I don't think that there has ever been a thread devoted to this, and I was just wondering...

Why do the same fans that absolutely adored Willow and Tara together disapprove of Batsu so much? I mean, obviously, one became a long term relationship, while the other lasted for only a two night stand, but it COULD have developed into something. One relationship was adored, the other was panned as a gimmick and attention getter. In your opinion, why?

Well you could equally ask why I adored Bangel and not Spuffy? Both are relationships between a man and a woman.

I'm not sure why liking Twillow would have anything to do with liking Batsu. Their only uniting factor is that they are both lesbian relationships.

Personally, I was never much of a fan of Twillow but I really liked Batsu. I definitely think they could had someting more than two nights together.

Miss K, you never fail to amaze me. In the most pleasent way imaginable.
I honestly don't get it either. I don't have anything against Buffy/Satsu, in fact, it makes complete sense in-story. Buffy was lonely, she needed someone to blow off some steam with and was in a castle in the middle of nowhere with dozens of other girls, her sister and her best friends, only one of whom was male. So what was she supposed to do? Ruin a perfectly good friendship with casual sex? Great idea. And Satsu was openly interested in her, so it's really not that far a stretch.

If it had developed into more than that, though, I'm not sure. I think it worked the way it was.

Though the comparison isn't really all that great. They're very different characters and situations.

Because Satsu isn't Faith.

All kidding aside, Willow was in college, which is typically a time of experimentation. And isn't Buffy going on 30 this year?

Pretty much.
Not that I personally give a fig about Batsu, one way or the other, but I do suspect the reasons are two - shipping Buffy with someone else and being natually inclined against Buffy sleeping with anyobody who isn't this "somebody", and the lack of set up. Love it or hate it, Willow/Tara had plenty of setup, despite the network's restrictions on showing lesbian relationships. Had Willow picked a random girl out of the blue, slept with her and then went back to pining after men, I am quite certain the reaction would have been quite similar to that caused of Buffy/Satsu. There also seems to be a certain portion of the fandom which is rather annoyed that Joss has quite a few lesbian/bisexual female characters and not a single gay male in his shows.

Yep. Or at least -openly- gay males.
I really like Satsu and thought she was a great addition to the Buffy- Verse. I think it worked the way it was - love that wasn't reciprocated. She liked Buffy and Buffy liked that she liked Buffy 😀. It added a sadness to her character but the way the season turned out, I was feeling she could do a hell of a lot better than Buffy anyway. I hope to see more of her, I just don't think it was ever going to be a Twillow situation. It wasn't a mutual love and I don't think it was ever going to grow into that. To be honest, Buffy just wanted to get laid and Satsu wanted a girlfriend.

Not really. At the most Buffy will be turning 26. It isn't 2011 in the comics, it's more like 2006/7. When she slept with Satsu she would have been 24/25.

And even still, I'd hate to think that the only acceptable time to explore ones sexuality is in college.

But Willow's 'experimenting' turned into a full blown lifestyle change. She didn't revert back to the boys after a few nights with Tara, which is what Buffy did.

Buffy's nights with Satsu was more experimenting, but I don't think she was conscious of that. Like Rik said, she was in the middle of nowhere, surrounding by hundreds of girls. She did the best she could in that situation.

Another part of me believes that Buffy's 'relationship' with Satsu was just giving the fans what the writers thought we wanted - Buffy to have a relationship with a fellow Slayer. They don't get that we don't mean any Slayer. It's just not the same if it's not Faith, lol.

But Kean's right. You can't compare the two relationships, they have nothing in common other than the fact they were lesbian relationships. Some people are Spuffies, some are Bangels, nobody is a Briley, lol, it just depends on how the relationship is written, and I honestly don't think Batsu was written all that well.

I met a Briley once. A long time ago. I'm told that there are still a few out there, but they're way down on the "endangered species" list. Sad, too. They were kinda cute, and totally harmless.

No, but it makes it more plausible if done before 30. And a lot of people find Willow's exploration forced as it is.

