All Xander had to do was make the decision to not physically abuse his wife and/or children. All he has to do is say to himself 'hey, I'm not going to do that, I have control of my destiny'.

I can argue this till the cows come home, because I'm so positive that I'm right! Of course, when it comes to a matter of opinion - everyone's opinion is as right as mine if they are as positive in their head of their opinion.

LOL did you quote Buffy like 3 times in there?? 😛 Well yea he could have, but he didn't, probably because he wasn't sure of himself. But still, he did it because he was afraid he'd hurt peoples he loved.

I like to argue a lot too, but I'm not here to change your opinion! So I'll leave it at that. Xand is the man!

I'm not here to change anyones mind about Xander, I respect people that like his character... Kinda 😉

One of my good friends in the real world likes Xander and I love to give him crap about liking him, but I have to know when to stop before pissing people off!

I'm definitely not a big fan of Xander, I don't like judgemental people in real life so why would I like them on television? His sense of 'humour' really rubs me the wrong way as well. I don't find it funny at all. It's that kind of attention seeking humour that always bugs me. I definitely prefer a more deadpan humour.

I'm trying to see past all his horrible traits these days, but I find it difficult.

I think Xander would actually bug a lot of people in real life.

*gasp* you're like one of the very few people that i know that don't like his sense of humor. But I can see where you're coming from. I love his sense of humor, but I do agree that if Xander were a real person, and I was his friend, I'd kick him in the nads for not knowing when to shut up lol

I think comparing Xander leaving Anya at the altar to Willow becoming addicted to magic is a very poor comparison. Willow had an addiction. Personally I can't see Buffy running away from a wedding. We see Buffy time and time again follow through on what the right thing to do is, rather than what she wants.

And Xander suffered nineteen years in an abusive home, had doubts about marrying Anya that soon, and then had to live in a future that painted him as an abusive monster like his father and Anya as a cheater and he had to raise her daughter while knowing she wasn't his. He spent the entire day thinking that this was going to be his future, didn't know the truth until Anya told him by the end of the episode, and everybody expects him to calm down and act rationally in a matter of twenty minutes before the wedding?

He did a bad thing, but it's understandable why he did it. And personally, I felt far worse for him than I did for Anya. He was suffering throughout the episode, she only suffered in the end.

Buffy ran away in S2, which was also bad but understandable.

Xander never actually maned up. He never took the time to learn to fight for himself. Or to speak up on his behalf. I find this so annoying. Even Dawn learned to fight better then he did.

I don't understand peoples problem with this 'he never learned to fight' thing. Xander was human boy for the biggest part of the series and he did what he could. I always thought it was rather admirable that despite his lack of fighting skills he was always there - always willing to help in a fight.
Besides, like someone else said Buffy made it clear from the start that the fight was hers so to speak - why would you try to be GI Joe when your best friend is a Superhero?

Personally I think Xander manned up because he never tried to be someone he wasn't. So he wasn't coordinated martial arts guy? Big whoop? He knew how to handle himself in a fight and he stuck to his strenghts. He's hell of a carpenter not to mention a sort of glue to the group. And of course always there willing to help. That means more than all the super powers in the world.

(Other characters stuck to their strengths as well - Willow her magic, Giles could fight be he was hardly a master fighter, and e.g. Wesley who makes use of his guns a lot of the time... they did the best they could with what they had. And Dawn -yeah she learned to fight because she had Buffy as a sister to look up to. I hardly think she got better than Xander though)

Also I would say Xander always spoke his thoughts, no matter if the others didn't want to hear them

This I agree with. I like Xander's sense of humor but I don't think I could be friends with someone so butt-insky in real life. That part of him I always found rather off-putting.

Xander's decision to leave Anya was evidently the wrong one, he admits that himself. However his reasoning for it was completely understandable for me. He was thinking about Anya when he left, he didn't want to hurt her in the long run and he was worried he would do that by marrying her.

It is natural for someone to second guess themselves especially after seeing that vision he was shown.

People will say he was weak, should have just got on with it, that wasn't Xander. Xander was always conscious of helping his friends and trying to do the right thing by them. On this instance he made the wrong call but his intentions were good.

Sometimes people make mistakes, infact people regularly make mistakes in life changing circumstances. Xander isn't alone.

Yes, it is. Because it's utterly unfair to Xander to even compare these things. And I say this a big fan of Willow. Willow's descent into darkness killed two people and almost ended the world. Xander...gasp...hurt Anya's feelings. Excuse me while I don't care for the feelings of mass murderer.

Not to mention that it isn't actually true. When Buffy skipped town after Becoming who is shown fighting vamps? Not Giles who apparently knows how to fight. It's Willow, Oz and Xander. They were killing six out of ten. Who is fighting vamps in Prophecy Girl? Why, Xander together with Angel and they did hold their ground quite well. Just because he didn't do a "level up" as if he was a character from an RPG videogame doesn't mean Xander couldn't fight.
