Your Opinion on Homosexuality.

Tillow4ever agrees: omg, i would have NEVER guessed you were gay! hahhaa.. wow. my gaydar is SO off lol
Seriously? I spout about it all the time. A while back I posted a vent about the girl I've been in love with forever getting married... it's on my twitter and facebook... your gaydar's not just off... your attention to detail is too. hahaha

Tillow4ever agrees: I bet your mom would die if she saw your siggy! hahaha

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, she probably would. You know her too well. 😛. I hadn't thought of that. Should I show her? 😛. Kidding.

My twin brother's philosophy on humanity is you don't have to like everyone, you just have to love them. If you really consider what that means, it's pretty amazing. He's taught me so much about tolerance. He's really a shining example of who I want to be. I don't like a LOT of people. But I should still love them. Let others live however, but don't hate them for anything.

Beautiful post, something we should all think about 🙂

I'm bi and I'm all for gay rights. I was even before I discovered myself. My best friend/sister is bi and I love her dearly. I grew up in Palm Springs, CA of course I'm gonna grow up thinking being gay/bi is okay. lol my mom has tons of gay friends and even our minister was gay. He was awesome too. So, yeah. (It's really late I don't know if any of this is coming out right....)

I read all of what's going on in here, but since it's almost 3 in the morning and my mind is not all here, I've decided not to reply to any of it... lol

Am I supposed to understand the dynamic between you and Banana Buffy? Haha.

There is such a thing as a wrong opinion, and sugarcoating it doesn't make it any less hurtful.

May be there is. But who are you, who is anyone, to decide what opinions are wrong? Or right for that matter? It's exactly like I said in my other post. If people start going around saying 'your opinion is wrong, mine is right, swap to mine' then you're causing conflict.

I think it's atrocious that homosexuals don't have equal rights. I think it's awful that we don't live in a world where EVERY SINGLE human being has them. That is what I fight for. So while you may be championing the rights of homosexuals by saying that someone who disagrees does in fact have the wrong opinion, you're still inciting the same kind of hatred and conflict.

As for what else I want to say, go and read Taake's post again. 🙂

that is actually exactly what I said in the thread on open relationships.
The opinion or belief that gay people are wrong, or that homosexuality is not a choice, etc. holds weight in this world, and it's used to hurt and marginalize people.

Whoops, I meant to say "[the belief] that homosexuality is a choice.", not "is not a choice" in my post. Can't edit now, but hope that I don't sound as unclear now.

I will make it clear once again. I'm not against expressing opinions. But if those opinions hurt people, I think you should keep them to yourself. Simple as that.

I know this will never change the world, but why hurt individuals? Not the whole world, individuals. People aren't the world. People are individuals, with feelings, with their own agenda. I can't agree with someone hurting the other just because they think differently. And that's what I'm trying to say. It's not that I don't agree with your views just 'cause your views are like that. I simply can't respect the fact that you don't respect. It's not the chicken and the egg. Respect the other and I'll respect your views as well. You just have to not hurt other person's lifestyle. I'm not speaking about anyone in particular. Just anyone who's opinion's expressions are just not the way to go, not because I don't agree with them, but because it hurts others. I'm not against anyone, right the other way around. Expressing these kind of thoughts are hurting people. Then why express them? I believe there is a thin line between expressing your opinion and offense people in the process. Do whatever you like, believe whatever you want, and I wouldn't judge you by that. But once you judge others, I will judge you because it's simply wrong. We're all human, we're all equal and we can't make hurting people who are "different" okay. Why even think it's wrong in the first place? Who says you're the one to determine that gay people are wrong?

Again, it's not about expression an opinion. It's about hurting people with your opinion, and that's not how our society should act. Express away! But be sure you're not voicing an opinion that can make people feel bad about themselves and about the society we live in.

Is it the *same* kind of hatred and conflict, though? Legal bigotry is permitted against LGBT people as a result of those opinions. Queer folks pay the price for them every day. The same cannot be said for those who criticize religion or homophobic/heterosexist attitudes. Yes, mayfever's comments may be inflammatory or unfair in a lot of people's eyes, but it's really not the same. It's a bit of a false equivalency to say that it is.

But being opposed to equal rights for gay people IS wrong. A democratic society isn't about being right or wrong, it's about compromise and living in peace. Since gay people are not harming others with their 'gayness', there's no reason to deny them equal rights, just like there's no reason to deny someone with a different religion equal rights just because you yourself don't believe in said religion.
The fact that gay people don't have equal rights is an anomaly and is in violation of the key principles of democracy. Believing that homosexuality is wrong while not being opposed to equal rights is an acceptable opinion to have however.