What makes thirty such a magical treshold?
Because after all, I didn't feel Buffy is supposed to be with a woman. I don't adore Tillow, but I accept it.. it just came along the way and became acceptable.

My friend was in his mid-thirties before he fell for his now-husband. Being older doesn't mean you can't question your sexual identity.

And, again, I don't see Willow's relationship with Tara was experimentation. She fell for someone who just happened to be the same sex as she was. It's happened many times.

I was just going off statistics. And since Willow had never fallen for a woman before, I'd argue it was experimentation. Isn't that usually how those things get started - an attraction?

I really liked it. I thought they built up the bond between Buffy and Satsu very well and very subtly. Their was acres of trust between Buffy and Satsu at the time they started sleeping together. It was certainly a better experience for Buffy than for Satsu but I think she was very honest with Satsu in terms of where her head was at and what their nights together meant to her. I don't think she led her on. Buffy told Satsu that she wasn't gay and Satsu told her she knew that and she still pursued Buffy. I think Satsu probably thought if she showed Buffy how much she cared and how "Wow" inducing she could be that maybe Buffy would reconsider her "Not Gay" stance. That was pretty naive but you can't blame a girl for trying (sw).

Oh boy, I don't even know where to start. As The Unspoken pointed out, They were all in college when Willow had a chance to experiment and what not. Willow and Tara's relationship was perfectly set up. From friendship to finally realizing they dig each other. Batsu, not so much. Buffy was lonely. She couldn't have a man. All the men she dated ended up getting hurt. No matter how strong they were. With Satsu, well she figured, oh she's a slayer, she can protect herself. I gotta admit, them sleeping together was kinda hot, but I knew Buffy wouldn't continue from there. It just wasn't meant to be. There was no real connection. I mean Buffy was just lonely.

I mean come on. If I was lonely and I hadn't been getting any, and a guy liked me, I'd sleep with him....

karma for the last line, alone. gross, indeed! :)

I don't think Willow/Tara should count as "college experimentation". It's not as if Willow planned for it to happen and went looking for a girl to sleep with. As she says "it just happened". It's Tara who initiates just about everything in that relationship. Willow is very romantic and she fell in love with someone who just happened to be a woman. Knowing Willow's boundless curiosity, had she really wanted to experiment she would have tried to sleep with more women to get a better statistical sample. Okay, okay, I am just kidding. 😀

I still hold out hope for more Batsu in season 9.

Because I am a sucker who wants the unattainable. 🙁

I'm glad Satsu lived through season 8. Now if they can just avoid throwing her together with Kennedy because, "Hey, they're both lesbians, right?"

See, I just don't see it as anything more than the bond between two warriors. Like Buffy had with Kendra. Faith is a whole different story, lol.

Yes, Buffy was honest about what she did or didn't want, but to me, the whole concept of them sleeping together felt really pushed and forced - not natural like Willow and Tara.

Willow and Tara's relationship built up over time. They started as friends, became closer until they realized there was something more between them. Which is why I don't think it was experimenting on Willow's part. If it was, she would have jumped right into bed with Tara. That, and after Tara, Willow considered herself to be gay. If it was experimenting, she would at least refer to herself as bi.

Buffy and Satsu's relationship started out as teacher and student, leader and follower, which to me is just unhealthy and sort of sets Satsu up for a world of hurt. Even if Buffy was honest about her feelings from the start, Satsu was still affected enough that she chose to stay behind in Japan to put some distance between them in order for her to get over Buffy. Whereas Buffy wasn't affected at all and simply reverted back to thinking of Satsu as nothing more than a friend/ally.

Imagine if Xander or Riley had slept with a subordinate then broken with them. The Internet would have exploded...😀

I don't get it....
I'm not so big on Tillow, I like them but I prefer Woz. The thing about Batsu is...well, it seemed just OOC for Buffy to sleep with a woman just like that, I'd never pictured it since the character I've come to known in seven years would have never done that. Aside from this, Tara and Willow had a sweet relationship, it was love. Batsu is all about two-nights stands and as zobo said wanting some action...or the writers wanted some action.
