Why Angel/Buffy?

Their story is so sad and tragic, yet I think that's why they'll have a love that'll last forever... They have so much passion for one another and they *are* truly in love. They want to be together in spite of the obstacles. Whoever that said it can't ever last is wrong. Watching the end of "IWRY" and watching them both want each other so much was heartbreaking...

INT. ANGEL'S APARTMENT - DAY

A clock in his apartment -- not the mantel clock upstairs -- reads: 8:57. Buffy paces, her face etched with worry. A sound turns her around. Angel heads downstairs. He can only look at her, silent and pained.

BUFFY
I'm guessing that expression isn't
because they were all out of fresh OJ
down at the deli...
(anxiously)
What happened, Angel?

ANGEL
Nothing happened... I just...

BUFFY
Where have you been?

ANGEL
I went to see the Oracles.
(with difficulty)
I asked them to turn me back.

BUFFY
(stunned)
What? Why?

Angel moves to Buffy. She's reeling.

ANGEL
Because more than ever - I know how
much I love you -

BUFFY
Oh - no, you didn't-

ANGEL
-and if I stay mortal, one of us will
wind up dead. Maybe both of us. You
heard what Mohra said.

BUFFY
But Mohra's gone. We killed him.

ANGEL
He said others would come.

BUFFY
They always come! And they always
will. But that's my problem now, not
yours - remember?

ANGEL
No. I won't just stand by and let
you fight, maybe die, alone.

BUFFY
(emphatic)
Then we fight together-

ANGEL
Buffy. You saw what happened last
night. If anything, I'm a liability
to you. You take chances to protect
me. And that's not just bad for
you - it's bad for the people we were
meant to help.

Buffy takes this in. It's true but she can't admit it.

BUFFY
So, what, you took a whole 24 hours
to weigh the ups and downs of being
a regular Joe and decided it was more
fun being a super hero?

ANGEL
You know that's not it... How can we
be together if the cost is your life?
Or the lives of others?

Buffy's hard expression crumbles. Her heart breaking all over again as she realizes he's right. Finally-

BUFFY
Angel...

He moves to her. Takes her into his arms, breathes her in.

ANGEL
I couldn't tell you. I wasn't sure
I could do it if I woke up with you
one more morning.

They cling tightly, desperate for each other.

BUFFY
I know. I... I understand.
(with dread)
What happens now?

ANGEL
The Oracles are giving us back the
day. Turning back time so I can kill
Mohra before his blood makes me
mortal.

BUFFY
When?

Angel looks at the clock. It's nine o'clock. The second hand races around the face.

ANGEL
Another minute.

BUFFY
(desperate)
A minute? No, that's not enough time-

ANGEL
We don't have a choice. It's done.

Buffy tries to absorb this. Then-

BUFFY
How am I supposed to go on with my
life knowing what we had, what we
could've...

Angel's expression grows even darker.

ANGEL
You won't. No one will know but me.

BUFFY
But...

ANGEL
It never happened.

She moves to him, quietly frantic, lost.

BUFFY
It did! I know it did!

She embraces him clumsily, needily, eyes wet.

BUFFY
I felt your heart beat.

ANGEL
Buffy...

He, too, is near tears. They kiss with deepest longing.

ANGLE - A second hand. Sweeping toward 12 in extreme close-up.

They keep their faces close, unable to be an inch apart.

BUFFY
Oh, God. There's not enough time.

ANGEL
Shhh, please, please.

BUFFY
(a breathless mantra)
I'll never forget... I'll never
forget...I'll never forget... I'll
never forget...

Whoever that said it can't ever last is wrong.

I completely agree. Their love has survived death, literally. If that isn't true love and ever lasting love, then I don't know what is. Because to me, that definitely is ever lasting. When Angel came back from hell after hundreds of years of torture, and he comes back still loving Buffy as much as ever, this is were "eternal love" comes to play. And after all these years, Buffy still says she loves him more then she'll love anything in her life. Plus, whose to say how long she was up there in Heaven, time moves faster there. And she went to see Angel when she came back! I wish we would've gotten to see that scene. When Angel said, "they pretty much summed it up" about Wesley and Cordy, I'm taking it that some major B/A kissage went on, and we didn't get a chance to see it due to the fact that crossovers were banned at the time. So, we were deprived of that scene. 🙁

I LOVE all of IWRY. I love especially the part when David messes up and says "shh Sarah shh" that made the episode more real. And so much more emotional.

