Does It Really Matter?
I read a news article this morning about a child that was stabbed to death.
In the paper alongside it was an article about people protesting Heathrow due to global warming.
A guy was beaten and killed because he challenged some youths who were grafitying a wall.
There are more issues in Iraq with alot of people fighting and dying.
OK, when you read those, does it really matter if a Hollywood star didn 't turn up to a wrap party for a show (doesn't matter how great the show was) she was in due to conflicting work commitments?
I think you'll find the answer is no.
In the scope of the real world, you are absolutely right. It doesn't make a damn that Sarah wasn't at the wrap party when you compare it to the global warming crisis.
It doesn'y matter whether Buffy "really" loves Spike more than Angel when you compare that to the number of homeless people roaming the streets of our planet.
The number of home invasions in this country have increased by a terrifying rate in the last five years, and that is certainly more important than whether Buffy ever knew about Connor.
And it most certainly is more important that a national sports celebrity has been engaged in the "sport" of watching dogs tear themselves to pieces for the gratification of a bunch of sick people than just how much pig's blood it takes to sustain a vampire.
But this is not a forum set up to discuss, complain about, or solve those more important issues. This is a place where a group of people of diverse backgrounds come to discuss their mutual enjoyment of the creative talents of a man named Joss Whedon. That doesn't mean that we don't care about the real world, it simply means that we don't spend every waking hour brooding over the bad things in life.
If a specific issue upsets you, work to correct it. I do, and have for probably longer than you have been alive. Habitat For Humanity can always use more workers. The ASPCA will gladly take your contributions, as will any number of other worthy causes. Write to your congressman about your concerns, or, better yet, get out and campaign for the man or woman you believe will best fight for your causes.
There are places you can go and things you can do to help relieve the suffering of your fellow man or improve the environment. Do what you think is right, I do, and I'm sure quite a few other people here do as well. This, however, is a place where we come to get a little relief from the real world, a place where we deal with something we enjoy. It helps us deal with those things that we don't enjoy.
