Who should be the next Indiana Jones?

I was sufficiently traumatized by the Crystal Skull to never want to see another attempt to revive the franchise. I did like the greaser fight.

Re: Girl: Look, if they get the Samurai Jack treatment, that is, spend the first 15 - 20 minutes of the movie showing her hanging out with with grandparents and their friends and having crazy adventures and learning great skills, and ends with her passing her exams for her doctorate, as shown by a red line? That would probably be acceptable to all. But, it sounds like another exceptional orphan steals his stuff and takes his nickname, which always feels like the legitimacy of taking a set of clothes by the ole swimming hole.

And that's really the issue, isn't it. Legitimacy. A legacy can be inherited from father to son, and from mother to daughter. Once you get outside of blood, you, as the author , have to work harder to harder to establish the bonds between characters. Which is really hard to do in one movie. It's never been tried with Batman, who never has biological offspring among his children, until very recently. Nightwing's ascension is never preformed. But we will see.

too bad they killed off the son and replaced him with a goddaughter for a best friend never seen on screen or spoken of previously (to the best of my recollection... I don't recall 2 or 4 that well)

Also can we please leave the sexism and politics out of this thread. We know full well that a woman can play this sort of a part just as well as a man, to suggest other wise makes you sound like a dinosaur.
Not wanting a female Indiana Jones is neither political nor sexist. It’s a preference.

I always wanted Matthew Davis, but he might be too old now. Too bad they wasted time on that horrible Shia Labeouf debacle.

Lots who don't want a female--or any--new Indie have no problem with Scully, Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13), and the like (even some Tomb Raider fans). Heck, this is a fan board for Buffy. Most to all would be fine with any sort of original character
Anna Kendrick has shown amazing promise in pitch perfect. Perhaps it could be a mix of action and music Indiana Jones.
Pitch it to everyone!!

I don’t think it is sexist or old fashioned to want a male Indy, anymore than it is wrong to want a female Ripley if they rebooted Alien or a female Clarice Starling, Sarah Connor or Mary Poppins etc

Especially when the character was originally created in the 80's as a nostalgic throwback to old fashioned male action heroes

It just seems lazy to recast an existing male role with a female rather than create a new female one. And in the case of Indy you don’t even need to do that when we already have Lara Croft

Although I am quite excited to see Rachel Weisz's take on the Jeremy Irons character in the rebooted version of David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers (developed by Alice Birch who did the screenplay for the very good Lady MacBeth)

That’s a fair point. But that’s not my problem. This isn’t me being negative about the casting from the original films. It’s more the way people reject the idea of a female taking the role out of hand. Ford has now retired from the role, and it’s 2023, so the way I see it the role is up for grabs for either gender. In the 80s they had more of an excuse, not so much now. I saw the new film yesterday and Phoebe Waller Bridge is fantastic in it. I’d watch a reboot with her in. I’m not saying I want a female Indy, I don’t even want a reboot, but chances are it’s going to happen. If it does they should cast whoever is best for the role, no matter the gender. By now we’ve seen that women can be just as good in action roles as men, so I don’t see the problem. It’s actually more lazy just to cast a generic choice like Chris Pratt.

But as Ford himself said, in multiple interviews, they assured him that he is Indiana Jones and once he's done with the role there will not be another Indiana Jones. So for me it doesn't matter who they recast, if they do recast, it's another example of them not only lying to fans, but to the stars themselves.

Chris Pratt as Indie! lol.

'Woah! That dude's face just melted off! Wow! I'm gonna have nightmares for months!'

But people would also reject it and there would be an even bigger outcry if Chris Pratt was recast as Larry Croft or Tom Hanks as Mark Poppins or Ellen Ripley + Sarah Connor was recast as a male.

I think there are some characters who are essentially sexless like Dr Who. Even though the Dr was traditionally male there was no reason you couldn't have a female Dr. I haven't watched it for a long time so never saw Jodie Whittaker but whether she was good or bad was nothing to do with her being a woman

Or Black Panther. I don't think anyone had a problem with there being a female version in BP2. It didn’t completely work for me but not because it was a female BP. I just though she was overshadowed by some of the other male + female characters, and didnt have the charisma of Chadwick Boseman.

But why take a character like Indy who was created as a throwback to old fashioned male action heroes and do a female version. Just create a new female character or do a Lara Croft film.

I think James Bond is similar. He always represented the good and bad sides of masculinity for better or worse. So it doesn’t make sense to have a female JB. There have already been a few attempts to make a female James Bond style character and eventually there will be one who becomes equally iconic which will be more satisfying than just having a female JB

'Life is like babysitting a bunch a' kids. You never know who you're gonna get'

I'm out...
Why not have the actor undergo a face lift (or several) so that he can appear to be a regenerated Indiana, then have him be voted into a political office. Thing is which political party would he be, an ultra right party for the Nazi's ?

I have no problem with a woman being cast (beyond that I think there shouldn't be a reboot), but I think it would have to be a very different style of story. The Indiana Jones stories took place originally in the '30s, when obviously it would have been unusual for a woman to be an adventurous archaelogist. If she was one, that would have to be an integral part of the story, the woman who defies the odds. Hell, she would have had a hard time even becoming a university professor, like Indy was, in those days. So it would really depend on what they wanted to do with the story.

I can't see anyone else as Indy but Harrison Ford. The character is iconic, should not be rebooted. As for other film franchises, with Alien I believe Sigourney Weaver had a piece of the franchise and how it should go, maybe that was with her character and sequels. James Bond, the Broccolis own the right to Bond and who plays him. I wanted Harrison Ford to have played Jack Ryan a couple more times, in an interview talking about said character he said " I can run and fall" but now that was some years ago. I don't know about other actors playing or rebooting iconic characters and movies. They either should end the franchise or depending on the age of the actor kill them off or find one he'll of an actor or actress than can carry the torch/ mantle and serve them proud.

She would be my first - and only - choice. She's idiosyncratic and has immense presence. Plus she's kinda "gender fluid". I'd forgotten she was in the latest film.

True. Here's a real back story.

Lady Aileen Fox (1907–2005) was one of the first female lecturers in archaeology. She described her desire to do something as a result of having observed the ‘indolence’ and boredom of upper-class Edwardian life for her mother. She was restricted in many ways by her gender. Her father was particularly opposed to her becoming a female academic or a ‘bluestocking’. Although she managed to read English at Cambridge, women were not granted degrees when she studied. She was unable to get a full degree until 1948.

Tom Hanks as Mark Poppins or Ellen Ripley + Sarah Connor was recast as a male.

I'd watch the first. 😄 As for Ripley, "Mother" (phallic mother/archaic mother/imaginary mother/castrating mother) is text and subtext so it wouldn't work. Just no to Chris Pratt in anything - ever.

I think A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was Tom's version of a Mary Poppins type character. And I did like Chris Pratt in Parks + Rec

'Fraid so. 😄 It's not that I have anything against him - except an intense and (absolutely) irrational dislike. He has a face I want to slap - for no reason whatsoever. I think I have "Prattophobia". 😊
