Who likes Riley?

Something that spuffy and bangel fans can always agree on is that we hate Riley...

karma for making an EXCELLENT point!

What's funny is that Joss Whedon acknowledges that fans did not like him. That's just crazy creative skills right there by the "J"-man!
Nope, I tried but failed to like Riley. Not 'my' type of the guy at all. Plain, boring, over-too-confident with potential rivals for Buffy's heart, yet too irresolute with Buffy herself.

And he doesn't look good. No, no points for Riley. Hit the Road, amigo!

I liked Riley when he was Regular Joe. When it was revealed he was in The Initiative, I started disliking him. Especially in Goodbye Iowa when he is going through those withdrawal symptoms. Although, I did feel bad for him in season five.

Actually I really never liked Riley. But it was mainly how he was acting. All Initiative like and stuff. But after awhile I came to accept him. I think he was cool, and normal. Maybe too normal for Buffy.

This is what I posted on another forum.
" didn't like Riley at first but that was mainly because he wasn't Angel. Riley started off as Average Joe with a smidch of superhero. He actually seemed perfect in a lot of ways and certainly from his perspective things were great. He could hold his own against the forces of darkness and he doesn't have the emotional or mystical constraints Angel has.

I think Riley's world crumbled as he fell deeper in love with Buffy. He found out about the morally ambiguous methods of the Initiative, faced Angel and Oz in a few short months he has to change is entire world view on demons and vampires. He lost his super powers and had to contend with the idea that he couldn't invoke the same emotional reaction from Buffy has Angel or even Dracula.

I agree that Riley likes Buffy's strength but Riley insecurity is whether he wasn't strong enough for her. It was a childish reaction but he felt he was losing her and let us not forget that Buffy has her life as a Slayer but Riley lost his Intiative lifestyle.

Also Buffy didn't let him be a part of her slaying life, which is a huge part of her life. But before we think that Buffy thinking of Riley when she's doing this, she's happy enough for him to go alone but just doesn't really want her near her when she's doing to slaying.

Buffy cannot handle emotional trauma that's facing her at all sides. Riley had the right idea when he said, he wanted to take care of her, but he didn't articulate it correctly. Buffy was in the land of not dealing and she's done this before. Opening up can be scary but it's part being emotionally stable and balanced and having well formed relationships. Buffy's actions were not exclusive to Riley but in a romantic relationship sometimes it takes up more significance. Xander, Joyce and even Spike all understood this.

However Riley's response to this is what hurt Buffy. Riley's betrayal wasn't let off on a technicality because the point was that Buffy felt hurt by the emotional responses (albeit on the most basic level) and thrills he was getting elsewhere. Metaphors were mentioned in the other thread I think but that's not really the point for me. Riley was getting something elsewhere that he wasn't getting from Buffy and he was getting it from female sentient beings who closley resemble humans. We almost don't need the metaphor because the betrayal stares us in the face.

I think that Riley didn't feel emotionally needed, not in the way that one might need a boyfriend. Buffy finally realises she does but then it's too late.

As for Riley's return. Many think he got over Buffy way too soon. I'm a little half way. I think Riley started his grieving period when he was with Buffy and that happens sometimes. It's like we shut down, slowly but surely. When he was ready to get married, he didn't wait around, but it doesn't mean he wasn't ready emotionally. It's different for different people."

Another thing, here...

I think Riley was BtVS' answer to Angel's whole leaving Buffy so that she could have a life in the sun with a regular guy thing. I mean, it doesn't work. Buffy with Captain America couldn't work. In some ways, the problems that undermined Buffy's relationship with Riley aren't just representative of her relationship with him; they're representative of her romantic relationship with any human. No matter how much she might want to be a regular girl, Buffy's not a normal girl who can lead a regular life with a regular guy. Really, the slayer either needs to be alone (like Faith) or she needs a vampire consort (like Buffy). A regular guy just can't do it for her (I'm not talking about sex; I'm talking about the entire slayer lifestyle) because a regular person, even a super powered demon fighting soldier boy like Riley, is never going to be able to handle a relationship with her. A slayer is a demon/human hybrid. The demon part of her needs the demon part of someone else.

In the Buffyverse, demon seeks demon. That's why Cangel only happened after Cordy was demonfied and why the closest thing Angel has to a normal girl is Nina, who is a werewolf. In some ways, Buffy trying to be with Riley was a bit of a perversity of the natural order of things.

Riley never sat well with me. For one thing he was a poor substitute for Angel. Secondly, his strength and abilities came from an Iniative stimulant that once worn off he became a complete wuss. Third, he was part of the group that neutered Spike :freak: Finally, he disses Buffy to get his freak on with some vampires and then puts all the blame on Buffy and gives her an ultimatum. What a punk! I'm glad he left...

I didn't like him, but maybe it's because I don't think he was written all that well. He reminded me of a Stephen King movie. (I have issues with most Stephen King movies...and books because it feels all well written and then like the timer goes off and it's "wrap it up NOW...throw in a giant spider!")

I find it hard to believe a soldier would be such a weak ninny and go for some weird form of vampire brothel thing. I think he wussed out a LOT. With the Initiative, while Joyce was sick, with Buffy in general. My 5 year old has more "get up and go-problem solving skills" than he does!

He started out okay, but he seemed to go downhill fast. Now, Graham, I liked him. He seemed to handle everything in MUCH more of a "manly" way. He seemed much more Soldier like strong, took orders, was capable of thinking straight and yet, not being SO "together" that he over shadowed Buffy or made you think he didn't need her help, at times. Maybe it's the actor or just the way Riley was written, but I thought he was just a big wienee!

