I was having what I thought was an interesting discussion (well, arguement really) with a friend and fellow Buffy fan.

Basically it went like this: Who's the better actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, or Alyson Hannigan?

He says Sarah Michelle Gellar, because she brought a strength of personality to the character of Buffy that makes it impossible to think of anyone else in the role.

I say Alyson Hannigan, because although Sarah is a damned good actress, she was also damned lucky to find such a well written part, that fit her like a glove. Alyson on the other hand has this amazing ability to take different characters like Willow, or Vamp Willow, or Darth Rosenber, or Michelle Flaherty, and breath their own special life into them with deftly played nuances, and below the surface understanding of the characters. I mean, I love the Buffy Bot, but it's not an example of great acting. The Alyson characters are.

I'm curious if anyone else has an opinion on the subject.
 
That is a HARD question to answer! I think that SMG is best at the racey scenes but Allyson is better with the emotional stuff. Good question...
 
I choose Sarah Michelle Gellar, Im quite a big fan of hers. AH is a good actress she was brilliant in American Wedding and in Buffy.
 
Sarah Michelle Gellar is extremely brilliant and awesome! But, I'm gonna have to go with Alyson Hannigan. She was hilarious in the American Pie films, but much better as Willow Rosenberg. I mean, how can you overlook those big beautiful eyes, creamy-colored skin and radiant red hair? It doesn't even matter how quirky or dorky she acts on or off screen. This woman is truly amazing!
 
Need I say?

I personally think, that when it comes to Buffy, we could've done without either of them, as we still have Joss.
 
Alyson Hannigan is superb with whatever is given to her.
 
to be honest i cant choose as i think they are both amazing in their own right willow is always fantastic , buffy can annnoy me but every now and again she just excels herself🙂
 
I'd have to vote for Sarah because we've seen her play different roles in her career. I know Alyson went through a lot of changes in Buffy, but we've really only seen her play one role.

You've seen the American Pie movies, right? Alyson's Michelle Flaherty character is an awesome creation. It was written as a flat one-joke character, yet the actress brings texture and warmth to it, and finds a way to make the audience love a slut.
 
Im going with SMG. She is great as Buffy and I think of things like Buffybot, Buffy as The First, Catherine in Cruel Intentions.....she was fantastic in all those things and more. In I Will Remember You at the end, talk about emotional breakdown it was amazing!

Not saying I don't think Alyson is a great actress cause I think she is great also and I think they both have great acting futures in front of them.

Its very hard to compare the two cause they are very different characters in Buffy and very different actresses.
 
I love Sarah in Buffy and think she's the best. Just love her acting and well just her lol. (Note: She's ONE of my idols, the other is Avril Lavigne lol)
 
They are both good in their own ways, they really can't be compaired in my eyes. They are each differently diverse. Alyson is better in somethings, while Sarah is better then others. So I have to say niether.
 
I would have to say Sarah.

She has played such changing roles, it's hard to believe that it's the same actress. From Buffy, to a ditzy beauty queen, to a member of Myster Inc, and a down to earth cook, and my favorite, the devious Catherine. That part she played I think is what makes her stand out in my mind. Because it's so bold.

We've only really seen Alyson as one character: Michelle from American Pie. And yes, she did a very good job on this and she is great on Buffy (very good at emotion), but in the end, I had to pick

I have to disagree. I found those SMG characters two dimensional.

Now compare Willow to Darth Rosenberg; two diverse, three dimensional characters, and Alyson breathed reality into each of them.
 
I guess it's a matter of roles. We've seen Sarah play Buffy, in which she's played a wide range of emotions, while Alyson brings that certain sweetness to Willow... AH hasn't been in as many well-known roles as SMG, but that doesn't mean she can't be in a role similar to Buffy and excell in it. Their careers aren't over yet... they both have a lot of roles left to play and I'm just going to wait to see what they tackle next.
 
I went with Alyson, mainly because of how Willow has changed throughout the years. AH has really portrayed every characterization of Willow Joss has thrown her really well. Not to cut SMG short, though--she's a wonderful actress too. I especially like her work in s6's Normal Again.
 
I think that Alyson Hannigan si the better actress. I am a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar but i think that Alyson Hannigan is the better actress.
