did anybody hear about the couple who wanted to call their son 4Real, but couldn't because there was a number in it? they've now decided to call him Superman, apparently. so i put this to the board...

is it wrong to name your child after a TV character? would you consider naming your son or daughter after a character in a movie?
of course, this doesn't just apply to TV and movies, novels and song lyrics would be heaped in there to.

i know that all parents choose their children's names for different reasons, people find the perfect name everywhere. but that's not what i'm talking about.

would you purposfully name your child after a television/movie character, knowing that for the rest of your life, you will connect them to that show/movie?

Nope, I wouldn't want to saddle the poor kid with a name that will lead to playground or classroom ridicule, no matter how much I liked a show...then again names like Cordelia, Faith,(Ale)Xander, Giles and Dawn are perfectly OK and no-one need ever know...I'd draw the line at Rupert though - too much of a posho, Public School, Hooray Henry ring to it (with apologies to anyone here with that name 🙂)

Yeah, names like that are what I'm talking about. I like the names Cordelia and Faith. Wouldn't it be a shame for a parent to name one of their kids after a demon? Little Gachnar, Grooselaug, Ethros, Larconis, or Krevlorneswath. LOL

i want to name my son Xander, well, actually,Alexander, which i've always liked, since before Buffy. but i would call him Xander, after my fave character.
i'd definitely avoid the names Buffy, Drusilla, Fred, Glory, etc. for girls. but i would consider Gwen.

and i guess, if you wanted to name your daughter Cordelia, you could say it's from Shakespear, not Buffy, lol.
 
I knwo some countries actually have laws against such things.

I feel that if its a regular name, such as the ones that Mr P suggests(though I actually like Rupert) its fine, but silly names like 'Spiderpig'(as was a recent thing on facebook), well that's, in my opinion, a form of premeditated child abuse as that child WILL be bullied and ridiculed.
 
That's crazy! I remember watching a news show about some parents that wanted to name their little girl "Metallica". The government (and I'm not sure on this, but they must have to approve the names or whatnot) wouldn't let them. After a huge fight, the parents finally won and got to name their girl Metallica. Yikes!

I don't think I would ever name my child after a well known character from a movie or tv show. That's just weird, in my opinion. I could see how people would want to do it though.

I don't have a problem with using books though. There are so many books, and they are a little bit more obscure than pop culture movies/tv. Society would probably not ridicule your child's name based on a book character (within reason here. For instance, I wouldn't name my child Jaberwocky!)

But I am falling into that trap here, as I've told my husband that if we have a boy, we are naming him Edward, after my favorite character in the Twilight series books, just cuz I like it! 🙂
 
I love the name Lilly (thanks to Veronica Mars) but since Im never having kids and thats a proper name its not an issue anyway.

books are another thing. books hold so many meaning to different peole. my favorite character from a book is Josephine from 'Little Women' some of my friends have laughed at me when i tell them that i'd consider calling my daughter Josephine, Josie for short. they consider THAT child abuse! lol. i also like Nathaniel, another favorite character from a novel (hmm, wonder if Stuckintraffic saw that coming? lol)

i really think there shuld be some sort of law that prevents people giving their kids stupid names like 'SpidarPig' or 'Audio Science', which Shannon Sossoman apparently thught was the perfect name for her kid. wonder if she lost a bet?
 
Yeah, and take it from a teacher... when you get perfectly sweet normal kids in you class that have the unfortunate name tacked onto them, it's an interesting situation. I feel sorry for the kids in my class that have a hard time spelling their own names, because they have to constantly try to remember the combination of letters that do not follow any spelling rules!
 
Maybe it's ok to name your child a ridiculous name if you are a 'celeb'...... think it's a rare celeb that actually gives their child/children relatively normal names these days.

All my kids have got normal names and I wouldn't of wanted to saddle them with names that meant they were going to have to be ridiculed throughout their life. In fact, if anything they have quite plain names 'lol' Sam, Ben, Joe, Jack and Evie. 😀

I think if you wanna be a little more elaborate, then you can always do that with a middle name as it's not used as often. 😀
 
My mum, when thinking of names for me and my brother, tried to get names people couldnt make nicknames out of. Boy was she wrong 😛

my mom wanted to call my brother Elvis!! i was 4 years old and told her that i was't going to grow up with a brother called Elvis...thankfully, she agreed, and called him Aaron, lol

I could never name a child of mine Superman or Spiderpig or something stupid like that. Now using names like Cordelia, Harmony, Buffy, Willow or something like that I really don't see a problem. I mean unless you are going to go around introducing your child "This my daughter Cordelia. Oh by the way I named her after Cordelia from the t.v. show Buffy the Vampire Slayer." no one is going to know whether you named your child for that reason or not. I actually went to high school with a girl that was named Buffy long before the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired. I thought Buffy was a cute and unique name when I knew this girl. I mean how many girls out there do you know that are named Buffy? I only knew the one. I have yet to meet any one else with that name. I might have considered a name like Cordelia or Faith had I had a girl instead of a boy. I probably wouldn't have picked the names because they were Buffy characters so much as I actually like the names cause they are cute.
 
i know a girl named Buffy...or rather Buffie. she's alsoa huge fan of the shows, more ngel really, but still, i thought it was interesting.
 
I guess depending on the name you know... If its a really out there name then no but if its a nice name like Dawn or even Willow i would think about it actually in fact most of the baby names i thought of when pregnant had something to do with buffy and i didn't even realize it at first like

I would name my kids after a favorite character of mine *IF* it was a relatively normal name.

A friend of mine had a baby a year ago, and when she was pregnant, two of the names on their list were Anya and Xander. Somehow they ended up with Lorelie, tho.....
 
In France, you do not have the right to name your kid Superman. For instance, a mother wanted to name her baby Asterix (a character from a comics) but it was refused and she had to look for another one.

As for me, I would never choose a name like superman, batman and so on. But "real" names like Xander, Cordelia, Ophelia etc would be ok.

I want to name my child that (two 'l's of course, because it looks better written down). And my mom likes that name (not that it has any difference to whether I would or not, but its nice she agrees). So now I just need a daughter... 😛

Although most people would probably just assume I named her after Lily Allen...
