I didn't start watching Buffy until Season 6, so I had no preconceived ideas about Buffy's earlier boyfriends or about Spike as an evil Slayer killing monster. I saw the two of them working together, the way that Buffy confided in Spike and (arguably) trusted him in ways that she didn't trust anyone else. They were two people who for different reasons had one very obvious thing in common: they felt isolated from the people around them, and it was that isolation that drew them together. That they would fall in love was, to me, inevitable and perfectly natural. When I began watching the earlier episodes on rerun, I saw Buffy in relationships with both Angel and Riley, and neither one seemed to me to "fit" with her the way that Spike would in the later seasons. When I say that I saw both Angel and Riley as simply guys trying to mess around with "Spike's girl," I say it only partially as a joke, but I do, in fact, think of Buffy in that context. She was just marking time waiting for Spike to come along.
