Your Least Favourite Character.

The only character that I don't really like is Xander. I thought that it was disgusting that he left Anya at the altar. His treatment of people different to himself was always bordering on discrimination. I always found it strange that he refused to accept that Spike and Angel could be good people and always assumed it was jealously. His obsession with being cool and wanted went further then a simple need to be accepted and absolutely annoyed the hell out of me. He was a walking contradiction most of the time, making many mistakes that needn't be made. Oh, and his jokes always sucked.

I understand WHY he was on the show, and the part he played in the core four, but it doesn't change the fact that I feel he was on the show purely to annoy the hell out of me! I have so many more reasons as to my dislike for Xander, which have been discussed at HUGE length with my only real life Buffy-fan acquaintance who absolutely adores him, but I won't get into it to much more... Sorry if I offended any fans of the Xand-man.

The other characters that I didn't like all brought something to the storyline. But not Kennedy. She basically just craps all over Tara's memory, declares herself Queen of the Potentials in the most grating way possible, and gets Willow's character into an arc that she's just not ready for yet (still feeling bad about the end of the world thingy.)

To make things even worse, she doesn't even have any chemistry with Willow (despite obviously being written that way.) And the "payoff"? Killer in Me. Which isn't a bad ep, but not worth having to put up with Kennedy for a whole season.

Other characters that I don't like at least have some bearing on the plot:
-Yes, Joyce is a terrible mother, but she's Mom. And especially in high school, that makes her important.
-Yes, Dawn is irritating, but she's the key. And I know some of you didn't like season 5, but at least they got an entire season out of her existance rather than one lousy episode. (Anyone else watch Jon & Kate plus eight? Mady will grow up to be Dawn.)
-Riley may be very Blah, but he represents Buf's one (legitimate) attempt at relations with a non-vamp.

No one brings as little to the table as Kennedy. She just seemed so... unnecessary. Boo her!

unlike most people i have no problem with either Kennedy or Dawn...especially Dawn...But just like most of you I can't stand Riley..at first he was ok(although I still didn't like him)but especially in s5 he totally sucked 😛
from the Angel crew I love all characters but sometimes I felt that Lorne didn't quite fit with the rest...Connor was tiring but he got over it+he rules in ATF

I see what you mean. While I love Lorne, I also see him more as a very frequently recurring guest star than one of the "true" regulars, even though he's in the opening credits.
Well anyway, from what I've seen from Angel S5 yet, he's really sadly underused since the takeover of W&H (with the notable exception of "Live of the Party"), so that does nothing to remedy him coming off as a semi-outsider in the group.

Glory is my most hated big bad (and i dont think thats a secret around here lol) and i really agree with the Kennedy hate.

I also HATE Harmony. ugh. she annoys the crap out of me.

I think Lorne was hugely important. he didnt get many storylines but i thought he was really funny. except wesley in s1 and s2 lorne was the only one who brought fun and comedy to the gang. yuo got to have someone like that.

Seems you were the last one I karmafied, so I have to make a new post to agree (and have the chance to babble a bit more 🙂 ).

Lorne definitely was important, and his comedy factor was utterly needed as a counterweight to ol' Mopey! Comic relief in the truest sense of the word.
It's just that he so seldomly is in (or even near) the center of attention that he seems less a part of the team than any of the others. Pretty much the same as Anya in Buffy (though I have to admit I like him a lot better - don't understand this to mean I'd hate Anya, she just isn't one of my fave chars).

i hated kennedy she was such a brat! i remember watching one clip when she was talking to spike and she was saying that they (the potentials) were trained and they knew better tham him. i just sat there and thought who the hell do you think your talking to!!!

I agree 200% with everything else you said in your post, but how do you figure Joyce is a bad mother?

I know that people are going to reply to this by bringing up what she said in Bargaining ("If you leave this house, don't even think about coming back!"), but we all know she didn't mean that. She was just letting out some of her frustration and fear, hence the fact that she was expecting Buffy to come back. She protected, loved, comforted, and cared for her daughters even under the most extreme circumstances. I think she was an exceptional character and mother.

