I see what you mean. While I love Lorne, I also see him more as a very frequently recurring guest star than one of the "true" regulars, even though he's in the opening credits.from the Angel crew I love all characters but sometimes I felt that Lorne didn't quite fit with the rest...
Seems you were the last one I karmafied, so I have to make a new post to agree (and have the chance to babble a bit more 🙂 ).I think Lorne was hugely important. he didnt get many storylines but i thought he was really funny. except wesley in s1 and s2 lorne was the only one who brought fun and comedy to the gang. yuo got to have someone like that.
-Yes, Joyce is a terrible mother, but she's Mom. And especially in high school, that makes her important.
I agree 200% with everything else you said in your post, but how do you figure Joyce is a bad mother?
I know that people are going to reply to this by bringing up what she said in Bargaining ("If you leave this house, don't even think about coming back!"), but we all know she didn't mean that. She was just letting out some of her frustration and fear, hence the fact that she was expecting Buffy to come back. She protected, loved, comforted, and cared for her daughters even under the most extreme circumstances. I think she was an exceptional character and mother.
Nah, I'm sure you'll do much better than that. 🙂IIn all honesty, her complete early-season naivety aside, I hope in the future I can be as half as good a Mother as Joyce was. (But hopefully InsaneMystic won't find me annoying.....😉)
At least we didn't have to endure Sheila in every other ep, unlike other Moms in the show. Though you're right, her two appearances ("Gingerbread", and one offscreen call up to Willow's room in one other, I think it was in "Lie to Me") are enough to not make me want to see more of her anyway. If you want an example of a bad Mother in the Buffyverse look at Sheila Rosenberg. In Gingerbread, from her you-cut-your-hair comment we learn she hasn't even looked at her daughter in six months.
Ooh, I can't believe I had forgotten about this one, but I've only just re-watched "Ted" and there's another moment ripe for Joyce-bashing (don't nail me down on the exact quote, as you know I'm re-translating from the German dubbed version):Like you said, the only real instance of a bad moment (I'm not including Gingerbread since Joyce was techincally possessed like all the other adults at the time) is in Becoming (I assume that's what you meant by Bargaining.
Buffy: Mom, Ted threatened me.
Joyce: What? (looks concerned for a second, than smiles dismissively) No, he didn't.
Siding with your boyfriend and not your daughter, when she tells you he's ready to use violence on her? That's major bad for a mum. Especially since it's unfortunately a rather common real-life situation (remember that at that moment, Uncle Teddy still seemed like a normal - even though none too emotionally stable - human male).
