Much in the way our beloved Buffy had her "dream" job at the Doublemeat Palace, I'm sure there are a few of us out there who have had the great fortune of holding down a nightmare....or maybe just humiliating....job.

I'll fess up. I've never held the greatest jobs in the world, but the one that really stands out was my very first job ever.

Aaahh, the memories.

Allow me to paint you a true picture of horror. 😛

It was my first ever summer job when I was all of 16. The place....POPEYE'S FRIED CHICKEN.
The minimum wage back then was a whopping $3.80 an hour. Yeah baybee...big money!

I trained in many aspects of the job, from food preparation, to loading supplies, to being the friggin' janitor.....but fate played a cruel hand one afternoon when one of my managers came up to me and offered me a chance to "move up".
The proposition? I would be given a staggering 50-cent raise, if I agreed to wear a costume for two hours every day, and go out on the sidewalk to distribute the restaraunt's flyers. Well...me being the enterprising young IDIOT that I was, I readily agreed.

Mistake.

Now, allow me to describe this infernal costume. Yes, it was a Popeye costume.
It consisted of a huge plastic Popeye head (and when I say huge, I mean like Mardi Gras huge) complete with corn cob smoking pipe, a black and blue sailor suit with exaggerated bell-bottom pants, fake, oversized foam rubber forearm muscles with anchor tattoos painted on them, and huge size friiggin' 30 foam rubber shoes.

The suit was designed for a person of at least six feet six inches in height. At age 16, I was not exactly a tall fella...in fact, I was all of five foot one inch tall back then, so you can imagine what this suit looked like on me, especially the head. Ah, but what a sad sight that was.

It was the middle of summer, and it was blazing hot outside, making it about 1000 degrees inside the suit.
Also, I wasn't the only guy to wear the suit. There was a guy that would wear it and stand outside before me. This guy would come in, take the suit off and hand it to me for my stint. And let me tell ya, that dude would be sweating in that thing before it got to me, so the suit would be very damp, and mucho mucho mucho SMELLY! I'm talking FUNKY! I mean really FUNKAYYYYY!
No...you don't understand...I'm talking ODERIFIC BAYBEE!!! I'm talkin' play that funky music white boy funkayyyyy!!!!!

But, I didn't know any better to refuse. I thought I'd get fired if I didn't go through with it, and I didn't want to get fired, so I wore the suit.

So now here I am wearing this disgustingly putrid suit which did not fit me, trying to keep my heavy Popeye head from tipping over to the side and possibly taken MY head with it, walking (more like flopping) down the street towards 42nd Street and Broadway, which was where I was to stand and distribute the flyers.

To add to the indignity, the heat was stifling, and on top of that people would walk past me and punch the Popeye head, causing it to spin around 180 degrees.
Children would come up and stomp on my size 30 Popeye feet. People were making really bad spinach jokes. People would make comments about the bad smell emanating from the suit...a smell which I did NOT create!

Ah...but worst of all....I would have foreign tourists coming up to me begging to have their pictures taken with me.
There would be little French and Japanese kids climbing all over me vying for a good camera position....as well as their whole families. Man, I was mortified that I had to stand around all these folks smelling as bad as I did.

I must have been in a million pictures that week. To this day, somewhere in various parts of the world, there are pictures of me in a bad-fitting Popeye suit, sitting in people's photo albums. Yes, my humiliation actually went international. Yay me. I rock. Oh yeah. I rock hard. Pffft!!!!

Ah, but then there were the other tourists, the two or three Japanese entourages that would only walk up, snap a picture of me, then stand there pointing and laughing in Japanese.

Oh yeah, Ha-ha, very funny. Laugh at the misshappen Popeye, you Japanese mother (expletive deleted). 😛

Aaah, but I devised a response. Each time they did that, I would point at the sky and scream "GODZILLAAAAAA!!!!!" really loudly under my Popeye head. And they would actually get this puzzled look on their faces and look where I was pointing. Petty, yes, but satisfying to me at the time. 😛

Anyhoo, I did the Popeye suit thing for about a week. Subsequently I got fed up with the whole deal and quit my job. I was there a total of three months. I never worked at a fast food place again. Not just because of the suit thing, but also because during my stint there I saw a whole LOT of unsanitary and dangerous practices. That's why I don't trust the food at fast food places to this day....except maybe for White Castle.

