Which was the most depressing, shocking, and suprising death in the buffyverse?

Both Joyce Summers and Tara's death were hardest because they were so "real". No returning from that realm, unlike the deaths by supernatural means. In fact I can't watch either episode without crying to this day.
 
I'm surprised no one's listed Kendra.

This is a hard question for me, considering I was watching the entire Buffy series in hindsight. I knew who wasn't going to make it to the end. Still, that didn't make "The Body" any less shocking to me. So I guess I'll go with Joyce.
 
Lilah's death was chalk full of shockness. She finally gets away from Angelus, and you think is safe now that she is with Cordy, and then, BAM! She stabs Lilah in the neck! That ticked me off royally. I loved Lilah, she was starting to come down from her evil high and she and Wesley were making it work.
 
I believe Joyce's was, I knew it was going to happen, although the acting in that episode were what really got to me. Everyone played their role so well and made it seem as if it was really happening.

Also, I have to say Angel, I was sooo upset when he died, back in Becoming Part 2 and it was so angst filled since his soul had returned and she had to kill her loved one.
 
Ok. It was really hard to narrow this down, but here's my top three:

In 3rd place - Doyle. I knew Glenn Quinn had only signed on for a handful of episodes, but I just really liked the character.

In 2nd place - Jenny. One of the few deaths that I didn't see coming. Excellent shock value and character reactions.

And the winner is - Tara. Ok, so I knew it was coming, but still...! I mean, death by demon is one thing, but death by psycho-with-a-gun just seems so much more "real world". Although not the most surprising death, it's the one that sent the biggest shiver down my spine.
 
I haven't yet seen the episodes with all the deaths mentioned here, but I do know about them all. Just hearing that they die, or seeing clips in fan music videos, is shocking and upsetting enough for me.

- Angel. It still kills me to watch it.
- Buffy. When she needs to stop the portal from opening in place of Dawn.
- Doyle. Loved the character, he was actually one of my favorites for a while.
- Jenny. She wasn't particularly a favorite of mine, but I love Giles, and I couldn't believe that Joss killed her off... I just felt so freakin' bad for Giles.

Deaths that I know about but haven't fully seen are Joyce, Anya, Tara, and Cordy. I'd imagine that I'd be most upset over Joyce and Tara. Both causes of both deaths just send shivers down my spine - it's not just some demon, it's... real.
 
i knew most of them were going to happen so they didn't shock me. i hated watching jenny's death because even tho i know she was going to die it was so sudden and made realise how mortal we are.
Joyce's was sad and well done
Taras was powerful. there is no other word for thet. But i didn't know that one of them was going to happen and it shocked the hell out of me. Anya, I tohught everyone survived and then that happened and it left me numb.
 
The most shocking for me was Doyle as I never saw it coming due to being spoiler free.
The most depressing has to be Angel.
 
Joyce and Doyle were the most shocking for me. Totally not expecting them! Tara was very depressing though because of the way it was done.
 
I didn't find Tara's depressing, I was in shock for a second, sad for about 1/2 a sec. and then excited about Willow's eyes... I didn't have time to be depressed.
 
The most heartwrenching would have to be Joyce's, mainly becaue a whole episode was spent watching everyone in agony (and like everyone's already said, it was a "natural" death). Surprising, I'd say Tara, but only because I had to leave the house about 5 minutes before it happened, and didn't find out 'til the next day that she died. And...you know who...I figured out early on in the episode they wouldn't make it, especially with the conversation with Wes, but I still cried during the final phone call. Doyle's death, regretably I saw in hindsight. The writers and actors do a wonderful job of portraying all the emotions involved in a loved ones death.
