This is what I wondered..I know the whole attempted rape thing was horrible..I love Buffy and everything..but she was so horrible to him..he loved her...so much and she treated him so bad..honestly I found it hard too watch certain scenes..or episodes..especially "fool for love"..why did she treat him so bad? Was it because he saw how she truly was? That she saw parts of herself in him, what was it? And why did he love her so much?

She treated him bad because he was still a vampire! He didn't have a soul like Angel he didn't feel remorse for what he had done, as it was said he was a vicious killer but with a muzzle, but still a vicious killer!

I think she just didn't want love of any kinda, going with Angel's "soulless vampires can't love" statement she tried to convince herself that while he lacked a soul. Tried to convince herself that he WAS nothing, it made it easier for her to treat him like that.

I don't think she's "a bad person deep down" but she was a bad person to spike.

And why did he love her so much?
because he was STUPID... hah, I'm kidding. He loved her because she treated him in the beginning like he was a person, a man, even though he was a vampire.

That doesn't give anybody a right to do wrong to them.

I think she was so cruel to Spike because she identified with him more than anybody else around her at the time.

What she saw in Spike she saw in herself, so she took it out on him.

As for why he loved her, I agree with FahrbotDrusilla, she treated him like a man.

When she started using him, his head got too ****ed-up to understand her actions.

After that, when he got his soul, he just wanted to be a good man. He saw Buffy as a way to being that good man. Helping her, being there for her when she needed him.

I agree that Buffy felt Spike was the only person she could relate to and treated him badly because she saw a part of herself in him
yeah because Spike was a vampire... but it doesnt explain why she was cruel to him... cos Angel was a vampire too..... and also the fact she used him to feel after she was raised from the dead 😀

What Buffy did to Spike in the middle part of Season 6 looked mighty like teasing to me. Yes, I did see cruelty in the way she acted. She kisses him at the end of OMWF. Then at the very beginning of "Tabula Rasa" she just walks away and won't even stop to talk to him. It gets even worse in the next several episodes. Really, she has sex with him, more than once and then tells him to get lost.

I know it was all tied to her disorientation at being back from the dead and not able to feel. She herself can't comprehend what she's doing, as she tells Tara in "Dead Things". Spike may still be soul-less and evil, and nothing justifies his attempted rape. But what Buffy did leading up to that episode was to USE him.

Buffy really wasn't the same after she died she came back.

in season 6 Buffy was cruel to Spike as she just used him and i spose you can use the excuse that she was just trying to understand everything again after she was brought back and yea that is a good reason, but after a while of her sleeping with him then telling him to get lost i kind of felt sorry for him cos he really liked her, well as much as a vampire can like someone.she did realise what she was doing to him and she stopped seeing him which was good, for the both of them.but then Spike tried to rape her and well that kind of put me off Spike and he kind of deserved what he got after that.

i can understand why buffy started to treat him differently after he got a soul because he was more like her and he actually meant something.in season 7 spike was a decent guy and he was trying to make up for things and i think Buffy treated him decently and the way he should of been treated.

but back to how she treated him in season 6, she treated him like he was nothing, and i dont know if that was because she saw herself in him and felt like she should be treated that way because she was sleeping with a vampire without a soul, but either way she was pretty mean to Spike in season 6.

Well, and also maybe because she just didn't want to admit the feelings that she was having. It's easier to be mean than to admit that you are experiencing feelings (especially if it's with someone you know others will despise)

That's true..I mean she wasn't like that with anyone else..so maybe she did see something in her that she saw in him..she was dead emotionally

I think the key word is "soul". spike didn't have one. did you notice that in the minute Buffy found out spike had a soul, she treated him differently? she no longer sees him as "an evil disgusting thing". The soul changed the whole picture.

Why did spike love her? well, that's a good question. seriously, a good question, I don't know. The first time he saw her he loved her, just didn't know that yet. maybe because they both could relate to each other. Or maybe just because she looked pretty. Don't know... I'm asking myself the same question.

Remember though that Spike's "crush" on Buffy dates at least from Season 5 before her death, for that matter quite possibly before that season.

Why she couples with him after she comes back is controversial. I was intrigued with the scene early in Season 6, in "Afterlife" where she says she needs to be alone and that she can be "alone" with Spike there. That's when she tells him where she was after her death. There was some bond there, definitely. It was later in the season when that "bond" turned ugly.

I saw this plotline as a corollory to the "Angel/Angelus" plotline of S2. You know, the "young girl gives it up and the guy changes to a creep" aspect of S2. In a lot of ways, the Spike/Buffy storyline is about why a girl would date/stay with a "bad boy". She knows he's evil, even though he is currently no threat to her. Buffy has been pulled out of heaven. She believes on some level that she deserved to be pulled out, and she hates the world, her life, and herself. I think in a lot of ways she is punishing herself, like she is not worthy to be with anyone BUT a bad guy. Yes, she was using him, but IMO she didn't think she deserved better. As she realized what she was doing, she broke up with Spike, who had fallen for her hard (pun). As she got better, she realized she was both using Spike and hurting herself. And we then see the common real-life situation where a spurned "bad boy" won't take "no" for an answer...eventually the bad boy turns on his "love" object.

Buffy was nasty to Spike, because deep down she hated herself. She took it out on him while using him to fulfil her self-induced debasement.

she hated herself and she took it all out on him the person she was sure that wouldn't treat her the way she did, can you imagine what would've happened if she treated Willow or Dawn the way she treated Spike? No she wouldn't

Buffy was cruel to Spike because she was a Slayer and he was a pathetic vampire at the time. He treated her respectfully and she just used him to feel in her time of need. The character of Buffy can be a really big b**** sometimes...but hey, aren't Slayer aloud to be moody?

buffy was obviously just confused. she didn't really love spike like she loved angel, i think that was made clear. she knew what they were doing was wrong & she felt it was wrong so she ended it. but i think she really did care about him & love him, just not like she did angel. i think by the end of season 7 buffy finally realised that spike really did love her, enough to save the world & her.

she just wanted to feel.. se didn't have any feelings for him... but there were an atraction. she never did that scenes.. not even with riley or angel :S buffy was confused
