Question Why no Spike in Season 3?

There was so much chaos with Faith, the mayor, Angel coming back, The first trying to get Angel to kill Buffy, Faith shooting Angel with the poisonous arrow, etc.. Season 3 was already action packed. The episode in which Spike appeared was enough to have him involved in the season but anything more would have been overkill.

My question is.. why the hell is he on the last s3 dvd? (Region 1) The only appearance he made in s3 was Lover's Walk. haha.

They needed a sexy face, and the Mayor just wouldn't do. ^_^ Besides, all Spike has to do is show up for one episode and it makes the show 10x better.

I think I agree with the majority of the comments here. Spike didn't really fit well into the season with the exception of Lover's Walk. Plus, I think he left in season2 to hide out for a while after the truce with Buffy.

I think Joss saw how popular Spike's character was. He almost killed him off (remind me at which episode?).
Joss wanted to let James know personally, so he called him and James literally jumped up and down with joy. Cutie! (I'm imagining his jumping up and down in my head).

Same with Emma's Anya. She wasn't supposed to be back and become a regular, but the fans loved her.

Anyway, that's what I've heard.

That's what I heard too, they were going to make cordy into a bigger role but of course she went off to LA too.

However, Joss thought that Spike had a lot of potential and James had already made the part completely his own so they decided to big his character up after Angel left to give another strong male character.

I love Spike, but personally, I am glad he wasn't around for most of Season 3. I love that season so much because it's the last year we get the high school dynamics with the Scooby Gang, and I love that season focuses mostly on them and their relationships with each other. I love him being there for "Lover's Walk", but I agree with everyone else who's said that there was already so much other stuff going on that having Spike there would have made the season too busy, such as the way the Potentials made Season 7 too busy.

This.

No Spike in S3 was the right decision, it avoided exactly the troubles S7 ran into with being overcluttered with extras and plotlines.

But in season 4 Spike lost some of his edge with that chip in his head...but I guess that wasn't his fault.

Stupid Initiative.

If I remember rightly they wanted both Spike and Drusilla back in season 3 but Juliet wasn't available, so they just brought back Spike.

I agree Spike a regular in s3 would be a bit much. Angel was Buffys romance for 3 seasons, but Spike get to flirt with Buffy for 4 seasons (s4-s7), so sometimes i wonder if Spike didn't get the better deal 🙂
