There were a lot of them...

To me it'll always be Buffy and Willow getting the news over the phone that Ms. Calendar has been killed...Willow's crying gets me every time.

That was really hard to watch w/o tearing up
Buffy killing Angel. Jenny's death broke me, but the Angel/Buffy scenes was slower, more painful than the phonecall.

Buffy crying on her bed because Angel turned into a ******* was hard to see too, the audience knowing that he was a monster, but Buffy believing/fearing that the man she loved has just wanted sex.

Well, she didn't actually kill him..she sent him to hell.
The music, the flowers and candles up the stairs, Jenny's dead eyes. Just such a shame for Giles.

I disagree; as an audience you were prepaired for that, you knew she was dead and knew what was coming. Now if the actual killing of her was done as a flashback after that event I could see where it would be heartbreaking, but we knew that she was dead.

I still say it was the line 'close your eyes' as she ran him through with the sword.

'Close your eyes' is pretty gut wrenching. Also when the music in the final two scenes are pretty heartbreaking, both 'Close Your Eyes' and 'Full of Grace'. The last shot of her on the bus leaving Sunnydale combined with the lines 'I know I can love you much better than this, it's better this way' results in Kean in a pool of sorrow in the livingroom🙁

We all knew it was coming, yes. We all also knew that Buffy would sacrifice her one true love to save the world. But for Giles' potential happiness to be closed down like that underlines the tenet that 'the mission's what matters' and that as a Watcher, he must abide by it. It's his resilience and dedication. It's that's what gives Buffy guidance and the strength to run Angel through. That's why it's heartbreaking. It's such a waste.

I didn't; I honestly did not see it coming, I never thought it would get that far. I just expected the prototypical 'happy ending' that is why that scene weighed more than others.

Ah, so the ramifications were more disheartening than the scene itself? I can agree with that.

I agree. I would choose this scene as well overall.

Yeah, the Angel scene was sad, but I'm not so much of a Bangel person. I just view the whole thing as overly melodramatic and somewhat forced for dramatic effect. (It wasn't even nessesary to stab him and send him to hell. If it was just his blood that closed the portal...think about it.)

Runners up:

The scene in Lie to Me where Giles goes to get revenge on Ms. Calenders death, and Buffy punches him in the face and says "Don't leave me, I need you." then they hug? Get's me everytime. I always tear up. A very beautiful Buffy/Giles moment.

In Innocene, after Buffy wakes up and realizes Angel is different and she tells him she loves him, and he says "Love you too babe." or whatever. She looks so sad...Poor Buffy.

I LOVE when Buffy punches him and says that, ahhh
Yeah, the whole end of Becoming, Part 2.
Starting with 'Close your eyes' and then Buffy watching her friends from a distance and walks away...

Also feel really sorry for Buffy when she finally meets Angel(us) after their night together.
You got a lot to learn about men, kiddo. Although I guess you proved that last night.
That is so cruel... poor, poor Buffy

I cry everytime :(
"Close Your Eyes" and "Full of Grace." Those two bits'll have me in tears. Every single time. I still cry every time I hear "Full of Grace." 😛 There is just.. so much emotion and heartbreak there. I also was not expecting her to actually kill Angel. I was expecting it to work out that either Willow saved the day in time, or she killed Angelus. But not what happened.

Yep Im another one for "Close your eyes", it so sad 🙁
The music has alot to do with it I think, I hear it and get all weepy, same with the music from The Gift. If I'm watching it on DVD I get so drawn in, there arnt many TV shows or books that do that for me, perhaps that's why I find that part so sad above the rest because Im so engrossed by it.

Oh, I disagree entirely. Jenny's death was horrible. But the real tragedy was in the viewer's knowing that she's already dead. It was Giles' building hope, then gut-wrenching realisation that made it so heartbreaking. If we hadn't known, it would have been merely shocking - like, say, The Body (or, rather, the end of I Was Made to Love You). That doesn't make me sad. It's the character reactions that do it.

The phone call is also horrible for just these reasons.

To me, the most stomach twisting moment in season two would have to be Jenny's death. I think it was the fact that it wasn't from sucking blood, or any other various vampire killing techniques; it was a human styled kill. He had the power to do what he wished, and he didn't. He didn't get a meal out of it, or even at the least torture her. He had the audacity to snap her neck; such a brutal, inhumane way to kill someone. Plus, the fact that Jenny was a generally liked character by the Buffy audience, it makes it that much more of an impact. Notice how we don't sympathize when demons die similarly?

And the way Giles is just so empty afterwards -- and then Drusilla's illusion, which is almost more heartbreaking for me than the Buffy/Angel moments -- how very hungry Giles is to believe that she is real, that she is there, that he can be happy. (The camera work on that bit gets me really badly, too. Oh Joss.)

Another episode that really makes me ache in a quiet sort of way -- "I Only Have Eyes For You". Buffy struggling with forgiveness, the poignancy of that speech being interpreted and re-interpreted by each person who delivers it.

(Also, until I started watching Buffy, I had no idea what levels of being-a-sap lay as yet untapped within myself. I do not get weepy very easily -- but Joss Whedon can wreck me like no other person. I sniffle unashamedly every time I hear "Full of Grace". I make embarrassing squeaky noises. I brooded after "Innocence", and after yellow crayon and I watched "Becoming, Part II" for the first time, we stumbled downstairs, with blank, stunned looks on our faces, and when people asked us what on earth had happened, we could only look at each other and wail. "SHE-- ANGELLLLL!" Oh, it's terrible, it is. What hath Joss wrought?)

Tear-stained faces, I might add. And, ah, yeah "I Only Have Eyes For You" is good too... in the sad way...
When Spike died, I couldn't speak for like, three hours. I was so sad and shocked. I know how you feel. 🙂 And I almost choked to death when she told him she "loved" him...(I distinctly remember I was eating cereal). I was like, "WHAT!!!! SHE SAID WHAT!!!???" and then..."He said WHAT!!"
I didn't believe her then and I don't beleive her now 🙂

um, that's not really season 2
For me, it's a tie.

- Buffy crying on her bed, holding the ring Angel gave her. That scene gets me every time. You can literally feel her pain radiating out of the TV..even if none of us have dated a vampire that went rogue, we can, in that moment, know how it would feel...her boyfriend was essentially dead, but the evil thing wearing his face was still around to torment her. And she was still surrounded by the keepsakes and the memories of him. Heartbreaking moment.

- Buffy stabbing Angel. I think we all knew it was coming, but perhaps not in the way it did. We knew, if it came down to it, she'd kill Angel....but not while he was GOOD again. This scene is, in my opinion, the saddest of all BtVS scenes, and part of what first announced, "Hey, this show is more than a show, it's powerful."
