Which character is the most tragic?

I'm finishing Season 5, so I might be biased, but I think it's Wesley simply because he loses all desire to continue after Fred dies. He may have eventually healed in time but he seems to completely lose who he is as a person in his grief.

Darla would be a close second, because she seemed to have so little love in her human life and it feels like she never really had a chance.

Stay away from the BB until you finish Angel!!! Please!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing from your post that you haven't finished it. If you have, ignore this post. But if you haven't, you don't want the ending spoiled. The last episode of Angel is one of my favorites in the entire Buffyverse.

LOL. I finished Angel back in '04. I'm just doing a rewatch.
Angel. There are a lot of characters that I really sympathize with at times, but I think Angel's story is the most tragic. He lost so many of his loved ones and the worst part is that he couldn't save them. He's this hero tasked with saving the world, and yet. Ah. it's so sad to me.

lol!!!! Glad you've finished it!!! My answer is Wesley. And his last scene in Not Fade Away always brings tears. But if he didn't die (and I haven't read the comics), then I think he would have died from a broken heart.

Angel seems like the obvious choice but I'm also gonna weigh in with a vote for Wesley. Or Anya.

Wes never had it easy - his relationship to his father is incredibly sad, he was never the golden boy of the Watcher's council (I wonder if he ever really wanted to be a watcher or if he simply didn't give much thought out of sheer desperate will to please his father...), he's a bit of a joke to start and then, well come Ats.... let's just say he's not exactly given any breaks (we all know his story too well for repetition 🙂) and as seen after 'Billy' he doesn't exactly go easy on himself for whatever mistakes he makes.
And just when things start to look up for him in season 5... well again tragedy strikes!

And Anya... while Aud might not have had the worst of lives until being cheated on I would have to say that the pain she experienced in order to get so vengeful and attract D'hoffryn's attention must've been something. 1000+years as an evil demon only to then end up human and experience all the pain of love and heartbreak again... and to again (clearly not having learned from past acts) return to being a demon (must've seemed like the simple choice and turned out to be just the opposite...) I don't know. There's something distinctly tragic about her story too.
 
Angel for me. The idea of a villain suddenly getting his soul back and having to feel the guilt of all the evil he's done is an incredibly dark thing. Then, Angel spends basically the rest of his life trying to find redemption...and he never does. Plus, he is forced to leave the only woman he's ever loved even though both of them still loved each other...so sad 🙁

Wesley, hands down. Not sure what else I can add about him that hasn't been brought up in previous posts. He loses his love, and is forced to look at her shell every day until the end. That must be painful.

Not sure if I would say Angel. I mean yes his "true love" with Buffy can never be again due to the fact that he will lose his soul, BUT he does seem to be getting happier with Nina, so he ends on a pretty good note (I haven't read the comics, so that may have changed). Plus, he had to give up his son.

Anya. The entire reason she became a vengeance demon was tragic, her on her wedding day was tragic and then the way she finally understand what being a human is all about she dies. It's sad really.

Tough one I think they all have their issues but for males maybe Spike, Angel or Wesley maybe even Doyle.
I think Spike and Angel for kind of the same reasons them both having souls now. They both are trying to redeem themselves and they never really get chances romantically speaking. Spike and Buffy, Cordy and Angel so it is sad really. I think they will be alone or with each other not romantically.

Wesley because like people said after Fred he certainly did loose himself. He also lost the former Wesley when he was alienated from the group. After that he got a lot of development but he was never as carefree or at least didn't seem that way.

Now for females I would have to say either Cordy or Fred.
I say Cordy because of what happened to her in season four she truly turned into a beautiful person with a lot of heart. Then you know how it goes.

Now Fred sticks out because first off the girl was in a hell dimension for five years then she comes back and she later doesn't make it. That is very sad to me and tragic really. She also like Cordy was developing/already a beautiful person and it was all just taken away and it was kind of sadder for her for the fact that she had to work to get it back.
 
Angel - Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.

From his days as Liam, desperately trying to be worthy of his father's love and approval, right up to now, where he desperately tries to make amends, Angel's life has been marked by tragedy after tragedy. Imagine having a curse that actually forbids you from being happy. Or reliving every horrific and grotesque crime you committed without your soul? Or God, having a child and him being kidnapped and knowing he was taken to a Hell dimension. And all of that is before you get to having to leave the person you love, or watching your friends die one by one.

And the real tragic part is that these are just some of Angel's misfortunes and worse still, that there will surely be more to follow. 🙁

Yep, Angel's a tragedy just waiting to happen. Usually to someone else, but it's always for the greater good. Just ask Angel.
I think Ben was the most tragic. Everyone else made choices or decisions, he had neither. In fact, he would fit the classic tragic hero moniker pretty well.

Personally, I never felt as bad for a character as when Wesley tried to help Angel and Connor and the whole thing turned upside down and he ended up being a betrayer to his friends, with Angel trying to kill him when he was helpless... You add to that everything that happened in season four and five, with Lilah dying and Wes having to cut her head, him killing his dad and finally having Fred die in his arm just to then have an entity take over her body... Oh and he dies pretty much alone, if you consider Illyria was just lying to him...

Yea, he'd have to be my pick. Obviously Angel would be a good choice too.

I don't feel bad for Spike. He chose it and he saw what he would go through before-hand with Angel.
 
I'm going with Wesley. The whole Connor arc must have really sucked.
 
Someone mentioned Ben and I hadn't thought about it like that. So yeah, Ben.

But I'm mostly thinking Tara. Shows up, abused for 18-19 years by family? Lost her mom, found love but had to worry the entire relationship she A.) Wasn't what Willow really wanted B.) Would be left behind. Family shows back up, thought she was a demon the entire time. Found out she wasn't a demon. Gets brain sucked, gets mind raped and then raped by her girlfriend, then dies.
 
Wesley for me... He came into the show as an outsider, and he was never accepted and treated with respect on BtVS, then on "Angel" when we got his back story to find out what kind of family life he had, it was easy to see why he craved acceptance and love and friendship so much. Once he got it, I rooted for him and Fred; that he might have a romantic relationship was something with someone that seemed made for him seemed like something he deserved on such a deep level. And then the way it all turned out? It was pure tragedy.
 
Jesse. Poor guy was not even mentioned once after his untimely death...

For sheer amount of random misery heaped upon her, it has to be Buffy but she also got bailed out by the writers way more often than any other character. So I would go with Tara and Wesley. Those two just couldn't catch a break.
 
Hmm Jenny was pretty tragic; sent to the town with a mission and failed it because she fell in love (though I doubt she could've done much anyway) then having everyone abandon her. Then gets killed once she finds the solution to the error at the hands of the person she was going to help after just starting her first steps to forgiveness from her lover. Huh.
