Who is Buffy Meant To Be with?

Both vampires connected with her dual nature and loneliness and saw her as a ray of light. She suffered emotionally and physically and was inspired and felt genuine happiness and learned a lot about life and love from both Angel and Spike.

For Angel, she was the embodiment of the “innocence” he would never have and represented all of the victims of Angelus, helping her was like starting to make amends. The world-traveled vampire with a bicentennial learned selfless heroism and how to live in the world from a California ingénue. She was the first person he truly loved in over 200 years. He staked his sire for her. She was his first time making love despite being sexually active since the 1700s. He experienced true happiness with her and lost his soul. He said her name as a mantra to try to stave off the soul extraction. He was sent to Hell and still loved her 100 years later. She freely offered all of her blood to cure him which lead to an erotic embrace. She could sense him when he was human and from hundreds of yards away. His bite is her only physical scar. He kissed her in the sunlight. He gave up his humanity for her. They each mourned in exile for months over the other’s untimely death. She could enter his dreams unaided by hallucinogens or magick. He gave her a Claddaugh ring which he remembered as a symbol for love, friendship, and loyalty in his mortal youth in Galway. He dreamt of their wedding in a Cathedral and walking hand in hand into the sunlight. He gave her up because he believed she deserved better than him. She nursed him back to health after the Sire Restoration ritual and his return from Hell. She was the first Slayer to willingly lose her virginity to a vampire. He’s the most notorious vampire in history and she’s the most legendary Slayer. The Powers That Be aligned their destinies so that they joined the fight against evil within twenty-four hours of each other and the Universe chose for them to survive the War on Magicks.

With Spike, he loved her without a soul and showed more compassion and tenderness than some souled humans are capable of. He got a soul for her. He was a Clockwork Orange experiment and she suffered suicidal depression from being cast out of Heaven via dark magick. A sadomasochistic sexual affair with him was her only reprieve. He saved her from the death dance exactly one year after explaining that all they‘ve ever done is “dance” and that every Slayer has a death wish. He cleaned her bloodied hands that clawed out of the grave. He gave her the strength to face Caleb and find the Scythe. He healed her heart enough to say “I love you” for the first time in four years. He was tortured by a Hell Goddess to spare her emotional pain. She believed in his ability to conquer the trigger and deal with having a soul enough to remove the chip. He continued loving her even when she hated him. He changed to try to be worthy of her. He stayed watching her quasi-daughter and irritating friends for five months after her death out of respect to her memory and regret that he had failed to keep his promise to protect Dawn while Buffy fought Glory. Spike stood by her when all of her friends abandoned her and mutinied against her. He said “she will come for me” as a mantra and didn’t fall into despair when kidnapped and tortured because he knew Buffy believed in him. He jumped heart exposed into courting her despite the hurt of having already been in love with a woman who loved and was bedded by Angel.

This one is a tough one for me.

Angel/Buffy will always be considered soul mates but I dont know if they are meant to be together. Angel will always be her number one her first love but can they work? I dont know. I feel that Angel and Cordy could have had a serious relationship and maybe could have ended up together. They grew together on the show. Which brings me to Buffy and Spike.

Buffy/Spike started out as enemies and became so much more. To me Buffy took the time to really love Spike. She went from hating him to really needing him and appreciating him. This was wonderful to watch. Spike became such a good person when he was with Buffy. (He was always my favorite though anyway). I think that just because Angel and Buffy are soulmates doesnt mean they will be together. I kind of look at Buffy as a Pacey and Joey kind of always meant to be together in the long run, like it was leading to them.

The only reason she should pick Riley is if she wants a normal life like a family and such but since she is the slayer I dont think Buffy would do that.

So in the end it doesn't matter to me she can be with Angel or Spike. But sometimes Angel is better sometimes Spike is better I differ every time I watch. In the end though I could see her with Spike.

crazysoulless agrees: Well, there are about 2000 other Slayers now so it's not *just* Faith. Though I do love Fuffy!

It's different now that there are lots, but Faith and Buffy are the only people who can understand what it's like to be The Chosen Two.

