Why I love Dawn

2 reasons.

The Body.
Buffy; "Mom had an accident"
Dawn; (her voice faltering, dreading what is to come) " Is...is she ok?"
Buffy; (tears in her eyes) "NO...!"
Imagine you're 14 years old and the mother you love more than anything has died. Wouldn't you do ANYTHING to bring her back?

Forever.
Dawn; "I'm not like you, I don't have ANYONE!"
Buffy; (slaps her) "Dawnie, I didn't mean to shut you out. But if I don't do this who will?"
Dawn; "You don't have to be mom!"
Buffy' "If I'm not who will be? Who's going to take care of US?"
(The THING Dawn has conjured from Joyce's grave knocks upon their door)
Buffy; "Mom? Mommy?" (runs to the door, for she would give the WORLD to have Joyce back)
Dawn realises what she's done and tears up Joyces photo. Buffy opens the door to nothing)
Buffy; "DAWNIE!" (the superhero Slayer collapses weeping into Dawn's arms)
Dawn; "IT'S OKAY! OKKKKAAAAYYYYY!"

And I fell in love with Dawn in just that second!

Actually, I just watched those episodes 2 days ago and my love for Dawn grew because of those same moments. I never overly cared for her character but I think she went through a lot more than what we recognize. I even had way more sympathy for her when she cut herself and yelled a ther family in her room; I didn't find it annoying at all like I used to. Or how about when she calls herself dangerous in Tough Love because of what happened to Tara?

Yeah, I loved when Dawn cancelled the spell, I loved that she understood it was wrong to bring Joyce back like that!
 
I love her so much in Season 7 when she is all understated and in the background, she is still needy and insecure but seems to have turned that into being a people pleaser. I just feel so sorry for her, I would have liked to have seen her have her own happy ending but I suppose she was just too young.
 
Funny because Forever made me hate her more, lol. It's cool she broke the spell but the way she acted before just doesn't excuse that. She was being selfish and then had the audacity to tell Buffy that she doesn't care about her own mother dying.

Anyways, I should probably stay out of threads like these because Dawn does nothing but make my blood boil 😛

Yup, that bugged me too. Actually, that's the worst Dawn moment for me, when she said that too Buffy..

Again, imagine you're 14 and there was the remotest chance you could bring Joyce back? Some loves are beyond all reason as Buffy saying 'Mommy' and running to the door illustrates. Note that Dawn need's Buffy more than anything in this time but Buffy cuts herself off from her, busies herself with the minutiae of the funeral, never hugs her, can't even look her in the face. Can't bear to see Joyce's eyes looking back at her?
In 'Passion' Angelus speaks off the 'ecstasy of grief'. Here we see it in all it's glory. Buffy and Dawn have the greatest love in the entire Buffyverse, they forgive each other all their faults and failings

She's not the only 14 year old kid who lost a mother. And you don't see rest of them googleing about spells how to bring them back. Tara told her it is dangerous and not something she should be paying with.

Yes, it's sad she lost a mother. But Buffy did too. Dawn was old enough to understand in, and to be honest, Buffy wasn't that much older then her.

The thing is, she haven't listened, and she only made the situation more difficult. For Buffy, and for herself.

I am pretty sure I would make absolutely certain it's a zombie and not actually my mother before tearing up that photo, I can tell you that. [/nitcpick] 🙂

I don't dislike Dawn but the character's suffering alone isn't enough to make them like them. And with Dawn and Buffy in particular the suffering heaped on them actually achieved the opposite effect - it was an overkill. Oh, look at poor Dawnie - she found out she isn't real, her mom died, her sister died, Tara left, Willow became a crack-addict, then Tara died and Willow tried to kill Dawn. All in a space of less than a year and a half. It was too much, IMO. At some point I just stopped giving a damn. I suspect the writers felt that way too because S7 Dawn is nowhere near as depressed as before, not that this development made any sense, mind you.

So do Buffy and Angel, Buffy and Willow, Xander and Willow, Tara and Willow, Buffy and Giles, etc. For me Buffy-Dawn is too much telling and too little showing, so I am nowhere near as invested in it than in the bonds between the Core Four who relied on showing, not telling, at least in the early seasons.

Very true, they didn't show it at all (even the dying was telling rather than showing). That made me like Dawn more though.
 
Great, I just read those two moments...I only READ them and now I'm crying. Forever and The Body are my two totally tear-worthy episodes. Especially that second scene, wow. I love Dawn, I always have.

I agree with the OP - those are great episodes and great Dawn moments where you get to really see her growing as a character.

That said - I don't love Dawn for it. I also don't hate her. I think I'm one of the few people who don't have a super passionate opinion about Dawn.
 
The moment that made me like Dawn was in Afterlife when everyone was crowding Buffy, and Dawn told everyone to back off.

Then she downgraded from there a bit with the constant whining about Buffy who was deep in depression.

Then I liked her again when after they caught Anya/Spike on webcam and they had a heart to heart. She leveled with Buffy then.

Same. She's not super interesting, but I don't hate her for.
 
See, I never didn't like Dawn. Except maybe in Older and Far Away because she was just painful but even then...Why don't I hate her? Because I relate to her. I know exactly what it's like to be a girl of her age. When I started watching Buffy I had just turned fifteen and I just totally understand her. Teenagers really do have those tanterums and feel that stuff, even me. I have abandonment issues lately because my parents just bought a buisness and are barely around anymore. I'm in the house alone a lot and it kind of begins to take it's toll on you. And her problems were much more serious.

I can kind of understand why people don't like her. She can be very annoying but I respect her and understand her. I think she's cool and wouldn't mind having her as a friend. Plus, I have a friend who's a lot like Dawn. 😀
 
Oh I wouldn't be friend's with Dawn lol. Girls like that are like bi-polar, they're always really up or really low. It gets old real quick.
