I think it would be an immeasurably cruel thing to do to rip souls from their resting place and stuff them back into their former bodies where they now remember killing and maiming, probably for centuries.

A vampire is nothing but demon + memories of the host bodies' life. Let the soul rest and just kill the bloody demon.
I completely agree with the sentiment, and the mostly Giles-based canon holds to that. Nevertheless, from what we've seen, the human soul doesn't "pass on" until their vampire-infested body dies too.
Buffy was dead for a few months, yet vaguely remembers "heaven." Liam & William were dead for ages, yet never mention any memory of an afterlife...
