When You Kiss Me, I Want to Die

"When you kiss me, I want to die," has always been one of my favorite quotes from the show, esp in the area of Bangel. I think it's said in Ep 5, Reptile Boy. It's such a... hardcore line, I guess, but it occurred to me the other day that I have no idea what it means. Does anyone have any insights?
 
How weird, we were talking about this is another thread. I commented on Eleftheria's sig and how she had interpreted it as a positive thing where as I had always seen it as negative/spiteful.

I'll put a link up to thread so everyone that's commented doesn't need to repeat themselves, but it'll be interesting to see what others think 🙂

I always had mixed feelings about this line. Generally because of the way Sarah [Michelle Gellar, obviously 😉] delivers it. I thought Buffy would have said it in a way meaning she was so in love with him, she could die; but the way she says it is as though she's digusted. I don't think it's really clear what it means, maybe it's just me who thinks that, though.

No I agree. Given what happens in that scene and the fact they are arguing, and Angel is being all 'sensible' and 'realistic' I think Buffy just says it to upset him because she's sick of having it rubbed in her face that they can't be together etc.

I've always loved that quote. I've always wondered myself how did she thought that? Why does she wanna die? And then I came to the conclusion - she was really mad and she said the because it was good come back, or it wad in a good way - like his kiss is do powerful and good to her, so she feels like she is in a better place, like Heaven 🙂 I mean I belive she thought that, but in the end, I love that quote 🙂

well it is actually very weird that i always gave that quote a good interpretation...i now understand that she was very angry and she might have said it to hurt Angel...but my opinion on the matter is that she is deeply in love with him...and he loves her as well,but he tries to make her see that this is serious.It's not a high school flirt,it is real love,and it exists between a vampire(with a soul nevertheless) and a vampire slayer.It is ironic,poetic,wonderful,real...and mostly it is serious!Angel tries to make her see that but Buffy also has her point.Everyone is putting so much pressure on her and now even Angel wants to be so serious...
Anyway i always thought she said that cause she loves him so much that she might be afraid how this will turn out to be...and how others will see this love.She loses herself in their kiss and she feels like she is in Heaven(like PrincessB said)

I like your point about Angel trying to point out how serious their love is, nice point :)
Considering Buffy's age when she said it, the fact that Angel was almost certainly her first serious love, and the inner conflict that she almost certainly had with the fact that Angel was a member of the very species that she was born to destroy, soul or no soul, added to the fact that her friends would almost certainly disapprove of such a relationship, I think that it's a pretty accurate, if overly dramatic, statement from her feelings at that particular moment. (Or maybe it was just a comment about Angel's blood breath) As happy as being with him made her feel, there was still that slight sense of shame and almost betrayal to the "Code Of The Slayer" as she saw it at that time.

The first time that Sarah and David were supposed to kiss on screen, they got up a sort of gross out bet. They both ate and drank all sorts of foul smelling things, like sardines and their oil, rank smelling cheese, and the like to see who would gag first from the other's awful breath. It speaks well of both of their acting skills that they were able to get through the scene and portray the romance appropriate for such a moment.

I do like this take on it but I don't think I agree with it. I think by this point Buffy was long past, as were her friends (maybe not Xander but that's for his own personal reasons) seeing the fact Angel was a vampire as a problem.

I do genuinely believe it stems from the fact she is angry that Angel is 'rubbing her nose' in the fact they can't be together but still showing up, making her coming to terms with that fact extremely difficult.

hahahahahahahah!!!did they really do that!?you mean in "Angel" when they share their first kiss(which turns from sweet to passionate) they both have terrible breaths???hahahaha!!!LMAO!:lmao:

I was watching the interview with Joss about the episode Angel and they *totally* did the whole gag-breath thing. That takes talent!

Anywayz, I think I've come to the conclusion that the line was said out of anger. Buffy was trying to hurt him, to tell him how much she wanted to get away from this whole confusing mess. Hyperbole, but effective.
 
their first kiss was very,very good!!!:happy30: in fact i can tell it is more passionate than many others they had on screen!!!so...if they both had the killing breath i guess they are really talented!!!

I know...weird, right? We were just discussing this very quote in the Bangel Love thread...

I agree with your interpretation, Flannen. She's definitely being spiteful and a little immature, in my opinion. This especially makes sense in the context of the conversation they're having in this episode.
 
I think she just said it to hurt him. They were arguing, so she said something that she thought he might respond badly too. I mean, it's not generally a compliment, hearing that you make people suicidal.

But it could just be a slip of the tounge, she said the first thing she could think of. Maybe she meant "When you kiss me I'm happy enough to die" or "I love you so much that it hurts, so dying would be a relief".
 
I always thought it was meant to be ambiguous...both for Angel and for the viewers. I saw it as Buffy herself not completely understanding everything she was feeling at that time. I don't think she was meaning it to be spiteful or hurtful, just honest. I also don't think she literally meant she wished for death, but rather she felt so consumed by the reasons they should or shouldn't be together that she just didn't know how to handle it.

I saw it as just....poetic.

I always thought it meant that Buffy loved Angel so much that when he kissed her, she wanted to die, so they could be together forever. I guess.
