what's your opinion on cursing?

I've seen such a broad range of tolerance or intolerance to cursing. I've had teachers in college who have said, "this business is a mind (beep)." and even worse things, but I've also had teachers who would kick out of of class if you cursed. None of my family cares if I curse or not, but I have a born again Christian aunt who thinks I'm going to Hell if I do.

Personally, it's just grown to become part of my language. I am from Jersey, ya know! lol I'm a film maker who specializes in horror films, so obviously there is swearing involved. I'm also a comedian and all my acts are usually raunchy/offensive. I even rap occassionally. I'm not a doormat, so if you try to walk all over me, you will hear words that you don't like. The only difference between me is some people is I know when to turn it off. In certain atmospheres it's just not appropriate to talk like that. If I'm with customers at school, talking with a teacher, in some public places, I'll talk like a professional human-being. But in other situations when I can be me to the fullest I'm just one giant (beeeeeeeep).

So, what's your opinion on swearing? Is it that big a deal to you? Do you do it often? Do you get offended when someone curses around you? Shhhhaaarre.

If I'm with friends then whatever goes.

If I'm at work then it's entirely innappropriate in whatever form (but mainly because I work with SED kids).

If I'm around the fam it's 50:50, I would never swear AT my parents but I'd swear in front of them (i.e. I would say "I hate this effing snow" but not "eff off" to them).

:]

i agree completely
I don't really swear out of choice as I like them to have impact when I'm really angry instead. By that I don't count words like bloody et al, I usually mean the 4 letter ones.

I have absolutely no issue with swearing. Especially with the lower lever of swear words (shit, crap, bitch), and especially when it's not used to describe a person, but as description of something. "This weather is a right bitch" is fine.

Of course at work I have a no swear policy cause I'm working in sales, and you can just never tell what someone is going to get offended by. Just yesterday someone complained because another agent said 'cool bananas' and thought that it was really inappropriate. The girl that said it wasn't even talking to a client - she was on the phone to her friend! Sheesh, some people.

The higher end of swear words ('c' words and 'f' words mostly), I love to say, it adds to an argument, and sometimes has that little bit more grunt then other words, but I try to be careful where I use them. It's mostly confined to hanging out with my close friends, or when I'm at home...

Although once at my last job when I almost got knocked out I did manage to say both of those words incredibly loudly...

Noooooo, but seriously, me being from New York City, I'm pretty used to being surrounded by the Trucker's Lingo, and the use of same. But I don't believe in it's use 100% of the time. There's a time and place for that sort of thing.

Your avatar- coolest ever!!
I curse A LOT. It got REALLY bad a while back to the point where I would think I said "'morning, what's up guys" and I really said "Hell of a morning, what the f*** is up guys?" Like I would really not realize that I had cursed. After that was pointed out to me by a teacher, I decided to change. I will never cut cursing out of my language... it's just how I speak. I despise it when people ask me to censor myself. In my opinion, they're just words. They don't mean anything... good or bad. They're just words. I use the often for emphasis... almost like I use the word "really."

I did this thing on Facebook recently that analysed your statuses to see how much you curse. I, apparently, curse more than 90% of all FB users.

So, make of that what you will. 😉

oh yea! i did that a while ago too!
Around friends I curse a lot, have done since high school so it's sorta just something that's grown to be accepted between us all. I try not to curse in work because I think it's unprofessional but I have cursed at times when I annoyed with staff or burn myself on the ovens/pans. I have never cursed in front of my family until a few months back, we moved house and I didn't have wireless internet so I had to move my gaming rig downstairs into pretty much the same room where my family usually spend most their time. I get stupidly stupidly competative and it doesn't help that I'm gaming with the my friends 90 percent of the time and instead of simply relaying a statment of something like 'There are two of them in the bunker' it'd be more like 'There's *curse* two of the *curse* in the *curse* bunker'

But thats the only time I curse in front of family members i think stuff like that is highly disrespectful, like my family know I smoke and drink quite a lot but i refuse to smoke or get very drunk in front of them.