I always thought Buffy should have someone she could face eye to eye without standing on a bucket. Luckily, after two losers, she finally met a REAL man.

a-hah! Now we know it was just all about height!
Riley was a character I couldn't get into until after he was gone. When I watch some of the series again I think he was great for Buffy, and it's sad when he goes. But at the time I was happy he was gone, and I wanted some Spuffy (until it happened). Think the thing that bugged me was the timing of his relationship with Buffy. Right after I Will Remember You, he's on a date with Buffy already.. I was like wtf?

I love the idea of Buffy with a non-immortal. In fact, I believe if Joss has any sense whatsoever that's what will ultimately happen as I think the idea of a human dating someone who doesn't age a completely retarded concept.

However, I don't like Riley. He was not a great character, he was not interesting, even in "normal" terms, and he and Buffy were an ugly couple. They just didn't mesh well, in my opinion. And I'm just overall not a huge Marc Blucas fan, he kinda annoys me.

I agree, but it would have to be a VERY SPECIAL mortal...perhaps a nice half demon or were wolf. Actually, I think werewolf would be quite nice. They seem to make for handy things to have around at times! Someone part of her world, but then not quite the powers or SAME powers as Buffy. Someone who wouldn't feel left out or helpless like Joyce or Xander, someone who wouldn't feel threatened by her powers, like Riley. Someone who could actually HELP, like Spike and Angel, but we didn't have to deal with that "live forever couldn't have anything resembling a normal life" thing.

That would be cool.
Sheesh. Seems like I am ne here who actually LIKED Riley. According to my opinion, hethe only o was just the perfect and ideal boyfriend. If I (!) could meet and have a relationship with someone like him, I would be the happiest person alive. I mean, he's nice, clever, cute, protective, handsome and tall. He has all the things a girl like me would dream of. That's why he's my second fav male character in the whole Buffyverse. BUT apart from my personal opinion, I can see clearly why anyone else dislikes him. I can see clearly as well why he didn't fit in Buffy's world. I agree that he was too normal, and that Buffy just can't be for a (slayer) lifetime with a guy like him. With great power comes great responsibility - and a Slayer who has to deal with caring about a spouse/lover who is only a simple human being has too obvious a weak point that every second demon could use against her. So I also think that it was better for both of them to break up. Anyways, I just can't stop liking Riley. For me, he was not boring at all. Okay, maybe he was too normal and that can spoil the 'attractiveness' of someone in our world, but I like nice normal guys. It is also true that he just could not fill in the space that Angel left - but I think Spike was not the appropriate person for that either, and also it was NOT Riley's task to do so. There can be only one Angel, only one true, 'I could die for you' - kinda love in everyone's life. (And that is one of my reasons for being a Bangel - fan.) Riley is the kinda guy with whom a normal girl would like to spend the rest of her life. But Buffy is not normal. She's just way too special. Still, I kinda missed Riley - no other Buffy - characters could make me blush in front of the screen. XD

You're not alone- I LOVE Riley... :)
I'm only up to Episode 9 of Season 4, but so far I'm not impressed with Riley. Now granted, I'm sure I wouldn't like anyone Buffy dated b/c I of course want her to be with Angel, but Riley so far seems like a big dork. Maybe my opinion will change as teh season goes on, but I'm hoping he's only on for Season 4.

I never liked Riley, not in a hateful way like Kennedy just...he was boring! Just a boring, irritatingly unnecessary man who acted like a teenage boy with a crush on the popular girl and getting huffy when she didn't spend every second lavishing him with attention.

But then, we did get to see Angel smacking him down for the Hell of it, that made it somewhat better hehe.

yeah, the Angel smacking him down for the hell of it part was good lol.... i didnt like riley either... he was too.... blegh lol.... him and the initiative ruined season 4 for me too....

Riley Vs. Spike?!

I personally don not like Riley! I mean, ok he's an ok guy, but really- he's just another guy. I was not impressed with the Initiative. But of course, during season 4 i was missing angel like crazy so maybe its just me but what did you think? This is just MY opinion but i'd like to hear others!:icon12:
A few thoughts of Riley after rewatching "Out of My Mind":

There seems to be a debate if Buff ever loved Riley...(like if she ever loved Spike..) Here are my opinions on this.

She mentions that Riley knows her better then anyone, she said it herself. She "needs him"...
She did not love him, or she would have said it in the cave in "Out Of My Mind".

Riley: "Loving you's the scariest thing I've ever done, Buffy."
Buffy: "I don't know why." (like, say, now would be a good time!)

This comment I find interesting as well regarding Spike:

"If that's what I wanted, then I'd be dating Spike."

What happens in 6 between Buff and Spike was set up way before, like in season 3. The writers wanted to keep it as a possibilty. For her to even think about dating Spike must mean she had consitered it.

Has anyone else noticed Spike's awesome neck sunburn in this episode? Haha.

Indeed ^o^
Riley got of to a great start, i really liked him in the early episodes, i mean when he punched Parker, that's good stuff. Then his links to the initiative were introduced. Liked Riley, Hated the initiative, combined, don't like either. Shame. He could have been a great character, he just had a crappy back story.

I like and dislike Riley for many reasons he was great at first and it was nice to see Buffy dating someone she could share both a normal and slaying life with. But he was so jealous of all the power she had and that he couldn't match up to that, maybe he wanted to protect her I don't know?

From the start its clear they wouldn't be together forever like Buffy and Angel could have been. I found him to get a little whiny at one point and when Buffy tried to help him when his heart rate was up the creek he pushed her away. To me it showed she did love him but just not enough to say it I think she was scared. I wasn't surprised to see Riley leave Sunnydale, I did feel bad for him as Buffy never told him how sick her mum was until the last minute and she still shut him out.

So there are many pro's and con's as to why I like and dislike Riley, its like marmite... you either love it, or hate it.
