Who Can't be Doctor Who?

There were some interesting issues brought up on the thread concerning David Tenant's leaving Doctor Who and his replacement.

There's one issue that caught my personal attention.

Which possibility of a new Doctor won't you accept?

Now me, I can accept a black Doctor, but my mind simply balks at the idea of a female Doctor Who. Does that make me more sexist than racist? I don't think so. If they brought back Romana from the alternate universe, and gave her her own series I'd love that. On the other hand, I wouldn't go for a black Superman. Am I more racist than sexist now?

Also I'm noticing people who weren't into the old series are rejecting the idea of a Doctor Who that veers off from the one Russell T Davies created. Doesn't bother me, but it does some.

A Female Doctor

The Doctor, well no. It has nothing to do with sexism that the Doctor has to be a man. The Doctor is simply a man. Changing that is changing the show. I feel that there have and will be plenty of strong women within the show to counter that argument. I think anyone who claims it IS sexism is beyond pathetic.

A Black Doctor

This makes you racist though. Why just black, there are other races, creeds, colours and what not. Or how about a Gay Doctor?

I'm teasing on the racist comment, but the rest I stand by.
I have absolutely no issue with the Doctor being other than white. My personal choice for the Doctor IF I thought it would ever be passed by the BBC would be Colin Salmon. He played Doctor Moon in Library/Forest two parter in season 4.
Another great one would be Adrian Lester (note these two are also favourites of mine for Bond - I think they are both magnificent actors).
The BBC will not allow a Black Doctor, not yet anyway, because they will fear a backlash. They will fear negative reponse from the viewers because as much as we like to deny it, there is still a strong level of racism in society. Its not in full view all the time, but it is there, lurking just beneath the surface. It is very sad, but true. I have friends that deal with it on a daily basis from people you would expect different.

I welcome the day that we can watch 'Colourless' TV and don't see characters being cast (or not cast) based on the colour of their skin, but that is some time off.

An Old Doctor

This I would say is possible. This is wholly dependant on the actor though. Bernard Cribbins played Wilf magnificently HOWEVER I couldn't really see him playing the Doctor. On the other hand, Patrick Stewart as a 'Hartnell' era type Doctor I could see. OK, Stewart is younger, but only by 12 years.
This is that we must remember though, this current series is alot more physical than it used to be. I mean look at all the running that is pretty much essential as a means to keep adrenaline going and keep us hooked.

A Doctor Without Sex Appeal

I would actually hope for this. I don't mind the occasional 'Girl in the Fireplace' type story but season 4 was SO refreshing because The Doctor lost the sex appeal. As viewers we're forced to see the Doctor through the eyes of the Companion, so with Rose we fell in love with him, as we did with Martha BUT we also felt its unrequited side.
Donna on the other hand, he was a best mate. Because Tennant wasn't playing a love interest, we lost interest in the love aspect and thus the sex appeal went. He was still bloody good though.

While I have no issue with the Doctor being Gay in fact would welcome it, I do think its a long way off before we see Captain Jack playing with The Doctors Sonic Screwdriver.
Reasoning - same as why we won't see an Ethnic minority Doctor any time soon.

I want the doctor to have that 'certain sexy something'! He doesn't have to be conventionally attractive but he has to have charm that makes him sexy.
Also, it might be obvious but I certainly lean heavily towards a male Doctor.

I don't see Moffat going with the metro-sexual theme the way Davies did. It doesn't appear to be any kind of priority for him. I'm comfortable with that. If the BBC insisted on more gayness, that would be wrong.

You want him to be attractive to you - fair game but you have to remember its different strokes for different folks.
What one finds sexy others may not.

I find that the key ingredients for a GOOD actor to play The Doctor are:
Fun
Plausibly Intelligent
Witty
Charismatic
Unequivocally British - and proud of it
Plausibly Eccentric

Get those right and I think you will find him attractive.

Moffat wants a darker edgier Doctor BUT I don't see how the BBC insisting for more Gayness is any worse than the BBC insisting on, well, anything. The BBC fund the show and have right to express the opinion, but the writers and fans should be the ones that have final say of where they think a Doctor should go. IF the general pop/fan base wanted and felt comfortable with a Gay Doc, and the writers thought it doable, I would have no issue with it.

Even though the Time Lord appeals to a lot of people world-wide,at its heart the show is British to the core.

And someone who wasn't born in the UK wouldn't translate to it as well.

That's why I selected "not UK born".

I don't want a female Doctor - I agree with BOTD, that would just change the show. I admit I don't like the Donna-Doctor no-sexual-tension relationship, but not having sex appeal is not a deal breaker for me. I wouldn't mind the Doctor being gay, but I much prefer what they did initially with Captain Jack (and the Doctor I feel when Jack was introduced in the Empty Child) which was to make it like people in the future didn't really blink at gay or straight or bi. Now they've kind of swung Jack over into being just gay, which I think kind of lost that charm of his character, where he could flirt with Rose and the Doctor at the same time.

Having said all that, I'd only be pissed off if it was a female Doctor.

I loved the whole bisexual in the future, or Captain Johns omni-sexuality or whatever, but when Captain Jack got his own show, seems to me that Russell T Davis wanted to do a 'Queer as Folk' with Aliens.

Don't get me started on that rather sill episode Captain Jack Harkness of season 1.

Its like since though, if Jack can't have Gwen, he will swear off women and simply use Ianto (who is better than Gwen in every way - and I mean that) for sexual gratification.

Totally agree with you there. It was cool when Jack was like "Men or women, doesn't matter." I so don't get the whole Gwen thing at all.