Interestingly though, I have my sister, mother, father and other relatives on Facebook and I swear and update a lot of things I wouldn't dare say to them in person.

I do cuss a lot and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. They're just words.

I don't cuss around family though - it's just a thing.

Exactly. They're just words.
I've been meaning to watch my use of swear words but the truth is, I curse quite a lot. The sociolinguist in me says that it's just a pressure/stress relief mechanism that is natural to human beings and the greater the taboo the better, but I do draw a line. I'm pretty much like BDH as in that I would swear in front of my parents but never at them, not even lightly. I never really did either, not even as a teenager - I remember being incredibly shocked at myself when I called my mum a stupid cow one time when I was 15 or 16, and I immediately apologised.

I also try not to use swear words that are misogynist or offensive to minorities. The c word horrifies me and even more so does its German equivalent due to its etymology (it comes from putridity), and I would never, ever use the word "gay" to describe something douchy.

I do use the f word a lot though, even when I speak German. In English I tend to use "feck", which I got from my Irish friends and which is not as offensive (I think, because it's used a lot more freely than the "standard" version and I've heard a lot of older middle-class people use it. In fact I think it's probably used more for emphasis than for swearing. Any Irish people here who could clarify that?)

An Aussie friend of mine once told me that to him, German is the only language in which curses really sound like curses. He said that it's hard to take people seriously in their anger when they say things like "merde" and "f***" or even "s***" sounds relatively weak compared to a German person going "SCHEISSE!". That made me laugh. Obviously I can't comment because I can't really hear German from a non-native perspective, but what do you guys think?

"feck" is a completely non offensive word.

you mean you use the English F-word or the German one? going around randomly cursing with the German one would be preeeeeetty strong (and rather strange) indeed. :D

Correct.

Feck is like the curse word you can say in front of your Nana. It's like the softer side of cursing. lol

Feckin right it is!
I make a concerted effort not to use the language that I learned in the Navy around my family, and I think that I do a better than average job of it. When I'm alone, however, I often find myself slipping back into nautical language, especially when having to deal with idiot drivers on the highway.

I don't think I'm awfully heavy on cursing, but neither do I avoid it. My most often used cuss word would be the German version of "piggy f***er"... there's a small number of people who, whenever I think of them, I will call that. (My therapist from a few years back? Yep, he's a PF if there ever was one. :fuming: ) Not to their face though, just muttering cussingly to myself. Yeah, I'm weird. :cyclop:

Further proof in point for my weirdness - insults I will call people to their faces include terms translating as "nose guy", "seal's biscuit", and "planetary dwarf". 😀

I am German and I have trouble translating backwards ;)

I meant I use the English f word 😉 I agree, randomly shouting "F***en" would make arguing the point that I'm not a weirdo pretty hard, if not impossible. Come to think of it, I never actually use that word in *any* context. Huh.

I admit that except for the first one - "Nasenmann" is not too odd, is it? - my cuss words are very odd indeed. ;)
I Don't Really Cuss, It feels Weird When I Do Though lol My Family Cusses Alot.

The Only Time I Go Off (cussing) Is If You Make Me Really Mad, or When I'm Driving.

Personally, I have no issue with it. At the end of the day, they are just words. Sure, I don't curse around children, but I see no issue doing it around people who are adults and mature enough to understand the word. When I worked, I never did it there, either; I just couldn't see people being okay with "Hey, @$!#in welcome to @#@$# Wendy's, can I take your @##$! order?!" It just didn't seem right to me. Plus, I would have gotten fired, lol, and that is the last thing I wanted to do.

I've heard people say that those who swear too much sound uneducated and moronic. To those people, I believe Sir Stephen Fry can explain my feelings best:

Also, I'd like the point out that mythbusters episode which proved, cursing when you're in pain DOES actually help with the pain because of psychological reason.

Yeah... Mythbusters did an experiment where they had people put their hand in ice water and hold it there until it hurt too bad... the first time they yelled "neutral" words like "cat" and "dog." The second time they yelled curse words. I think it was all but one person was able to hold their hand in the water longer when yelling curse words.
