, I think, but I didn't feel like the show was too old for me, and I didn't feel like I was being talked down to either. It went through a lot of things I was going through, and has helped me cope with life, actually.

Plus it gave me a really witty, sarcastic sense of humor.

I think I loved it so much because I identified with Willow and Tara a lot. I used to be a lot like Tara. I stuttered and everything. I was painfully shy, unless I was around my friends. Now, I am nothing like season 4 Tara. More like season 6 Tara, but with a little Willow humor thrown in... I think that's why I love that couple so much... Anywho. That and I can attribute that to pretty much one person.

Buffy had a lot of situations I identified with growing up, and it was nice to know I wasn't the only one going through certain things.