Well I'm one of those boring people who'll say that Buffy isn't meant to be with anyone.
However I do hope that she chooses to be with Angel 😀

I don't think she should be with either of them. She loved Angel, but they've both moved on and are too different now - plus I never thought that they were that good together. She just used Spike he deserves better than her. Riley just was too good and nice for her.

tough choice i always loved her with angel and he was like her first big love
but then i really like spike
but yeh ill go with angel

Until Angel cures himself of his silly little Gypsy curse, he can't be with anyone so Buffy would be stupid to wait for him. I would think she'd choose to be with Spike if she were made to choose now. However I kinda of agree with Taake in that she isn't meant to be with anyone and neither is Angel. Spike will probably wind up with someone eventually. Hell, maybe even Dru in another lifetime (Assuming she finds herself a soul lol @thought)

Spike. First, last and only. I loved Angel for Buffy, but he got too broody and she needed a "little monster in her man" as Spike would put it (when talking to Riley about who should be with Buffy in S5).

But I think Buffy needs some normalcy in her relationships, so I'll go a little off the cuff and say that if she can't be with Spike, she needs to be with Wesley. He's a former Watcher, a rogue demon hunter, and knows how to take care of himself.

I think Buffy should be with Dan ;P Their ship would be Duffy!

I support this 'ship and you should all support Braith! (Me, Brandon and Faith) :)
Hmmm.... I guess Duffy would be a great ship.... but I'm still all about Spuffy all the way.... I think you should make your case, and bring me over to the "darkside"

Duffy would be the PERFECT love! Trust me 😉

Oh and about this thread, honestly at this point my choice is Spuffy for the ships that actually were shown on the show. But personally I think Bander and Fuffy would have been the right fits for Buffy. For different reasons obviously. Faith is a slayer just like Buffy so she understand her, and then she's as strong as her. The two most important things for Buffy from what we've seen. Also they had great chemistry. On the other hand(and I know not a lot of peoples agree), Xander would be perfect because he could probably turn Buffy over to a different kind of relationship. He wouldn't be dependant like Riley was and he know her as much as it is possible to for a guy.

*awaits the Spuffy and Bangel shippers*

Fuffy karma! And Bander is OK, I just prefer them as friends
Giles. Totally Giles. 😛

This made me lol so much!

To be honest, I don't think Buffy can have a healthy, long-lasting relationship with either Angel or Spike. Of course, being a Spuffy fan, I lean towards Spike. I don't know...it just seemed to me that Angel and Buffy's relationship didn't really develop all that much. It was pretty much 'I've loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you. We're meant to be together forever and ever'. Also, Buffy was 16 yrs old, so...I don't know...I guess what I like about Spuffy is the challenges it took for them to finally trust, have respect for and love (whether as a friend or more) each other. Spike really got to know her. Also, I didn't like Angel when he was with Buffy. I only started liking him on his own show.

Also, what's with Angel/Twilight in season 8? It's REALLY weird.

Overall, realistically, I think Angel and Spike are both better off without Buffy as a girlfriend. It's damaging for them. They should just be really close friends.

But unrealistically, letting my fangirl hopes go wild, it's Spuffy all the way! 😛

Unfortunately, I have to admit Buffy is either 'meant to be' alone or with Angel, though personally I don't think they're good together.

I used to believe that the romance between Buffy and Angel was one of a kind, that they were destined to be together until the day Buffy died, however the relationship didn't do any good for Buffy and she then went on to have a rebound relationship with Riley, in both relationships she came across as the weak willed one, always forlorn and a slave to love, but with Spike she seemed to find herself, her inner beast perhaps, he gave her things no other had and he died to save her and the potential slayers....obviously being dead didn't last long, but thats a pattern with both Spike and Buffy isn't it, nothing can keep them down, I will forever believe that for all his faults Spike is Buffys true love, their volatile relationship made for fantastic viewing but also really drew you in, I don't know about the rest of you but in those final episodes of Buffy when you saw them getting closer again, it just brought a smile to my lips and whilst Buffy believes she's cookie dough I believe her and Spike are soul mates and that with him she's fully baked. lol:cool2:

I like this post very much 🙂

Angel, there is something b/w them that never went away, plus, reading the hints from S8, I think Joss might agree too.

I know! And that makes me so sad for Spike 🙁

i still have hope for spuffy im there with you :)

I'm a newbie here, so I figured I'd offer my two cents since this seems to always be a major Buffy debate. If we're talking about whether Buffy is meant to be with Angel or Spike, I have to go with Spike.

After recently watching all 7 seasons, I agree. I think Buffy and Spike were soulmates. But, I also think Buffy and Angel were soulmates too. Hear me out on this one. The early seasons of Buffy pretty much made it crystal clear that Buffy and Angel had something special and a deep connection. She was a slayer who fell in love with a vampire, her first love no less, And since getting his soul, Angel learned to fall in love, one that was real (not like what he had with Darla). So, when people say Buffy and Angel had a pure love, I completely agree because it was based on the innocent first love that they shared together. And in that sense, they were soulmates.