I completely agree with everything you said in this post here. And it really frustrates me when, (I'm not talking about fans here who have opinions just for having opinions since that's well, our thing) people in academic circles constantly say that, as, like you Crazy Flakes, I don't understand how they came to that conclusion.

Like you said, the only real instance of a bad moment (I'm not including Gingerbread since Joyce was techincally possessed like all the other adults at the time) is in Becoming (I assume that's what you meant by Bargaining. As Bargaining is the season 6 opener 😉) but I don't think that is as bad as everyone says. For one she's shown to immediately regret her words the moment Buffy walks out the door and what Mother hasn't lost their rag to that extent with their child?

I myself had an instance when I was actually around 17, when my Mother told me she had had enough and if I didn't stop whatever it was that was causing the argument (I'll admit, I can't fully remember now) she told me she was sending me off to live with my Father (A true threat considering I didn't like him one bit) and that she wasn't going to help me out anymore, look after me, full stop and that I was on my own. I stayed at a friends for the weekend but by Monday my Mom and I were hugging with her apologizing for saying those things and me apologizing for pushing her too far. And neither of us held grudges for the situation, just as neither Buffy nor Joyce do after the events of Dead Man's Party. It's just the way the Mother/Daughter relationship is. Sometimes you love each other, sometimes you want them out of your life for good. And considering Becoming had EXTREME circumstances (Culminating in Buffy only telling her Mother to 'have another drink') I don't think that really can be used as evidence to show Joyce as a bad Mother.

And would a bad Mom, accept Dawn as a daughter despite finding out the truth about her? "She's not mine is she, but she does belong to us?". Joyce didn't care that she wasn't hers, that she technically wasn't family, she remembered her, loved her and so wouldn't stop loving and caring for her.

In Gingerbread, even Willow inadvertently points out what a good Mother Joyce is when commenting on the Mother-Daughter bonding on patrol when she says 'God, your Mother would actually take the time to do that?'. And the Scooby gang over and over again showed how much they liked/loved Joyce in a second-Mom kind of way. Similar to how Giles was much like a Father figure to them all. (Which totally fits into Joss' obsession with the non-traditional family; the one you choose instead).

And let's not forget Spike's nice quote "Joyce was the only one of the lot of you that I could stand . . . I liked the lady . . . She was decent. She didn't put on airs. She always had a nice cuppa for me. And she never treated me like a freak."

I understand how Joyce can frustrate some people (Ironically she drives my own Mother insane.) but just because she annoys you, whether sometimes or all the times, does not make her a bad Mother. All she seems to do is be Compassion Lady, even from an entirely neutral view there is no evidence that states she is a bad Mom. Just a good Mom, who like everyone else in the world, sometimes makes a mistake.

In all honesty, her complete early-season naivety aside, I hope in the future I can be as half as good a Mother as Joyce was. (But hopefully InsaneMystic won't find me annoying.....😉)

If you want an example of a bad Mother in the Buffyverse look at Sheila Rosenberg. In Gingerbread, from her you-cut-your-hair comment we learn she hasn't even looked at her daughter in six months.

I agree with you about Joyce and Willow's mom was the worst.
Eve is probably the most annoying chick I've ever seen. Ok, not really, but the actor's voice makes me wanna punch a wall 8 times in succession.

Nah, I'm sure you'll do much better than that. 🙂

Just remember, don't kick your kids out of the house if they're trying to stop the demonic apocalypse.

At least we didn't have to endure Sheila in every other ep, unlike other Moms in the show. Though you're right, her two appearances ("Gingerbread", and one offscreen call up to Willow's room in one other, I think it was in "Lie to Me") are enough to not make me want to see more of her anyway.

