Will I Ever Find Another Show I Love Like I Love Buffy?

I try to stick by "theres nothing like buffy" and i guess there aint

but i LOVE so many shows esp Battlestar Galactica at the moment, each new episode makes me cry.... does anyone know why? I'm really not sure.

I am ONLY up to the end of season 3 BUT I think its because you are consistently sucker-punched!

What I love about BSG is that while its a Sci-Fi it doesn't follow the usual conventions of Sci-Fi long running shows, for instance the 'body swap' episode that is inevitable in most others.

Its realistic Science Fiction.

Thats VERY true!!

I've started timing how long it take for me to well up... it used to be at the end of each ep, this empty big black hole feeling of dispair i got... but now the slightest thing on the show just makes me spiral.

Its a fantastic series as a whole.

I love Buffy mainly because its finished and I watched its entire run in a very short space of time (obviously because its so good). Wheras most other shows that I watch are actually still on the air. I'll stick to US shows since very few UK shows draw me in even remotely (a fact I wish wasn't true)

Rivals:
I have a sort of guilty pleasure with 'Friends' which sortof rivals Buffy in its ability for me to rewatch it. Because its a 10 year run, there are so many ups and downs and brilliant episodes, I love a great story.. a LONG story and thats why these shows are a fascination to me. Friends is one of those shows where your really see the characters grow and the comedy and relationships supplement their growth.

Once Smallville finishes and I by the 'S' Blu-ray collection or whatever they come up with, I dare say I may call myself a bigger Smallville fan than Buffy. Ive been watching the show for years now and yea, its draggin on in places, but the STORY is what I care about and it is progressing. There are still awesome episodes and great development of all the characters, plus the Superman legacy to go along with it.

Firefly is also very rewatchable, and in HD so it scores bonus points.

Great but only the once
There are other TV shows out there, that I enjoy, but dont really have any desire to re-watch. So I would consider them great entertainment, but really not a great story that I want to continually immerse myself in. These shows include 24, Prison Break, House, Bones, Greys.

Close Rivals but only time will tell

Lost- How people continue to watch this show amazes me. They treat the audience like total morons who will stick around no matter how obsurd or how many 'twists' you throw at them. This went from being one of my favourite show to a show I despise.

Gossip Girl- This is one of those shows the CW put a crap load of money into marketing so i checked it out. I realize im the wrong demo for this type of show (incidently, that makes half the population) but the show revolves around sex and couples with daytime drama thrown in instead of a story, which obviously works for 16 year old girls but I cant imagine many people watching this over-and-over after 10 years.

You know thinking about what Silum wrote made me ponder... do you really "get into" a show when you buy all the dvds or whatever and watch it all pretty much at once... or is it only possible to have that total passion for the show if your watching it every week, tentatively following the story, guessing whats gonna be next, over anylising and fandoming it....?

Or do you catch up with all the love and fandoming a show once you've watched it all really quickly.

Personally i LOVE watching boxsets and lots at once, but i also love watching weekly, totally diein' for the next ep to see whats next.

I can accept that you don't like the show, but I don't think it's fair to say they treat their audience like morons. If anything, I find this is a show that expects their audience not to be morons. They don't spoon-feed you the answers to every question but they do slowly and regularly explain things. It definitely takes patience and reading between the lines sometimes. And there has been and continues to be recurring themes and character-driven episodes throughout the series.

Look, it's hard not to argue that a show about a crazy island with monsters, polar bears, and healing properties isn't obsurd. But considering it is a science fiction show, I don't see that it's twists are really anymore obsurd than the twists of 24 (which I also love, by the way), which is not supposed to be science fiction. That show has people getting shot and returning to work a few hours later, moles occupying every government agency repeatedly, three hour bouts with amnesia and girls getting caught in cougar traps, terrorist cells with a seemingly unending supply of buildings to escape to when Jack tracks them down, etc.

Although Buffy/Angel are clearly my favourite shows there are some other shows I can really also watch tons of times.

Friends: This show is sort of a legend for me and my brother. I started it when I was 13 and I just have so many memories with it. This show was what got me into studying hard for English. Before it was really one of my weakest subjects at school and I could harldy form a sentence. Then when started watching Friends a friend of mine had the latest seasons that hadn't been aired in Germany in English from the internet, which she gave to me. At the beginning I harldy understood anything, but with time I got it more and more (and now I have no problems whatsoever with understanding what they're talking about). Alone for that Friends deserves a special place in my heart. And then there's the fact that my brother and I used to watch at least 1 episode per evening over years. It was like a ritual, or ore even a drug, every evening before we went to sleep we sat down and watched an episode. Whenever we talked we made so many Friends references (in English! It was always weird, those English sentences mixed in with out German, lol). The only problem with this show now is that I've seen it so often, every episode like at least 5 times, all the jokes are old and it's not that enjoyable again. I don't have that (yet?) with Buffy.

