Would a Major characters Death Matter?

Would the death of a major character have spoiled the show for you that much?
I think, apart from Buffy, Btvs could easily have killed off a major character and stayed just as strong.
For example, If some of my favorite characters like Angel(s2) and Spike(s4), were to have been killed, and stayed killed, or maybe Faith in Angel s1(five by five), altough i love these characters, the show could easily have survived, and the show may have been better for it.
But then, as much as i love them, Dawn, Drusilla, Reilly etc, could have been anybody, overall, they definetly were not that important.
Only buffy ithink was un-expendable.
 
They killed Tara, who I definately saw as a major character, and I still liked it. So yeah. But one of the core Scoobies? Possibly in Chosen, but otherwise it would have completely thrown the balance of the show. Giles left, but he was always still there, you know?
 
Yeah, the show would be able to survive. I'd sure be upset about it but like a lot of people, you learn to trust Joss and not question what he does because in the end its all good.
 
i think it would matter just think if ur favorite character got killed off would u wanna watch it as much...
its the same thing with every buffyverse relationship they never work out because itd alienate viewers who liked a different relationship

im with five by five on this, i love tara but it had to happen, plus i love dark willow... (just finished watching villains, two to go and grave as a matter of some sorta fact)

i didn't like the idea of killing Xander off at the end of season 7, glad he just got eye-patchy instead.... he hadn't earned a full rounded arc like Jonathan had at his death and he hadn't done anything like killing people either to karmically deserve a death, would just pissed me off..... which speaking of Anya.... which still made sense to me, but still its Anya!
 
Even if they killed off Willow or Xander or Giles at any time, it would still be watched and loved.
 
I don't think I could ever have gotten over it if they had killed Willow... that could easily have brought me off the show. With anyone else (even Giles, though that, too, would have been very hard to swallow), I think the show would have been strong enough to pull it off.
 
Knowing the show as we do it can be hard to imagine killing of some of the characters. But I have no doubt that the show would have survived no matter who had been killed. But it´s kind of hard to imagining a show called "Buffy the vampire slayer" without a character named Buffy. Kill her? Fine, but she needs to come back.

The character I´d miss the most is Willow, but I can´t imagine that I would have stopped watching the show if she´s not been there. Too many great characters and with her gone somebody needs to step up and fill the void. I´d be crushed but the show would have survived, no problem.
 
For me, it depends entirely on how it was done. Towards the end of Season Six, I was nearly convinced that they were going to kill off Willow, and I was pretty upset at the thought. But: It could have been done in a way that kept it from spoiling the show for me. I'm a big fan of Willow & Tara, but I think that Tara's death was necessary for Willow's story, so it's sad, it's heartbreaking, but I didn't have to go on anti-depressants or wear sackcloth and ashes or anything.
 
If they had killed off Willow, i'd have been out for quite a while, i'd have come back, but i think my heart wouldn't have been in it quite as much.
 
They could have worked around the loss of one of their major characters without too much difficulty. For instance, assume that the spear wound Giles received in Season 5 had been fatal. The others could have carried on without him, and the next 2 seasons could have played out with very little change. Anya could have handled the majority of what Giles did in Season 6, primarily giving Buffy money at the beginning and working the magic at the end. The Potentials in Season 7 could have been rounded up by Wood, and he would have had a much more interesting role than high school principal.

Anything that any of the major characters did could have either been worked around or done by a new character. Nobody was inexpendable except Buffy, and that was only because the show had her name. If it had been simply "Vampire Slayer," Buffy could have been killed by either the Angelus in Season 2 or the Mayor in Season 3, and either Kendra or Faith could have taken over.

The only really person absolutely necessary to the show was Joss, and only him because the show was his baby.
 
It depends, WHEN would they be killed off?

If say, Willow or Xander were to be killed off in season 2, would it have survived? Sure. Season 6? After they became just as important as Buffy? Once again, probably....but the show probably would suffer in some way. I mean the core four...you just CAN'T 😛

Ummm....even though my favorite, Anya, died I'd still watch the show if it would have continued :nod:
 
I think if Giles died, id be heartbroken... and find it hard to watch. would i continue watching? probably. but itd be tough to deal with.
 
When the characters on Joss Whedon shows die they don't really leave. I didn't like seeing Fred go but then we got a chance to see Illyria, who couldn't be more different from Fred. I think if one of the main cast of Buffy had been killed off, they would still have been written in the show somehow.
 
Well they killed Anya in choosen am still raw from that ::uh::
I think she was a major character shes my fave one actually lol I miss her x

I think killing one of the major 4 characters would have killed me inside X

Well, I would have kept watching thats for sure.

But Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles is really important for the show so I am guessing (impossible to really say though) that it would have lost some of its magic for me.
I really missed Giles in season 6 and 7 even though he is around quite a lot.

Yeah. It would have carried on, and people would have watched, but like I said the balance would be off. People wouldn't accept a new Willow or Xander just as they didn't accept a replacement for Tara in Kennedy.

Strangely I think the only character of the main Scoobies that could have worked would have been Buffy. I think Season Six could have worked just as well without her. It would have been good to see the Scoobies try to deal with The Trio with the Buffybot (although, that wouldn't be a main character), and only when Willow goes dark does she revive Buffy. In her coffin. Then Xander does the whole yellow crayon thing, Season ends, and Buffy waking up is dealt with at the start of Season Seven. If not for the title, I actually think that would have been quite interesting. She wouldn't be gone for good though.

I actually really like that idea, also Buffy's the only one that literally comes with a built in 'replacement' for her VS function (Faith/Buffybot) so it's do-able

Interesting idea but it would be kind of strange watching show Buffy The Vampire Slayer without Buffy in it.

I don't think that it should have lasted THAT long, but, yes, I think that there should have been at least 2 or 3 episodes at the beginning where the gang was trying to patrol the hellmouth minus Buffy while Willow researched the resurrection spell and located the Urn of Osiris while keeping Giles in the dark about the whole thing.