However, I personally got annoyed with Bangel in season 3. And in a way, maybe that was the point. Their love was based on innocent, but true feelings rather than a deep understanding of each other. And that doesn't always mean a relationship will last. Both of them needed to mature (yes, even Angel).

Enter Spike. Even without a soul, Spike developed true feelings for Buffy. And I am positive that in season 6, Buffy was falling for Spike. She just did not want to admit it because he didn't have a soul. As the slayer, how could she justify falling for a vampire with no soul? So, we know the story. Spike then gets his soul. And season 7 is really where Buffy and Spike begin to truly understand each other, I think more so on Buffy's part toward Spike. With that growing understanding and mutual respect for each other, I think Buffy again developed feelings for Spike (or maybe they never even went away). You see the closeness between them in the last few episodes. And what confirmed to me that Buffy and Spike are soulmates was in Chosen, with their hands embracing and the fire erupting. You do not share a connection like that with someone unless you had a deep and meaningful connection with someone, which is what Buffy and Spike had. Their relationship grew to be based on trust, loyalty, friendship, and love. So, in that sense, they were soulmates too.

So, at the end of the day, if we're choosing between Angel and Spike, I would choose Spike because I think she had a more lasting relationship with Spike. 🙂

Plus, I'd like to think that people have more than one soulmate 🙂

I totally agree i sometimes feel that way about Dawson & Joey and Dawson & pacey that she had two soul mates. Very good point.
Well anyone who knows me already knows my opinion. Angel. She is meant to be with Angel.
-Even though they were apart they still loved one another, evidence of that is Chosen,
-She says in Buffy Season Seven that she'll never love anyone in this world more than she loved Angel
-Being a die-hard Dangel I really hate saying this, Angel loved Buffy, not anyone else when he got his own show. When her mother died he was there for her, he comforted her. Not long after Cordelia went into a Coma, he went over to Sunnydale, kissing Buffy upon seeing her, proving that he truly loved her and not anyone else
-Angel could really have a future with her if the Shanshu is fulfilled within her lifetime which most likely it will. In I will Remember You we saw their relationship could work out if they were both human, unfortunately magic interfered with that
-Angel was only happy with Buffy

Spuffy on the other hand, I can't come up with too many positives for but I'll try
-Spike got his soul back for her, but that was only because of an obsession
-Spike cuddled her the whole night and said it was the best night of his life
-Buffy told Spike she loved him when he burned up in the Hellmouth
For the most part Spuffy is a one-sided relationship whereas Bangel looks very mutual IMO

I always wonder about that line, where she says she loved Angel more than anything in this world. I 100% believe she meant what she said because I think at that point in time, she wasn't in love (or was and just hadn't really realized it) with Spike. I know a lot of people believe that that line shows she's meant to be with Angel, but I don't know if it really does. That's just how I see it.

And I also think Angel was happy with Cordy as well. I think he could be happy with more than one person, at least that's how I saw it.
I think after Buffy died, he realized he could move on and still be happy, which is where Cordy came in. And he just looked so devastated after she died in "You're Welcome."

And if it makes you feel better, I think as Angelus and even after he first got his soul, he did love Darla. 🙂

I'm very anti-Cangel, but thanks for the Dangel comment, one of the reasons why I love Dangel is because they'll always love each other
Well, I like both Spuffy and Bangel as most people know, I'm just more of a Dangel 'shipper. And I like all three 'ships for different reasons. And since I'm going to become a well-known Writer one day I'm trying to learn the perspective of each relationship I see. I like Spuffy because it portrays a man evolving and changing from a demon into a champion, a 'ship that's all about evolving and changing. Whereas Dangel I define as the True Romance of the Buffyverse, they loved each other no matter what and they always will and I believe if Darla were to come back, Angel would go right back to her instantly. And as for Bangel, it's the Classic star-crossed lovers, what's not to like? I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a romantic at heart. And I believe Buffy loves Angel and Spike, but if she ever had to choose I think she would choose Angel.

I think her parents divorce screwed her up too much to have a stable relationship with men.

She should be with Faith. They looked good together.

Riley.

....JK...but seriously, I loved watching her interact with Spike. I'm pretty biased on this since I'm a Darla/Angel/Cordy fan. But take me back to the first 3 seasons and I'll go back to my Angel/Buffy opinion.

Neither. Buffy isn't meant to be with either of them. I'm a Spike fangirl to the death... but neither couple was completely right for each other.