I think we're venturing into another discussion altogether... we're talking about the merits and evils of freedom of speech now, albeit on the basis of gay rights as an example. Naturally, our democratic society at least in theory grants everyone to voice their opinion (it's more liberal in the US than e.g. in Germany, where you can get sued for disavowing the holocaust), because it was founded on the basis of the assumption that every enlightened, consciously living person is able to form their own opinion. Of course, that includes unpopular and stupid opinions as well, because, after all, not every stupid opinion is unpopular and vice versa.

In that respect, of course EntertainUs is allowed to speak her mind, that's what this thread is for. I also applaud her for doing so by merely stating her own position, and not trying to convince us of it. I know I don't have to agree with her and I don't, but it does not mean that I have to accept it as equal to my own just because of that. I've said it before, and I'm saying it again: Someone could, in the politest possible terms, point out to me that non-white people are inferior to white ones, and he would still be a racist b*****d. It's no different just because the gay rights movement hasn't been around that long yet. I daresay most of us will live to see a society where LGBT people will have achieved the same acceptance as non-white people in white societies today: equal on paper and accepted by the majority of the people, but I don't think discrimination will ever fully disappear.

Maybe what I wanted to say was not that opinions are wrong but that gay rights for me are not a matter of opinion.

Willowmylove agrees: Pride parades: you're here, you're queer, we know. shut up.
Oh my god yes! And a ridiculously stupid reason I've heard ultra conservatives say gay people shouldn't get married is that we're all sluts and letting us get married is one step closer to letting pedophiles get married (although I think the argument is completely canceled out by the fact that pedophiles DO get married but whatever). You give them the stuff that fuels that flawed argument by having a celebration of your gayness turn into "how slutty can you be?" At a time, I know the flashy BAM of pride parades had a purpose... but now, we need them to show that we're just normal people doing normal things with normal lives in normal clothes. We need to be just normal or we're not going to get the rights we deserve.

The pride parades really are just a showcase of skin and strange. I agree that it's the exact opposite of the message we need to send. What gyrating in public wearing feathers and speedo has to do with pride to begin with is beyond me. The thing about it is that these parades are what usually does get the biggest amount of media attention and if you've ever been to one you know how completely absurd and straight out lewd they can be. Every one that I've been to I've seen people pulling out their members and letting random guys feel them up (sometimes more) and there's usually a lot of drugs. It gives the opposition to gay rights all the firepower they need as well as a firm conviction about what they're doing.

I just tried to read the several pages of this from which I left off... but I'm confused. I think some posts got deleted or I just skimmed over them before or something but whatever. I don't really know where you guys are in the conversation now but I'd just like to say: believing that a part of who your friends are, who someone, anyone, is is wrong... is wrong. It is hurtful and terrible. You recognize that this is just who we are and yet you still dislike it. I'm sorry, you can't enjoy us for every part except that one. It's kind of a take it or leave it kind of deal.

I respect everyone's right to an opinion. You may have an opinion... but I do believe there are right and wrong opinions especially dealing with human worth and value. We are all equal and we deserve to be treated as such. Sexuality is a genetic trait. Disliking someone's __(genetic trait)__ is like disliking someone's skin color (which is a genetic trait as well). What kind of person would you be if you said "I like every part of her just fine except her dark skin?" If I heard someone say that in public I'd go OFF on them.

I have less than good opinions about some people or a group of people, but I never voice them. And that's my opinion... if your opinion hurts people, keep it to yourself. And the law should protect us all equally, regardless of whatever genetic traits you do or do not like. I do suggest though everyone look at people for their personalities and not their genetic traits and try to accept EVERY genetic trait.

*disclaimer every "you" or form of "you" here is generic general "you" not specific "you"*

Yes, I totally agree. The two I've been to was AWFUL. I asked the coordinator if this year's "Triangle Pride Parade" could be different, less flashy and more normal people and he told me I was missing the point of pride parades and giving into the conservatives by wanting to look and behave like them. I think he missed the point.

you're welcome.
Yeah when I've complained about it I got pretty much the same kind of response. Selling out and what not, hiding who we are blah blah blah. How often besides the parades do you see some chubby guy wearing nothing, but a diaper acting like cupid? Or someone walking down the street in ass-less chaps and a rainbow wig? That's not who they are at all. We treat the parades like halloween and then when anyone one has anything negative to say about it we shriek about stifiling idenity and all that. Please.
