Um how bout no?

Any other Buffy fans out there tired of being lumped together with the Twilight bunches?

I didn't like Twilight, I enjoyed the intense relationship as much as the next hardcore romantic but I don't feel that's enough to make me a fan. It's not a bad set of books or a bad movie but it's not comparable to BtVS in my opinion. Buffy isn't even anything LIKE Twilight save for the vampires, which aren't even the same 'kind' at that.

Just because kids today think that the Twilight saga is the Godsend of the century doesn't mean fans of the true vampire phenomenon will automatically like it.

Just sayin! ::bbat::

I get this a lot. I always have to explain how much better Buffy is than Twilight :) Just 'cause it has vampires doesn't mean I'll like it. I'm not some vampire groupie, lol.
It seems the only place this discussion is brought up is in Buffy circles.

Those who actually watch Buffy see it for what it is and dont group the two. Those of the younger generation who never saw Buffy enjoy Twilight for what it is. Nowhere have i seen people professing Twilight to be the successor to Buffy...though plenty of people desperate to defend Buffy's honour.

Or maybe you really are taking to heart the 14 year olds in love with 'Edward' who argue irrationally to no end all over the internet. Either way, this isn't really a discussion, your fighting a bunch of prepubescent teenagers.

Sadly, I'm going to have to murder you for that comment. I turned 14 in March. And I hate Edward CUllen with a passion. And Robert Pattinson really can't act
You know, as a true Twilight addict, I have to say that I completely agree with this thread. While I love Twilight, it really can't compare with BtVS. And just because you like Buffy does NOT mean you'd love it and vice-versa: even if you don't like Buffy or "all that vampire crap" (quote from my mom) you might enjoy it (my mom loved it, LOL).

This makes me think about something that happened the other day. I posted a comment on my Facebook about this new series I'm reading, "The Morganville Vampires" and had a friend ask if it was as good as Twilight. It really got me thinking about how you can compare books/TV shows/movies that have common denominators but aren't in the same category at all. My opinion--you can't. Same principle applies here IMO.

if you put a decent sperator bar between your post and sig ( ie ___________________ ) then it would make more sense. I agree with what your saying, but got confused with your whister quote

SUCH an intelligent post- I agree completely!
It's something I keep hearing. Not from news or headlines but from friends and others, Twilight fans.

Well I've heard 'If you like Doctor Who you'll love Buffy' and I know people who think that is absolute balderdash.

I guess the point is, different people have different opinions.

On a Buffy the Vampire Slayer board you're gonna get people agreeing with you and a few disagreeing, but go ask the same question on a Twilight forum and you'll get alot of positives and even people saying 'Buffy isn't as good as Twilight'.

Also, 'Just because kids today think that the Twilight saga is the Godsend of the century doesn't mean fans of the true vampire phenomenon will automatically like it' is just a silly line.

I like Buffy, thats why I am here but to call it the 'true vampire phenomenon' - Twilight, in its short time, is at least as commercially successful as Buffy was and visible to a wider audience.

Spuffyy agrees: Quality not quantity
What a silly comeback!
Twilight has one movie and 4 books and memorabilia.
Buffy has a movie, a 7 season TV show, a 5 season spin off show, a comic, a comic of the spin off, a spin off comic, numerous books and tons of memorabila.

You still want to argue quality over quantity.

I would argue that the one movie, 4 books and memorabilia are as widely known as the rest and likes by an equal number of, if not more, people.

Good job i couldn't give a shit what people think about my viewing choices. I remember being laughed at by roommates for wanting to watch Buffy...before i'd even seen an eppy

If anything, id prefer Twilight become more popular. What is it with peoples fascination for 'their' show to become popular/famous/loved? Buffy has always been a 'cult' show...understood only by those who actually watched it. It got limited yet consistant ratings...imo...the mark of a good show.

I have to agree with this thread. Twilight is nothing like Buffy. But it does hold it's own. I'm both a BtVS and Twilight fan, but Buffy still reigns supreme in my mind.

AMEN.... Very well said!
Buffy is amazingly written.

Twilight is purple prose and Mary Sue.

All that needs to be said.

Also, Buffy is a lot more male accessible.

who said buffy is like twilight ;s

*confused*

wwhy would people say that? thats just utter crap.
just because the scenario between angel and buffy , doesn't mean it's the same ,

i hate when people say that Twilight fans immediately love Muse, cos one of their songs is in twilight, i'm like naw,ive always loved them years before twilight came out ,

ha rant over

x

First of all, let me say that I am SO HAPPY that no one's come in here to call it "stupid drivel" or talk about hating Twilight for the sake of hating it, yet... That shows that some progress is being made around here, so that is always good. 😀
I completely agree with this thread. I love Twilight BECAUSE it's so different than Buffy, not because "I like Buffy, so therefore I love Twilight on principle". Just because you like/love one does not mean you'll automatically like/love the other. The writing style is very different and the vampires in Twilight act nothing and look nothing like anything on Buffy. To lump the two fanbases into one is pretty narrowminded and sterotypical IMO.

I could not agree more! Karma for a very well-written post!
Edmund, I can't karma you again but I'd disagree you back. I said quality over quantity to this:

"I like Buffy, thats why I am here but to call it the 'true vampire phenomenon' - Twilight, in its short time, is at least as commercially successful as Buffy was and visible to a wider audience."