Then there's How I Met Your Mother. I think it's just SO hilarious and it's sort of the new sitcom for my brother and me (and a lot of my roommates, for that matter). Of course I don't see my brother a lot these days (mostly ue to the fact that we live in different countries now), but whenever we talk we always discuss the latest HIMYM episode and usually compare it with Friends. So I say, the show's got potential. BUT, it's far from over yet, so I guess only time can tell if this show can matc up to Buffy.

And of course now there is Dollhouse, which looks very promising so far, BUT, again, it's way too early to really make any judgements about it.

I agree. I tried to stay away from sitcoms in my post since their not really anywhere close to buffy but there are a ton of good sitcoms right now that I love are just as funny/interesting as friends.

How I met your mother, Gary Unmarried (i love this show), The Office, and The big bang theory all deserve a mention.

It's true that this is a show that's full of sex and couples. I'd be lying if I said that the CW didn't set out to market it as that. It should have been pretty obvious from their controversial OMFG campaign that this is definitely a show about sex, sex, and sex. I will admit that the first 6 episodes are quite boring and would make people who hadn't read the books be drawn away from it. (The 2nd and 3rd weren't that bad, though) Heck, I stayed away from it at first because I really didn't like the books, even though I'd read them all at Deli's request and persuasion. But after watching the Michelle Trachtenberg episodes I was slightly interested, and then intrigued when people kept on saying that it was surprisingly good. But if it's not your piece of art, that's completely fine. 😉 We're all entitled to our own opinion on what makes a show our favorite.

Folks are always doin' stuff like that in limos in the movies and tv. How does the limo driver keep from having A wreck? You just KNOW he's gonna look.

Ah, but they didn't just perform at a strip club by a dare set by the other person and then proceed to lose their virginity in the back of the limo, did they? 😉 And don't worry, the limo driver is probably used to it by now. Chuck Bass is Chuck Bass, after all. I'd be surprised if his staff weren't used to his womanizing ways.

Now see here, this is what makes them classic: the "something fluttering in my stomach." "butterflies?", the shoulder kiss, the "3 words. 8 letters.", the "you don't appreciate anything today but I don't care", when he looks at her and she doesn't have to say anything, just runs to him and lets cry and him fall asleep, when she stops him from jumping off of the building, etc. They are classic Hollywood and that's why they were in all of the lists of the magazines last year as one of the best and hottest couples on TV.

I think the apparent different tastes in other television shows on these boards lends further proof to the fact that BtVS is BRILLIANT. It's interesting and fun to learn that shows that some here love, others despise.

I feel like Buffy caters to a very unique, very specific audience member, and if you are a true fan like we are, than you are a part of that selective audience.

However, we're like a giant Venn diagram, where that part of us that draws us all to Buffy is the overlapping factor. Hmmm... now I kind of want to gather data on what shows everyone likes and create an actual Venn diagram... but alas... I am a lazy creature.

buffy is something really special, and I can't imagine I will ever find a show that comes close to it. Of course there are other really good shows and many I really like but it is just that I grow up with watching Buffy, I see how she has changed in the whole seven seasons and I can feel how I have changed in this time.

I've been trying to figure this out. Up until this fall when i revisted Buffy for the first time since "Chosen" aired. I forgot how involved i was with this show back in HS and that it was my favorite show. You can read that whole story in my first post in the 12th anniversery thread. There are only 2 shows that i have been obcessive about other than buffy.

Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis): best sci-fi show out there fun, action, epic arcs, and great lore(like buffy)

SCrubs : Best comedy on TV, its smart, has a great core cast, good character drama that blends well with the witty humor.

and two honorable mentions.

24 :jsut a huge fan of that show love the box sets, show was made for DVD lol.

Heros: its had its ups and downs but i still can't miss it.

There are other shows I absolutely love: Friends, Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory, The New Adventures of Old Christine, 24, The Sopranos....etc, but I have never been so connected to a show like I was with Buffy. It's sounds nutty, but I felt almost if I knew the Scoobies. It was more than a tv show...it was almost a part of life.
