Buffy was the better show. It just worked better as an independent whole than Angel did. So much of what made Angel great would have been lost on you if you hadn't ever seen Buffy. This is less true the other way around. The first season of Angel relied heavily on hooking viewers who'd already seen Buffy. You had Oz, Spike, Buffy, Faith crossovers that moreless worked on their own, but were almost certainly much better appreciated by viewers of Buffy. And a lot of the backstory of Angel, Cordelia, and Wes (though to a lesser extent) had already been established on Buffy, so attempts to define these characters in early Angel were somewhat redundant. There were also A LOT of references to Buffy or things that happened on Buffy in Angel. It's true that there were some in Buffy as well (Andrew talking to some guy named Fred on the phone), but there were a lot fewer of them since none of the characters were really present for the events in LA to later reference them. Buffy also kept a more consistant cast than Angel, even if a few people did come and go throughout the show. The title character is the only one present at the beginning and the end of Angel. And then in season five, the show went back to throwing in a lot of Buffy castaways. Harmony and Spike may have both appeared in Angel prior to season five but their heavy inclusion would have to seem almost baffling to a viewer who'd never seen Buffy. Angel also seemed less clear in its mission-statement than Buffy. Buffy was all about female empowerment (okay, also entertainment). Angel started off as something of a monster-of-the-week show, evolved a bit when the gang moved to the Hyperion and Gunn joined, and then changed a great deal again when they moved to Wolfram and Hart.

Buffy wins for me. Angel did have a better finale though.

Well, Angel certainly has a place in my heart, and is definitely in my top five favorites....BUT Buffy will always be my favorite show. I'm fairly certain that will never change.

How was that post long enough to meet the minimum number of characters, anyway?

Buffy is 100000x better. People always say ANGEL was darker, but the only thing that's darker about ANGEL was the lighting/coloring of the show. :|

I think Buffy was the best show ever created. There's something comforting about it... I feel at home watching it, and when it ended, I felt as though I was losing some of my best friends... not to sound sappy. But it's true, I was attached to this show more than Ive even been attached to another.

I love Angel, though. It was wonderful in its own way, and it had some amazing episodes. It made me laugh out loud at times, especially in the first season. Every time I re-watch it, there are moments that I have to rewind and re-watch, as they're endlessly funny.

But then, Angel had some truly depressing aspects to it. I'm starting to notice it more now that Ive re-watched it a few times. Wesley's character change really saddens me. Especially when you look at it in the context of his character on Buffy. His spirits were crushed as he grew wiser and more experienced.

Then there's Lindsey, who my heart always went out to. Even though he was a part of W&H, I never really saw him as evil... just... lost. And I hated the way Angel treated him. Something about the actor, too, that just tugged at my heart. Christian Kane has a sorrow in his eyes that just makes me want to reach out and hug the guy.

So, what I'm trying to say is... I love both shows. But Buffy (specifically S1-5) is like home to me. There was always a perfect balance between emotions, and relatability. Whereas Angel had a tendency to make me sad...

Ummmm, no. I like Buffy better, but Angel was definitely a darker show than Buffy. That really isn't even debatable.

I agree, well, with the exception of Buffy S6. Overall Angel was a darker show, but Buffy S6 was arguably darker than Angel, at the minimum as dark.

Think about it, Angel's core team was never seduced by evil. Cordy got tricked by Jasmine and Wes got tricked by Holtz/Sajhan, but they both thought they were being loyal to "good" and Angel. Willow on the other hand got seduced by magic and Buffy went pretty dark too.

angel is just as good, but nothing will ever beat buffy.
if it wasn't for buffy i woudnt of watched angel.

I have no problem with people preferring Angel but it never ceases to amaze mw how many people insult Buffy in the process.
Like I've read people who simply refuse ot call it the Buffyverse and thus refer to it as the Angelverse.

For one thing, Buffy started it all. There'd be no Angel if not for her and that show. So it frickin' deserves to be called the Buffyverse.

As for which show was better...they both had their merits. I loved Holtz, Connor and Lindsey. I also loved The Mayor, Faith and the great Glorificus. So each show has something I like.