Nobody cares about their "commercial success" because Buffy has substance that those books and movies couldn't match in a million years. Are you even reading my OP or are you just trying to stir the pot?

quite a few people care about their commercial success
Come on now Spuffyy... Let's all be nice and discuss this like adults! I don't think Al was trying to "stir the pot"; he was simply pointing out that Twilight doesn't have near the merchandise that Buffy does.
Although since Twilight has 4 books that are all going to be made into movies, I think the merchandising will probably give the Buffyverse a run for its money!

I absolutely agree.

The two series have nothing in common. That's like saying that Firefly and Star Trek are the same because they're both set in space. Or that Dawson's Creek and My So-Called Life are comparable because they're both about teenagers. Just because both Twilight and Buffy have vampires doesn't mean that they're one in the same and fans of one would like the other. AS you all know, case in point: Me. I love Buffy, but you all know how I feel about Twilight.

Yet, I would like to add that kids who are into Twilight also have the potential to become Buffy fans. I have talked to a few whom "discovered" a love of vampire fiction through reading Twilight, and have since gone on to get into Buffy, Anne Rice, and other vampire shows (Angel, Moonlight, True Blood, etc). So, I guess Twilight as a point of interest in vampires which could lead to future Buffy fans can't be a bad thing 🙂

Kids these days. Man, everytime I hear a person trying to compare Twilight and Buffy it irritates me to no avail.

S
Silum
yikes! Kids shouldnt be watching True Blood!
D
DrusillaRox
Agree with sy. True blood's like soft core porn
Buffy and Twilight? Honestly comparing the two annoys me. Yay! Vampires are cool...again! I actually did read all the Twilights and would say they are really nothing like Buffy. The vamps are portrayed completely differently. But once a a vampire lover always a vampire lover? For me, Yes. 🙂

First off, NO SQUABBLING. I am so NOT doing this again. Be NICE with your opinions.

Second, there is SOME truth in that quote.
Maybe not, you'll run out and buy the movie posters and plaster your house with them. But, there are two general "types" of vampire stories. The ones where the vampires are evil ruthless monsters and descend on a town and wipe out all the helpless villagers and then the ones where the vampires have thoughts and feelings, don't really want to kill everyone, and fall in love (sometimes with humans)...Buffy, Moonlight, Interview with a Vampire, Twilight, etc.
And one could easily say, that if you really enjoyed the deep plot where Buffy struggled with her feelings for Spike and Angel or her life with the "supernatural vs. normal", then it would tend to reason that you'd also enjoy Twilight.
Which kinda makes me just a weirdo because I did NOT like either of those parts of Buffy, but I did like the books anyway.

I guess there is also the parts of Twilight where they play off the other character's strong suits to "win the battles"....which is kinda like Buffy, in a way. Maybe that's the part I like.
Or the part where Bella ends up being one of the strongest vampires ever and saves the day even though she thinks she's a big wimp and not able to do it. Not unlike another girl we know.

But, it's not like saying, "Oh, you like Vampires? You'll love Twilight." There is at least SOME thought process to it. I don't think it doesn't make any sense. The rest just comes down to personal preference.

Very well said Lou!!! :)
I personally have heard people saying things to the effect of "If you like Buffy? You'll LOVE Twilight!" that's why I decided to give the book a read...I read about 5 pages and, well I got the same feeling I recieved after I read the first few pages of Harry Potter this mixture of disappointment and embarrasement.
I say to everyone; Do not believe it if you are told they are similar. THEY ARE NOT.
And if you haven't heard anyone say it then fair enough...and you are rather lucky.

DawnNotSummers
DawnNotSummers
They are not similiar at all... And to be fair, the first time I read it it took me a while to get into it. I still don't get very invested until the van crash scene. After that the book really takes off.
Edmund, I can't karma you again but I'd disagree you back. I said quality over quantity to this:

Yes, I am reading your opening post, and your thread title.
What I am reading is that you have decided to 'stir the pot' by making such a pointless comment as the title.

You make a claim, for all intent an purpose its your claim because "I've heard people say it" is the equivalent of "I have a friend who had a friend", and then make a resounding claim that its wrong.

Well I know people who like Buffy and love Twilight!

But then I know people who like apples but hate apple pie!
I know people who hate tomatoes but love Ketchup.
I know people who eat meat but hate liver.
I know people who hate computers but spend all day online.

I know plenty of people who like or dislike one thing and that is not comparable to something else.

You made this thread about comparing the two, no one else did.

As for "nobody cares about their 'commercial success'", again with sweeping statements and generalisations.

I think you will find there are many people who love the success of Twilight just like there are people who 'care' about Buffy's success.

The only people I see lumping the groups together are the people who are trying to distance themselves from it, which is rather pathetic.

If people happen to like both, they like both, of they like one over the other, then thats how it is too and if they like neither, well bully for them, but nobody 'lumps' me in a group, I do that just like everyone else, so I really think you need to stop worrying about what 14 year olds like and dislike and just get on with you life!

Somone once said that Bella and Edward was the retarded version of Bangel. I hate Bangel but not even I would dare to say that! It's an insult to Bangel, to Buffy, to Joss!
Twilight is to me a collection of different vampire stories through time, with an attempt of making it look wellplanned. Twilight vampires are a discrace to everything vampire related!
