Who likes Angel?

I enjoyed Angel when he was on Buffy, but, let's face it, he was, at best, Buffy's side kick and cuddle puppy. Once he got his own show, he was allowed to be something more than the guy who had the star's back. I think that that was pretty much the real reason for the "Don't come to MY town..." scene in "Sanctuary." Angel had finally grown up.

Angel is DA MAN! There isn't another character I care more about. He is so openly flawed that I can't help but be endeared to that honesty. People call him boring but when you look at him and his history and the fact that he is STILL going, I don't know how he can be viewed as anything other than fascinating. I like how matter of fact he is, how he doesn't try to be something he is not. I love his strenght, how he literally can have his entire universe upended and still claw his way back. I love that he tries to make himself better, that he tries to right what he has done wrong. I love how much of an absolute dork he can be "They talk about me in the chatty rooms?!?". I love that he is his own man, blazing his own path and learning every step of the way.

I could go on and on...and on but basically I ADORE ANGEL! warts and all!

If you are looking for unbiased opinion (which by the way even if I am biased, it doesn't make me wrong) then you are in the wrong thread pal.

This is a thread to celebrate Angel, not vilify him.

I can't believe I haven't posted on this thread.

For me, as Kean said, it's the heroism and the flaws. He's such a multi-faceted character. I've enjoyed enigmatic Angel, deep Angel, dorky Angel, sarcastic Angel, vain Angel, all the colours really.

I love his fighting philosophies as he's someone who really contemplates the meaning of being a champion, most likely more than anyone in the verse. He is a quester type who desires meaning in an often meaningless world.

People often talk about others when they talk about the most developed character in the Verse but Angel going from down and out vamp to champion was a journey I've been fascinated with. Even his journey as a champion, with his failures and accomplishments, was something I couldn't stop watching. Also Lindsay is right, he is the vampire with big brass testes.

No, you have it wrong. If Angel wins, YOU lose, you and all of your poor lost Bangel friends. But never fear, the Adopt-A-Bangel Society will never give up on you. "Friends Don't Let Friends Ship Bangel" isn't a catchy (okay, brilliant) phrase, it's a pledge, and a mission. You need us, and we are here for you.

But I still like Angel, and think that he never came into his own until he got out of Buffy's shadow. That has nothing to do with who he snuggles up on the couch with at the end of the day. As for the merits of Spuffy over Bangel, in this thread, at least, "P'tooie! We shall speak of it no more."

It's the opposite for me - I really dislike Angel on BtVS, but he becomes marginally more bearable when on his own show.

I'd still say he's amongst my least-favourite characters, though.

Angel is just....really interesting. I love how unpredictable he is. He's a big damn hero, that's what he is. And he's funny! In a subtle way...

I like what he says to Kate; 'If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.' I think that quote might just encapsulate everything Angel and his show is about: Never Stop Fighting, never give in, never give up, and keep fighting the good fight.

When I thought of this myself it reminded that for some reason I adore the bit in 'Bad Girls' (I think) when the big pink flabby demon thing is asking for the name of the 'man who has his amulet' and then Angel comes in all vamped out and says 'His name is Angel'. Kick. Ass.

I adore Angel. I was kinda "meh" on him before AtS, but once he got his own show he became a much more interesting and engaging character. He was OK on Buffy, but he kinda just had two settings, "Brood" and "Brood over Buffy". On AtS he had "Brood" and "Awesome" and "Funny" and "Dark" and "Singing" and "Philosphical" and "Dorky" and so much more... he was just a more fun character to see. I think that's the main reason why I love Cangel and dislike Bangel, but that's another argument.

I love Angel because despite his darkness and angstiness, he's still everything a hero should be. He's a true champion. I love his speeches to Kate ("If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.") and Connor ("Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, and cruel. But that's why there's us. Champions. It doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be.") Despite everything, he still fights the good fight, and I respect that. He's now my joint-favourite character with Faith.

I love Angel a lot, but he's not one of my favorite characters or anything.

I also dislike him on Btvs. In Buffy, his sole purpose was pretty much JUST to be Buffy's love interest. He didn't evolve, he wasn't complex, he wasn't even particularly interesting. He was just a tortured vampire who loved Buffy and vice- versa. There simply wasn't much to him at all.

But on Angel, he really becomes his own character. He's a lot more complex, happy, interesting, and fun. He's mostly stopped with the broody and his character has strengthened. He's a lot more four- dimensional and heroic. 🙂

If it helps Flannen, I loathe Angel, his attitude and actions (not all or all the time, but enough) but I can't keep from liking him at the same time. He's damn adoreable, and easy to feel for. That's why his bad actions hurt more than other people actions :'(