Go ahead, kiddies....try and top THAT one. I know there are some horror stories out there. Spill. 😛😛

my first summer job, way back in the day... jesus, was that over 15 years ago... egads... was working in a crisp factory down in the local town...

that's chip factory for you Americans out there...

basically i worked in the quality control segment of the conveyor belt... ok, sounds fancy and cool... not so... basically i stood there in line with 6 other guys and we watched the crisps / chips go by on the conveyor... if we saw a black or dodgy looking one, we took it off and threw it in the bin... that was the extent of the job

standing by a moving line of crisps / chips for 7 to 8 hours per day, picking out the dodgy ones and throwing them away... seriously

M

Lmao! No I can't top your story and maybe I'm glad for that... or maybe it's just cause I have worked within a fast food chain ;P

My worst job was as a security guard, that job wasn't strictly awful (though mind you people are ruuude), but for this open house event at the Opera house I somehow got thrown in to fill for one of the guides... yeah... that was a swell idea...

The thing is I knew nothing about this building, I had a note with some facts I could spew out about the places we walked through so that at least it looked like I knew what I was doing. However facts wasn't the most important thing that day... they might have wanted to give me a map!

See somewhere along the tour I ended up leading my group into the basement, where we got lost.... like really lost and had to wander around for frigging ever. We ended up visiting sights like the boiler room and I had to admit, with some embarrasment, that I had no idea where we were or what I was doing.

The whole thing ended up well enough, we got found by another guide (also filling in and about to get lost btw) and we all managed to surface with more than a few disgruntled people in our trail but at least all of them still with us. And hey, isn't that what a tour is all about... making it out alive 😉

LOL OM3!! I just laughed so hard reading that! I can totally picture it, and it's sooooo hilarious!!

My worst job ever was as a "secretary" at this non-profit organization. I interviewed for the position of assistant to one of the department directors. I was hired in, and the day I reported for work the big boss informed me that my job description was being "rewritten" and that my job was going to include a little more than what was told to me during the interview process. I thought this meant more money, so I was cool with it. WRONG! I ended up doing the work of 4 different positions for $7.50 an hour. I was PISSED! I had left AT&T to come work this place, and I only did about 1/4th of the work at AT&T that I did at that place- and I was paid $14.75 an hour by the time I left AT&T! I stayed stressed to the max ALL the time at that job, and I was never so happy as the day my husband gave me permission to quit.

Uhm.. I was translator for a Bosnian FC Barcelona Fan Club. It was an ok job, great pay (too great), but it was SO stressful, because they could just call me in the middle of the night and say that I have to translate 4 or 5 articles, and I had to do it immediately. And sometimes while I was sitting in school I would receive a message from my boss saying that he has sent me something to translate.. So yea.. Great pay really, but it was so stressful, because apart from my own school stuff I had to translate 10-15 articles daily.

Does 4 years in the U S Navy count? Otherwise, I've only had two jobs in my whole life, the first being working with my dad's house moving crew, in which I actually once dropped a house while underneath it, and working with Georgia Power Company until I officially retired last August.

Actually, most of my time in the Navy wasn't too bad. I loved the travel and got to see a lot of foreign countries, but the last few months were spent in the Tomkin Gulf with the Vietnamese shooting at us. That was pretty stressful, especially when we got hit and almost sank. Luckily, we were near enough to another destroyer to have them Tow us back to Subic Bay. Details of the incident are included here

if anyone might be interested, primarily in the final sections, "Return To Pacific Ocean Operations," "Struck By Underwater Explosions," and "Unfit For Further Naval Service."

Dropped a house while underneath it?

holy hell dude, you must be buff... talk about slayer strength lol

I worked as an Asst. Manager at Little Caesars Pizza; fifty miles away from my house. I had to get up at 6:00 every morning to make sure I got there by 9:00. Wasn't reimbursed for gas which at one hundred miles a day is pretty bad. Plus I only made .25 cents more than minimum wage. Due to our low revenue I was the only person from 9:00 to 5:00 when I got off. In that time I had to; take the deposit to the bank, complete the morning paperwork, run the store all by myself, make all the dough/sauce for the next day.

The reason I put up with this is because I was being trained to take over a new store being built right by the local college. One day driving home I crashed my car and broke my neck in three places. Took me six weeks to heal and by then my manager/best friend had quit and moved to Washington. The only store with an open Asst. Manager position was the one I'd previously worked at. Working for the same manager that I had previously reported to the president of the company for making sexual advances on one of our underage employees.

Sure enough he canned me within a few weeks of being back and I was given no recourse because he convinced one of our female employees to claim I cornered her in the walk in with a knife....