If you're watching the show closely through the years, you'll see that Buffy is still very much in love with Angel. Buffy admitted in "Selfless" that she loved him more than anything she will ever love in this life and she's told Spike that she had feelings for him, but it's not love. Spike knew in "Chosen" that she never actually loved him... thus, the "no you don't, but thanks for saying it" thing. She was sooo glad to see Angel... and she's always denied Spike. Of course, Angel will always love Buffy undoubtedly. Jane Espenson has said that Buffy and Riley never had the fire that Buffy and Angel had and James Marsters, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and David Boreanaz all agree that Buffy and Angel are soulmates. It's eternal true love...

I know, (almost) all of the cast & crew say Buffy/Angel are soulmates. I'll post my thoughts that I posted awhile ago else where. I've posted this so many times, that I just wrote it up on a notepad and saved it 😛
Here goes:

I've been putting alot of thought into things lately, and first I'm gonna start with how people say Spuffy was the "mature" love and Bangel was just a "teenage first love" thing.

In my opinion, its always been Bangel that has been the mature loving relationship. That act like a married couple.

In a graveyard. Angel and Buffy are fighting a pair of vampires. Buffy trips her opponent into Angel's legs.
Buffy: Sorry, honey!
Angel: That's okay.
They finish off both vampires.

Buffy: You never take me any place new.
Angel: What about that fire demon nest in the cave by the beach? I felt that was a nice change of pace.

See what I mean? Just like a married couple. So cute.

The way I saw Spuffy, was that it was about making the wrong choices.
I get how people can like Spuffy in Season 5, yea. But, Season 6 Spuffy.... there was nothing even slightly romantic about that relationship.

Besides, I never fully got Spuffy. They always hated each other, and all of a sudden out of the blue Spike decides to get warm fuzzy feelings for her. Even though I didn't start to dislike Spike's character until Season 6, I think the downfall of his character was Season 5.

Bangel I loved right away. You could see the attraction between the two when they first met. And it was never just a teenage love like most Spuffy's say it is. It developed into a very powerful love. One not even death could part. Its the meant to be one. And when everything is done, its not Spike Buffy is going to be running to, and its not Cordelia that Angel is going to be running to. Those were just like... office romances. Nothing compared to what Buffy and Angel have.

Angel and Buffy had a mutual love of one another. That's the most important difference between B/A and B/S, and one that's often ignored. Too many times people equate the fact that B/S could have sex with the idea that it was a happy and loving relationship. Buffy made clear that her liasons with Spike in s6 were not making her happy.

Angel loved Buffy from the begining. Neither was obsessed with the other, they BOTH wanted to be with the other. In s4/5/6 Spike basically forces his way into Buffy's life. All through season 6 Buffy makes it very clear that she doesn't love him. It becomes very clear that this is something he can't deal with in "Seeing Red" when he tries to rape her, that in itself is an act of desperation born of obsession.

Now for the Angel leaving thing, which constantly gets thrown at us Bangels. I was actually very proud of Angel when he did let her go. Call me crazy, but to me that just showed how much he truly loved Buffy. He knew that he could never give her a normal life, and whats best for her was important to him. As the old saying goes, "If you love someone, set them free. And if they come back to you, it was meant to be."
I think it was better this way for the time being. To quote DB, ""Their story's not over. Their parting in the season finale was actually a blessing. It will help them rediscover something about themselves to make their relationship stronger."
They may lead different lifes right now, but that doesn't change anything. And yea, Buff may have been a teenage when she meant Angel, but just because she has went from a teenage into a woman, I don't believe that changes her feelings for Angel. Love can surpass time and change. And plus, abstinence makes the heart grow fonder. Everytime they meet after a long time, they end up kissing. Its always gonna be like that, as we saw in "Forever." They'll never be over each other, or be able to fully move on. To me, it begins and ends with them. Anyone else that comes in their lifes, is just there to pass the time until they are once again re-united. And as Joss said, "Every time they come together it has enormous power, enormous meaning.."

First love? Yea. True Love? Yup. Just a teenage love? Nope. I don't believe that. Teenage love isn't that strong or powerful, I should know. It only lasts for alittle while, until you forget them and move on. It doesn't last through years. And you wouldn't really be willing to give up your life for that person, or make sacrifices for just a teenage love. Teenage love is Owen, and Scott.

I believe what I am shown. I was never shown Buffy loved Spike. Not once. But I was shown that she did love Angel. Very deeply. And visa versa for him. And I believe that they are True Loves, not to mention almost all the crew said they were True loves, and some say Eternal Love. Oh, as Steven DeKnight said, there were B/A undertones in Anya's speech in All The Way, "Buffy also met the one person she was meant to be with - but the universe didn't allow them a happy ending."

