Will Fox release Buffy on Blu-ray for its 20th anniversary?

Please please please. It would seem like the perfect time. I'm hoping they were holding on to it for 2017. What do you guys think?

I'd prefer Angel on Blu-ray to be honest, but baby steps first.

I would absolutely love to have Buffy and Angel blu rays. Unfortunately having read up on it a little bit I'm not convinced we'll get them. Too much work involved. I'd also be worried about getting a shoddy product if they do release them because of corner cutting instead of doing the work.

I ken about the problems, they are varied and many. I do think it could be an investment for them though. The fact that the show is still alive and relevant 20 years later has to count for something.

It's not really about an investment, its about the ability to do it, and they do not have it based on how Buffy was filmed.

I think the only feasible way of doing it would be by leaving some parts in SD, effects and such. Which would contrast quite a bit with the rest. I think one of the other problems is the debate over which version would be released, 16:9 or 4:3. I don't think there's a consensus among fans over which version is the definitive one.

I don't know about fans but Joss and everyone else involved who has ever been asked about it have said that the show was shot 4:3 and should stay that way. That's definitive enough for my liking.

Oh definitely. I want to watch something in the format it was intended to be seen. The only reason I have a multi-region dvd player is for the 4:3 version of the show. In my experience, even on the boards, a lot of people prefer the widescreen Buffy which was broadcast in the UK and is on the European and Australian DVDs. It may divide people!

It probably will. Those of us who want to see it done properly should lock Joss and his helpers in a room at Fox until it's been lovingly made into fantastic blu rays (preferably steelbooks). 🙂

Everyone else who thinks they have a better handle on how the show should have been framed can go nuts editing it however they feel like, why stop at 16:9? We've got 21:9 screens available now so we can get loads of extra side shots included!

Yeah they've released that already. No comment on the quality though because I didn't like it enough first time round to watch it again.

The biggest problem with the current quality/format is that it doesn't play well on flat screen tvs. You either have to watch on half the screen or change the dvd/tv settings to 16:9 full screen. I usually use the later.

No it should all be 4:3. The European DVD release decided to make the later seasons wide-screen but that's not how they were originally shot.

Oh no, so the european S4-7 DVDs are mutilated versions!?! Thats annoying. And on top of this, the US DVDs are region lock R1..? 🙁

Unfortunately that's right. I've been doing my latest re-watch using the American Netflix.

Once again I give credit to Joss for sticking to his guns. Buffy is an interesting show in that reguard. Much of the shooting style is in the mould of old school television, yet there are also progressive cinematic elements as the show moves along and certainly the season long arc style we now see so much was a big part of the show. I think they got a good middle ground.

If you can still find it, I believe The Chosen Collection on DVD is the best version of the show out there. Even in terms of extras, as there's more on this release than the standard European set. You get the show as it was originally intended to be seen, even with a letter from Joss telling you this. There are great programs for region free viewing on your pc/laptop. I generally use my laptop with it connected to the tv via HDMI if I'm watching a region 1 release, and use a remote control app on my phone for ultimate laziness.
 
It seems to be still available to import. 😀 I would highly recommend buying this 40-disc set as opposed to the standard 39-disc, as it has a tendency to disappear.