....and when it got slow I had to wear the Little Caesars costume to rally the workers.

oh shit, i have worked some really bad jobs. I have so many terrible stories to tell that I seriously don't know where to start. I'll just let you know that I have worked full time since I was 15 and a lot of that was fast food.

I guess a lot of my good horror stories come from working at a bar. Poo, wee and vomit aplenty. Funnily enough though it was not the worst job that ive ever. Actually, I loved it. Great people, great food, amazing beer. When I have my internet back I'll come back and tell you some stories that will make you guys
totally cringe!

You're officially on my good side now missy; an Irishman loves bar workers like Charlie Sheen loves coke and ladies of non-existent virtue.

My friend refuses to serve me at the bar because I'm always channeling Olaf when I talk to her.

"Barmaid; fetch me your heartiest ale and some plump baby heads!"

I want to be on your good side too! I'm a bar girl in a pub!
OM3 that is hee-larious!!!

I have never worked in a fast food chain, but I have worked in fast food: at a concession stand at a historical park/village. I did that many summers, and even though it was minimum wage, we had fun. I dunno, I can't think of any horrible, crappy jobs I've had, plenty of low-wage jobs, but we always managed to have fun. In high school I was an usher at a performing arts center, I worked with fun people plus I got to see some neat performances/plays/operas etc. In college I was an "ambassador"- we called potential students. That wasn't fun for me though, I hate the cold-calling gig.

I think the most interesting job I've had is in home health. I'm a speech pathologist, and have mostly worked in the public schools for the last 17 yrs. But I did supplement that income doing home health speech therapy. I went to a lot of different homes: in the best and worst parts of town. I've been in homes where bugs crawled all over my feet & where my patients weren't being taken care of. Where I had to fight for a place to sit because there was so much crap in the house. Where I was afraid for my own safety. But there were some really great families too. And the pay was the best I've ever had!

My worst job? Working custodial in the Tragic Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Florida.

"It's a Small World" on a continuous loop, "protein spills", the hideous white jump suit, terrifying Texans screaming at me because I didn't know what a litrine was, 18 hour shifts...it was not pretty.

You really don't want to know. Also, I'm fairly sure I can get sued if I tell you anyway! lol

lmao, and I'm with OM3... I don't think I wanna know what a protein spill is either...
My worst job was doing a paper round in the wind, rain and snow and having to lift very heavy newspapers with supplements in on saturdays. I didn't get a trolley so had to deliver the papers in two journeys, which made it take twice as long. If I didn't have my iPod with me I would have gone insane.

My first job was at McDonalds. I was 17. And yes, it was awful. Believe me when I tell you, I can completely relate to Buffy in Doublemeat Palace. All the managers were FAR too chipper and took everything WAY to seriously. I remember a manager telling me, as I was wrapping a Big and Tasty, that it was "truly a thing of beauty." No kidding.

I worked the open shift, meaning I had to get up at 3:30am to be there by 4:30am. Mind you, this was when I was in high school. I'd have to go to class straight after work. We'd need to have the store open and functioning by 5:30am. I spent the first part of my shift cooking a seemingly endless amount of eggs, then the second part taking orders in the drive-through. I smelled like fries at the end of everyday and the grease in the air made my skin break out. The customers were jerks sometimes, and I almost got fired once for telling one of them off. I worked there for a year before I thankfully got a better job.

The good part? Working there really modivated me to do well in school. There were women there who had been working there for 25 years. I swore I wouldn't end up like them, lol.

What's really ironic is that now I work as a Youth Employment Counselor (a job I love), and I refer my clients to apply at McDonalds all the time. They're one of the only companies around here that will hire people under the age of 18, and without any prior job experience. I always tell my clients to work there for like 6 months, work hard, and get a good reference. That's priceless.

A speech pathologist? That sounds interesting. What age group do you work with? Do you help kids with learning disabilities or what?

You send those poor kids to their doom! Why?? WHY??!! ;):p:p
When I was in high school I had various jobs aplenty. I worked as a Soccer referee for little kids, a Softball umpire for little kids, I worked at Dunkin' Donuts as a server, as a camp counselor for 2nd graders, as a ski instructer...

But one of the worst parts of a job was when I worked at an ice skating rink. I mostly handed out rental ice skates, which wasn't too bad. Had to disinfect them often, but that still wasn't bad. What was bad? Cleaning the locker rooms after PeeWee hockey games. It was just rank.

If I hate working, can I say that all of my jobs suck? I sometimes hate the job itself, but like the people I work with, so it affects my decision. Also, when I sold cheese and salads at the supermarket, I hated the feeling of being sort of like a robot. People coming to you with "I want this, I want that, bigger, smaller, that's too expensive..." and there was so much work to do "behind the scenes". I hated the feeling it gave me. Though slicing the cheese with the slicer machine is pretty fun!