And then there is B/A undertones in AtS. Like when Angel said, "Do have any idea what its like to be so much apart of someone, that you don't know where they end and you begin?" or we can just go with my favorite, quoting Wesley here, "Angel's moment of true happiness occurred because he was with Buffy. You realize how rare that is - true happiness?"

Then there is book quotes, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer was, is, and always will be Angel's soulmate. She knows it, and he knows it, and though she has tried to move on, all other men walk in the sunlight. Angel is her shadow side, the TRUE other half of her, and though they cannot be together as lovers, no man or God, or Powers That Be can sever the deep bond between them". - The Angel Casefiles, published 2002

To me, there is just so many signs pointing to the fact that they are true loves. I've yet to see one for Spuffy. All signs point to no when I look at them together. Even during Season 7. I just can't see that Spike/Buffy are meant to be, nor can I see that Buffy really loves Spike. She will always be in love with Angel. Not even Spike can come between that. I mean, if death can't come between it, certainly Spike can't.

I love the Buffy/Angel relationship and AngelsGirl you express the points really well. And I hope that they do get a happily ever after, but I keep wondering how they are going to do it.

Re-watching IWRY those problems are still there. If Angel gets his Shanshu he's human and even though there are loads of other slayers out there to help Buffy, she's still the slayer. So, I was just wondering how would they get around that.

I've wondered that too. But, this is Joss, he's very creative and there is someway he'll get around that. I just can't wait to see it when it happens! 🙂
And maybe Willow could, you never know. She's become a very powerful witch.

There are a few things I disagree with on the little essay you post, AngelsGirl:

He didn't do it for her. She had no choice; she had to send him to Hell.

They are true equals... Buffy's Slayer strength and abilities are matched by Angel's vampiric strength and abilities.
Not true:

BUFFY: "You hit me."

ANGEL: "Not to go all schoolyard on you,
but you hit me first. And in case
you've forgotten, you're a little
bit stronger than I am
."

-- "Sanctuary"

Sorry... It was just something that really bothered me...

Buffy may be slightly stronger than Angel, but its still only slightly. Besides Spike there's no one else who could match her in a fight and still fight at her side.

Why not like them?

1. Buffy and Angel are soulmates. They are so sweet and loving against one and so... It's just so cute to watch...
2. Im a sucker for romance *lol*
3. There was attraction when they first met:

Buffy: ... why do you come around?
Angel: Maybe I like you...
Buffy: Maybe.

Angel: I did a lot of thinking today. I really can't be around you. Because when I am...
Buffy: Hey, no big. Water... over the bridge, under the bridge...
Angel: When I am all I can ever think about is how badly I want to kiss you.
Buffy: ...over the dam... Kiss me?
Angel: I'm older than you, and this can't ever... I better go.
Buffy: H-how much older?
Angel: I should...
Buffy: ...go... You said...

There are some few reasons

That was really sweet...One more reason: Buffy neede someone strong not to feel all the time to be in charge..

I disagree with your last reason, ana8. Well, partly, anyway. Angel can be their for her and he is the one who was the more mature in their relationship. He sometimes needed to take charge and not try to live in a fantasy ("The Prom").

Angel and Buffy are almost true equals. I'll settle for that. They fit together because they are complete opposites. Kind of like Yin and Yang, but I don't like to be dramatic or anything. He understands her world and she can deal with his because once they were isolated from other people (i.e. when Buffy was the only Slayer and Angel was the only ensouled vamp). They can fight side-by-side and Riley could never be Angel. He went too dark because he loved Buffy, but she didn't love him back...

I think that Angel is/was the greatest love in her life. I saw this line in a TV show a while ago that would fit to them: "The love of you're life is not always the one that you marry." But in this case maybe: "The love of you're life is not always the one that you will end up with."

I think that at the beginning of their relationship Buffy was more mature than Angel, even though he is so much older than her. Angel had lived so long the way he was, he didn't know how else to be, but Buffy taught him how to trust again. In a way she showed him how to accept himself. She loved everything about him, I don't know whether to say inspite of his vampire side or because of it.

I think that if Joyce had asked Angel to leave in season two I don't think he'd have been strong enough. At that point in their life he was still very dependant of her. In a way he loved and needed her a lot more than she did him. I'm not saying that Buffy didn't love him, just that he needed her more.

Now, I think their true equals (ignoring the physical stuff) Angel has a life of his own, he's his own master now and has come to terms with what he is. He can match her in leadership, he's a champion just like Buffy is.

I don't think their opposites. I think they live in the same world and that's why it would work better than her relationship with Riley. Sure Riley fights for the good side but he isn't part of that world really. Riley is human, Buffy and Angel aren't.
