Who Likes BtVS Season One?

I'm a believer in being loyal to something all the way through. I have no season of Buffy, that I've seen, that I don't like because I hate to not like something out of a franchise or whatever that I'm interested in.

Seriously though, I love season 1. It's maybe not as strong as some of the later seasons but it does do it's purpose. It introduces us to, and lets us get to love, the characters. There are funny lines the whole way through from all of the characters that get you to realize their idividual sense of humour in a simple and effective way. Sure, the Big Bad...The Master is pretty pathetic but you didn't need a constantly amazing villian in this season. All you really needed was a series of small tasks and battles that the Scoobies had to overcome and you just get to know them as they do so.

There were some episodes that fell flat and some overall moments in the series but overall I did enjoy it. Especially 'Witch' and 'Nightmares'. I'm not sure why those are my favourites but they definetly are.

I like season 1 just fine. When I revisited the series in full earlier this year, I was surprised at how much I genuinely liked Buffy herself. "The Witch" is one of my favorite episodes of the season, because it shows Buffy as not only a very funny, very goofy person (singing "Macho Man" and 'oooh, juice!') but when she's taken out by the spell, and lifted on to the table by Giles, even that early in the series you could see not only how dangerous her life is, but how much care Giles shows for Buffy.

Buffy as a vampire was very disturbing to see in "Nightmares".

If I had one complaint about season 1, it would be the score. It went the stereotypical cheap synthesized horror music route and was pure cheese. Luckily it was only for that one season.

I do. I know a majority of fans are of the opinion that it is the weakest, most underdeveloped season, and while that may be true in part, I still really like and enjoy season 1 for what it represents to the series as a whole. Season 1 is classic Buffy, the place where it all started. For that alone it should be appreciated and respected.

Season 1 is definitely one of my favorite! Sure it wasn't the most developed but you also have to factor in that it didn't have a full season to tell its story and it couldn't leave anything on a cliffhanger because they didn't know if they'd have the chance to make more episodes.

I love how overall light-hearted it is; compared to later seasons it's really thrilling to be able to go through multiple episodes in a row without one of the main characters having some kind of major crisis and breaking down into tears. Stuff came up, they handled it, time to party. That sort of light-heartedness really made the drama in Prophecy Girl much more powerful so that it really grabbed my attention. The way Buffy reacted when she found out that she was supposed to die was so well done that I came close to crying for her. How you could tell how much Giles cared for her already by looking at his face while she talked. That he was willing to sacrifice his own life for her by taking on the master on his own...man that's good television!

As those who have read my previous posts no doubt know, I'm someone who really loved how brilliantly the writers mixed the real world with the Buffyverse in the earlier seasons and season 1 probably did the best job out of any of them. The supernatural world really seemed like a secret underbelly in Sunnydale that those living there could easily go by without noticing.

The more I re-watch the series, the more I like season 1. So much so that it's in competition with season 3 for my 2nd favorite season (both behind season 2).

Season 1 is the reason that I ended up watching all of Buffy. On a whim, I found Season 1 for 15 bucks at FYE 5 years ago. A friend of mine said that if I didn't like it, he'd buy it from me. Watched it over and over again before starting to pick up the remaining seasons.

Got hooked on Angel and Firefly later on. Buffy, though, was my first experience with anything Whedon and Season 1 was great. If I were to make a Buffy musical, I'd base it on Season 1.

It's the weakest season of the show in my opinion, but it;s still better than most of the stuff you see on tv.
Had some great episodes, and witty dialog aplenty. 🙂

Season 1 is actually one of my favorites. It may not be the strongest season of Buffy ever but that doesn't make it any less interesting in my book. The Master was scary and a bit funny at times and I loved watching the beginning of the friendship between Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles.

I find season one kinda lame, but I still love it because it's the beginning of my favorite shows ever created. I do love the first episode though. And, of course, I love meeting Angel...

and the beginning of Bangel.
It's definitely the weakest season in my opinion, but it's still very good. The characters are there, the humour is there, and although the writers were still finding their way it works a lot of the time. Prophecy girl is a great episode, and episodes like The Pack, Angel and Welcome to the Hellmouth were great as well.

It also had two of the worst, I Robot, You Jane, and Teacher's Pet, but overall I enjoy it.

I disagree with those who find Season 1 to be the weakest season. It had a continuous plot, a discrete beginning and end, it had fun character development, it had witty interactions, and it introduced a watching world to the greatness of the Buffyverse. I adore Season 1 and it had some great, memorable moments.

Season 1 is one of my absolute favorites, I never tire of watching it. Repeatedly it reminds me what got me into the show to begin with. I always thought it was a great start to the series and though I suppose it has its weak spots it's nothing that has ever really bothered me 🙂

Also - I love the Master, I just do 🙂

Seconded.
I like season 1 because it is a kind of introduction of everyone. And the episodes are really good. I love "Teacher's Pet" and "Angel" !!

I`ve never liked season 1. Well, I did offcourse like it the first time I watched it on tv, but after more and more seasons aired I found it more and more stupid. Never used to watch any of the episodes even when I bought them on dvd. They all look so different, the scripts and the humor is so cheesy, the special effects are crap and there are so many cringeworthy moments.

BUT, I`ve just started to rewatch the entire season and actually managed to find peace about the fact that I HAD to watch season 1 before the good episodes starts. And as I watch them over (just finished "I Robot, You Jane") for the first time in VERY many years I find it AWESOME! I love season 1 now! It`s still the badest season in my opinion, but I appreciate it much more now than I did back then. It`s also a lot of nostalgia watching season 1 and it makes me wish we still lived in the 90s. I love the 90s! (SPICE GIRLS ROCK!!! lol!). And I can`t wait to watch the rest of them!

Hm...wonder if I will love the other seasons even more that I do now after I`ve rewatched them. I haven`t rewatched the show in many years now. Just popped in an episode here and an episode there. But I`m glad I decided to do it.

After Buffy, I will start rewatching Angel. Most of those episodes haven`t been watched more than once! I never found Angel as rewatchable as all the Buffy episodes has always been to me. Always loved the show though...

Oh well...over to "The Puppet Show" now! 😀

Spice girls karma lol
I watched it again recently and have to say, I liked it better than I thought I did. Wish it would've went longer and established the Master as a more formidable foe than he was.

Yup, agreed, I think that The Master had so much more potential, one of favourite villains in the entire show.

Anyway, yeah, I really liked Season 1. Some great episodes such as Welcome to the Hellmouth, Harvest Girl, Nightmares and Prophecy Girl.

Funny story actually, S1 of Buffy actually desensitised me towards Vampires. I used to be scared witless of Vampires before watching Joss Whedon's humourous take. I used to fear Gary Oldman's Dracula and Tom Cruise's Lestat as a kid, but after embracing Buffy, I finally watched those films and I LOVED them. 🙂

Whoops thanks, I meant The Harvest. 😱

Hey, I love S1! Of course it lacks the production values of the later seasons, and it doesn't benefit from long thought and reflection. But the S1 Buffy is the most vulnerable of the lot, the one whose problems and possibilities are most real and accessible, at least to me. She's the "everywoman." It's common for fans to say that Buffy helped them through a difficult time in their lives. I suspect it's S1 Buffy that they really mean.

First seasons of shows aren't always very strong, they haven't found their pace yet. But, Buffy's first season was a great start. The action scenes are a lot different from the action scenes in later seasons, like stronger scenes later, but it's so fun to re-watch.
