X Factor UK 2015

I am watching. Can't say I'm happy about it as I'd rather be out but there you go. Just had another guy from my home town of Witham on there. I've seen him play at local festivals with his friend and he's much more relaxed. Shame about his audition as he sounds much better usually.

Sorry to rain on your parade, lovely Nixy, but programmes like the X Factor are the exact reason I don't have a TV licence or any TV channels!

I do hope you enjoy it though.

Don't you have to pay a TV License if you have a laptop? Or has that ridiculous rule been displaced?
X Factor is my biggest guilty pleasure, I know I should hate it, but it's got me hooked into it. Part of my pleasure is derived from dissecting the sometimes screamingly obvious reality TV tropes and predicting consequent newspaper articles etc. I also love examining the judges relationships. Again, I recognise the fact that an academic such as myself should hate this show, but I find it incredibly addictive/entertaining TV

The law states you only have to pay for a tv licence if you're watching live TV. I guess that's only been made more clear in recent times as there's been a huge influx of people cancelling their licences since finding that out.

I just remember when I was 18, so 9ish years ago, I went to university and on the welcome pack to my halls they said I had to pay for a TV license if I had a laptop because I could watch TV on it - needless to say I ignored that ridiculous rule in true student fashion 🙂

I collect and restore antique radios and one of the things I see with radios starting in 1932 here (in Canada) is a Radio Receiving License. It didn't last very long but it did some damage to the adoption of radio. We never had a television license here - television was struggling enough.

For the Britishers here, the first time I visited England, I was meeting with people at Thorn EMI Central Research Labs in Hayes, Middlesex (about five miles north of Heathrow Airport and about a mile north of Thorn EMI headquarters. Or hindquarters according to some people.) I noticed a television tower against the side of the building when I went in and since the person I was about to see was in another meeting for about 15 minutes, I was invited to look at the television museum. Several sets from the 1930's of Rolls-Royce quality. Obviously each set had a provenance from one of the peerage although it was not stated because it was fantastically expensive in those days. When I finally got to the lab where the person I was meeting was, he said, "Oh, did you see the tower outside? That was the top ten feet of the first television transmitting tower."

I said, "The first for Thorn EMI?"

He said, "No, the first. Ever. Anywhere."

TV broadcasting started first in England in 1936.

Ditto... Half the contestants are bought and paid for too.

They still do that. I told my friend to boycott... But he's always one to follow the rules.