Check. Stopping the apocalypse comes first. ;-). And I'd forgotten about the mini moment of Sheila in Lie to Me....
Ugh. In BtVS... Dawn annoyed the hell out of me. Whiney little "give me attention!" brat. I was so hoping she'd jump into the portal at the end of S-5, thus SAVING the world AND no longer existing...

Also, TARA. I know, I know. Tara has a large following. But I never saw her as an important character. I felt like she only existed to walk Willow down the lesbian road, and died so Willow could join the dark side for a minute. I never felt "their great love", and I didn't see that she brought out so much wonderful goodness in Willow. Don't get me wrong, I didn't *hate* Tara, and I thought Amber Benson did a super job in the character, & I certainly didn't mind that Willow was gay (altho I'd have preferred her to be BI-SEXUAL, so that after Tara died, she could have been with Xander... but that would have messed up the Xander/Anya thing, so I'm shutting up about that for now...)

But I would much have preferred AMY to be Willow's witch-lover. I think they could have caused a great deal of chaos (in a fun, yet dangerous way) & would have made a totally cute couple.

As for Kennedy - I like her character - but hated her with Willow. It was an unnecessary relationship. WHY HAVE IT? Giles had no one. Buffy had no one. Xander & Anya sort of had each other, but mostly not. It was just a useless relationship, but I did like Kennedy as a potential. She had "Faith" potential, IMHO. The other potentials were weiners. 😛

In Ats, Connor got on my last damn nerve. Another whiney little brat, just like Dawn. I loved the couple of times that Angel kicked his ass, & could have happily enjoyed seeing him do so in every single episode.

& on a different note... can I just say that I'm so happy the bandwidth is no longer exceeded?!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Honestly, I don't dislike any character. I think they're all great. (Even Kennedy and Rona. Especially Rona. Rona was awesome.)

I liked Riley and Dawn. (Dawn's one of my favorite characters actually.)

But if I HAD to have a least favorite character, it'd probably be Hank. He was so...not there. Crappy dad IMO.

Ooh, I can't believe I had forgotten about this one, but I've only just re-watched "Ted" and there's another moment ripe for Joyce-bashing (don't nail me down on the exact quote, as you know I'm re-translating from the German dubbed version):

Buffy: Mom, Ted threatened me.
Joyce: What? (looks concerned for a second, than smiles dismissively) No, he didn't.

Siding with your boyfriend and not your daughter, when she tells you he's ready to use violence on her? That's major bad for a mum. Especially since it's unfortunately a rather common real-life situation (remember that at that moment, Uncle Teddy still seemed like a normal - even though none too emotionally stable - human male).

Kennedy, no explanation needed for those who have sat through Season 7 despite her whining. Loathe that character...

Ah, but remember at the time Joyce was full-on drugged by Ted? Willow said what was in the cookies made you mellow and compliant...primarily to Ted. I remember some Buffy writer (I forget which one- naughty me!) saying that the way they kept styling Joyce's hair was to tell how drugged she was. The more 50s Housewife her hair became the more drugged and therefore compliant to Ted she was. And in that particular scene her hair was very 1950s retro and she was currently eating all those things Ted had baked so she was definitely drugged in that Kitchen Scene.

But after he 'dies' and she's off the drugs (hair going back to normal curl) the first thing she says to him is her concern for Buffy and then she tries to get away from. Both of which admittedly gets Ted pretty angry....

So, you can't really put the blame on Joyce entirely for that since she was on a Cookie High.😀 Haha.

But in any other situation I agree, siding with your boyfriend over your child is a big capital NO-NO.

*grumbles* I buy into that excuse. Barely. XD
Actually, my least favorite character in the entirety of the Buffy series is Warren. He was cruel, bullying, and just a plain EVIL HUMAN BEING. The vampires, demons, cyborgs, and other assorted baddies on the show weren't really evil as much as they were just true to their nature and saw humans as prey. I never really felt any animosity toward any of them, they were just members of the opposing army. Warren was, as far as I can remember, the only really evil human ever depicted on the show.
