Angel made Buffy watchable

I think they should have talked. He basically made it a done deal and did it 'for her own good'. It's OK for him to break up with her for himself. It's not really OK for her to decide what is good for her. Maybe she was being overly romantic to think she could live a life of celibacy (I do think so) but adults who have relationships decide things together and DISCUSS things... otherwise it's not really a relationship, it's a dictatorship.

If he'd said "I can't do this, it hurts too much" that wouldn't have been patronizing, that would have been honest. But just as he decided to lie to cordy when she came back and decided to go to Wolfram and Hart and wipe his friend's minds without their consent or knowledge, he decided for her. That was patronizing and autocratic. It's not a healthy way to relate. His leaving was a good thing. HOW he did it was not.

Well I understand your argument, it’s one I’m very familiar with. But your position seems to be predicated upon Buffy’s coming to the realization on her own that Angel should leave so she could have the normal life she seemed to want.

But Buffy is rather stubborn (one of the things I love about her) and when he brought these up she said “I don’t care about that.” So I don’t know that she would have come to the same conclusion. Or at least she doesn’t come to that conclusion until after Angel tells her that he is leaving.

Hummm I can't agree with that. Buffy was watrchable beacuse of Buffy and all her relationships. I completely adore Bangel but I don't think they were the center or the heart of the show. Buffy is at the center of it all and I think the show is more about friendship and family than love relationship in my opinion.

i love angel and all, but i mean we've rewatched season 1 of btvs and sorry but angel in s1 would make me call the police and probably move the hell outta of sunnydale ahahha. i still laugh at the scene "i have no breath" SERIOUSLY DUDE. like you were less useless when you were not on the show haha. i love angel in s2 and s3 and when he got his own show well. well-deserved i must say. i get it big first love and etc...but they've all better as loners. that's the destiny of champions and heroes.

Hmm...I just got to wondering (before breakfast), if romantic love makes a character more interesting, then would Ripley in Aliens have been a lot more interesting making kissy-face with someone? (Or...becoming lovers with an alien "not like other aliens" 😛 ).

Just thinking "out loud" in that Wishverse Buffy was a lot more like Ripley, though I have seen "girly girl" characters like Buffy in being "girly" (keeping in mind here that I don't see "meek little girlie girl" required to by girly as whoever put that into BTVS: Phases, as if Princess Buffy in Halloween is the "pure girl" all helpless and childlike) who were interesting without putting a boyfriend into the mix (while I can think of much better examples, some well known examples would include plenty of Star Trek characters). But that could be me, and I'm not the target audience. Going by advertisements and magazines at the counter I most certainly am not (in that, and other ways).

well the last bit was more of a joke haha. but i do believe that at some point love(the chemical reactions, the need to procreate) turns into trustworthy friendship and companionship(that's why i love s3 relationship of bangel). when i say i don't believe in "meant to be together" i just want to say that these things...should be a choice. love is a choice.

but really didn't anyone else laugh when angel gave buffy her jacket? like really you just walk around in that tank top really. or stayed in her room and hide in her closet? I MEAN IN THE CLOSET. it was ted bundy level of creepy ahahah

Oh I've long said that S1 Angel comes off more as creepy. I'm on your side on that one for sure.