At a bar in the kitchen. The work itself wasn't that bad, but the boss was just ridiculous. I don't understand people who throw tantrums at all. It's been six years and I'm still annoyed with the way this guy flipped out over every little thing. It was my first (and only) night working so I didn't know where anything was or their specific way of cooking things, but I was just thrown in there with no training and the boss just expected me to know it already or something. I think that if someone spoke to me now the way he did I would break his nose.

Gordon Ramsey is Clark Kent compared to this guy. He was unbelievable. It was the most immature thing I have ever seen.

Your boss was Gordon Ramsay? :p
Oh good Lord. I worked at Burger King for 3 years. THREE YEARS. No, I was not a manager. Just a stupid teenager. From ages 16-19 I worked there for no more than $6.95 an hour. I started at $6/hr. I don't even have the energy to describe what went on THERE.

Then I worked at Dairy Queen. Imagine coming home every night smelling like rotten milk. And, like Buffy, the smell came off, after a few thousand showers.

Then there was the gas station that also sold ice cream. Why buy ice cream from a gas station?! Again with the rotten milk smell. Only now, it was coupled with gasoline as well. There, I almost tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder because my manager didn't let it defrost it properly. Then, she told me I was useless and took me off the schedule. I went to the corporate headquarters (which happened to be in my town) and talked to the main guy of the corporation. Short story, I got her fired, but I refused to take my job back.

Then there was Target, where I worked in the dressing room and answered all inbound calls. Retail + Operator = double plus ungood.

And then there was the call center where I was berated day after day by callers, and my superiors, and fired in a really bad fashion. I was told I was late one day, but they wouldn't tell me what day. I doubt I was late, but they'd probably just forge the paperwork if I debated it, so whatever.

And the sad thing? Those are ALL the jobs I've ever had. I've never had a good one, never had one I liked.

I don't think I've ever really had a 'worst job ever', but my first job wasn't all that great.

For three years, from when I was 16, I worked as a dishwasher for a local cafe/restaurant. It wasn't awful, but having to wash so many coffee mugs, glasses, plates, and silver wear by hand for eight ours a day three days a week wasn't great. And when I say 'by hand' I do mean by hand - a sink, hot water, dish soap and a scrubbing brush. And no rubber gloves.

And a boss who constantly referred to me, to everyone who asked who I was, 'Aly, the dish pig'.

haha some very interesting stories here! specially yours OM haha

Well for me I would have to say that the very worst job I ever had was at Gamestop. Selling games. Yes. I was hired as a manager and I thought everything was awesome. Until I had to train a new manager. That's when the nightmare happened. Not only did I have to train someone wayyyyyyyy older than me (35 years older than me, and thought he knew more about games than I did), but he was also getting paid a whole $3 more than I was. WTF?

Then there was the whole shipment crap. Working at Gamestop during the holidays is the worst. Especially when you work by yourself. I used to work 9-5 by myself and had to take customers, do inventory counts AND receive shipments of games and consoles. The least I ever got was around 65 boxes in a day, all of which I had to receive, gut, price, and put out before the end of my shift.

Then things started getting ugly. My boss' wife cheated on him. So he got really depressed and couldn't eat and couldn't work without somehow being reminded of her. So I told him I would take care of his duties until he got better. I thought it would be a good way for me to learn more and get to know all the in and outs of the job, and I thought that if he saw me dedicating myself to the company to that extent, I might get promoted to store manager. NOT. 3 months went by and nothing happened. He would clock in, leave for 8 hours, and clock back out when he was going home. One of the other managers got upset that I was being used so much, so she called human resources to get have someone sent and have the store audited anonymously. So someone was sent to do a secret shop and saw that my boss wasn't in the store for several hours, but was indeed clocked in, that and other bad things as well. So he was given a first and final warning. After about two days, he accused me of being the one that called HR on him, and he had arranged for me to be transferred to a store completely out of my way. I really didn't want to transfer. I tried to stay in that store as long as I could. But then my boss stopped scheduling me more than 7 hours a week and ended up demoting me for no reason. So I ended up transferring as management to the store he originally wanted me to transfer.

That store wasn't any better. It was the most disgusting store I had ever set foot in. I was the only one that worked and I slowly started getting the store to look more presentable and then once it did, they stopped scheduling me. I ended up quitting.

Me siguen cogàendo de pendeja 🙁
