Is it just me, or did anyone else get ticked off by the way Whedon used Wicca in Buffy? I mean, first of all, someone is a Wiccan not a Wicca, as they so often called it. Secondly, there is no black magic to Wicca. There is no Satan, no inverted pentacles, no veins and dark roots. It is all good natured and Earth loving. I know that it is sort of a trivial subject, but you would think that because Wicca is classified as a legit religion, they'd have written it as good as possible.
 
I guess Joss just converted Wicca to his needs for it to be more spectacular...But not calling someone Wiccan kinda always annoyed me..
 
This is true, there are no dark veins, or tats, or frosted eyes. But there is deffinetely dark magic. It is magic that hurts someone or something. Wiccans do not believe in hurting nature or others. But they did follow the gods well. I liked that! And as far as the physical changes, think about it, if she would have looked the same, it would not have gotten as well of a response from viewers. And they were willing to disatisfy a few, to please millions!
 
Well, from all of the different texts I ave read and such, I have found that sometimes one who practices Wiacca can also be refered to as a Wicca... Although this is reserved for thoes who practice magic, as not all wiccans do.

As for black magic, some magic is not good, sometimes it is used for negative puroses... The buffyverse never said that wicca utalized black magic.

And as Willow progressed, I thought that they did a good job of illustrating that anything she was doing was well beyond the teachings of wicca... She was simply using the forces of the things around her weather they be for good or negative purposes.
 
When Willow was searching for Johnathon and Andrew, Anya called her the "most powerful Wicca in the Western hemishpere." I interpreted that as saying Wicca uses black magic.

I would have been fine with Dark Willow, and the spectacle of her veiny-ness. I mean, I loved her. But why did they need to call it Wicca? Did they need that one little bit? They could have just kept saying 'magick' or 'witchcraft.' But using the actual religion?

While they implie that Willow is wiccan, they never say that all wiccans use black magic.... As they story arc progresses, it is made clear that all magic simply exists, and that it is the one who practices it who decides how it is used and for what purpose.
 
It is weird how they refer to witchs on the show as wiccan, but same with Charmed. I think they did sepearate real life wiccans with the shows when Willow had the "Wanna belsséd-be" meeting, but it did make wiccans seem like ditzy girls.

The term magics always annoyed me, I just dont think it should be pluralised.
 
I dont think that made Wiccans seem like Ditzy Girls, it just showed people useing the name wrongly.
 
I think Joss does respect the religion but he is maybe just showing it in a way that will interest viewers. It isn't just Wicca that he..played around with. Remember the quote from WTTH
Giles: 'Contrary to popular mythology, the world did not begin as a paradise.'
Now if that isn't mocking Christianity, I don't know what is lol

Good point. I remember him talking about that on a commentary. I think he even was expecting controversy.

I know. They used that a lot in the Dark Willow stage.

This always annoyed me..and how he could never seperate Wicca, a religion that in no way involves black magick, from withcraft, which can possibly use dark magick...also annoyed me...
 
Lets remember, that Willow was mainly refered to as Wicca, or Wiccan in Season 3/4/5, not 6 when she was all with the dark mojo.
I thought of her as a Witch then, not Wicca, or Wiccan...
 
Me also but my question is when people who have no idea bout Wicca,Witchcraft,Magick or whatever name you put here knew she was not a Wiccan when killing people??

I went with that she was using dark magick, in no way relating to her being a Wiccan. It just annoyed me how they continued to call her a Wicca when she went all....dark.

Although I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to the religion, because my mom thinks it's a load of crap. As much as I try to convince her that its a legitimate religion, she won't give in. So I don't get to learn as much about it as I would like.
 
Conceiveably, couldn't someone be a Wiccan practitioner, and go evil? I mean, they're not a very good Wiccan in that case, but it's possible.

I didn't get an anti-Wicca vibe from that whole storyline - I don't think there was any intent to defame Wicca iteself 🙂

I think that maybe this is the whole point of it. Willow initially started out respecting wicca and the magic therin. Maybe when she started abusing the use of magic and abandoned the religious aspects of it it was because she was in a bad place and lost her faith?
 
I understand what you're saying and partially agree. Initally (seasons 2, 3 and maybe 4) she was all about the benefits of magic and using it correctly and for non-gainful or selfish reasons. Being that it was, infact, a TV show, I don't think that they could have gotten away with too much of the religious side of it... However, they showed respect for it... But then she abandoned that and went to "the dark place". What she was practicing was not wicca, but eventually she went back to respecting magic and all that was associated with it, realizing that it was not to be taken lightly, insted respecting and valuing it.
 
Very true..But I showed just Darth Willow eps to one of my friends and she immediately said that she have seen Wiccan..I've read a few articles where Wiccans were not happy with theway Joss portrayed Willow..Willow was a Wiccan most of the show,but when she turned to Black Magick at least IMO she was only a Witch then...
