Bangel in the Buffy reunion

Glad someone giffed this as I wanted to discuss it but wasn't 100% sure what they were saying.

I'm confused in general about David's attitude here. Was he just being playful or he was confused with SMG's answer at that point?

That part of the reunion felt kind of chaotic to me and I think David was just uncomfortable in general and tried to joke to make things lighter. That's how I could make sense of it.

Thoughts?

Also, Michelle is being adorable in the first gif!

I think David was maybe saying that James had to prefer Spike and Buffy, so he couldn't be on the same page with Sarah. But mostly, SMG kept mentioning that she wasn't choosing between David and James and David is just making fun of that. You know, he told James that JM wanted Sarah to choose him and joked with Sarah that he was a bit upset she didn't chose David. After that, Sarah replies that she just chose him and he thanks her.

I think David always jokes. He must be really used to interviews and seems to get along well with everyone, so he's probably not uncomfortable. Maybe he's not having the time of his life - I mean, he wasn't even in the later seasons so probably didn't remember/know some of the things they talked about like Hush, The Body, OMWF - but he seemed okay. He spoke positively of the experience on twitter and Instagram...

Btw, has someone giffed the part where Sarah and Charisma talked about David being naked all the time?

Apparently, David shared three photos on his Instagram post: one of the whole cast, his solo cover and one of him and Sarah!!!

I love those two. Bless that friendship.

Thank you for clarifying that. I saw some people say that he blew her off when she said she picked Angel and I don't get it? Oh and I meant he seemed uncomfortable during that the Angel/Spike thing. Like he was joking with James to make fun of the whole thing. And this just reminded me that he's always evasive in general when it comes to ships talk. He doesn't seem to like/care much about ships (or is it just me?), and doesn't discuss it like other people from cast and crew does. I feel like I barely know his feelings on Bangel (post-shows).

I thought he did relatively well during the post season 3 conversations. He was even the one who brought up OMWF and it kind of made me smile.

I haven't seen any gifs relating to the naked thing yet but it'll probably come up soon. I saw some people freaking out over that part of the interview a lot on tumblr so I don't doubt it'll eventually get giffed.

Also, did David and Michelle know each other before this? The whole thing gave me the impression that they did at least a little bit, even if they were barely on the show at the same time (Forever, End of Days, Chosen) and only had 1 season together on the same network.

OMG I HADN'T SEEN THIS ONE

I saved articles about that as proof... Most are transcripts because the actual interviews and articles are kind of lost, but they seemed genuine and had sources.

From: Angel and Cordelia Stake Out the Chat !
"From Greta : Your official verdict : What did it mean that Angel said Buffy’s name during dream sex with Cordy ?
I think we’ve established that his one true love is Buffy, obviously. So, when that occurred, it was a testament to his feelings. It’s not the sex that makes him happy ; it’s the feeling. He can have sex, but he can’t be truly happy.
From drew : How do you feel about Angel and Cordy ?
It has been really weird, because she’s carrying my son’s baby. So, we’re just letting that unfold. We’re just going to see where that’s heading. It’s not very good right now. But in the past, she has been very comforting for Angel. So, we’ll see."

From: David Boreanaz - Tv Guide Magazine Scans & Transcription - Document #4546
"TVG : Were you shocked at how resistant fans were when you put Angel and Cordelia together ? Whedon : "Resistant" isn’t the word. They were chasing us through the streets with torches. They hated the idea. The Buffy-Angel [romance] has lingered. Boreanaz : The Buffy-Angel connection has got to win out [in the end]. They’re perfect together."

From: David Boreanaz - MSN Chat Transcription
"TheXmasHooker in Onstage3 asks : Do you believe Angel and Buffy are soulmates ? I mean so much time as pasted for them.
David_Boreanaz_Live says : I don’t know. I think their characters are destined for some romantic gettaway again. Those two characters may be heading back together at the end. Where they’re at in their lives they are in the same place, they’re just not together."

From: David Boreanaz - Angel Magazine Interview
"Were you pleased with the Angel-Cordy relationship ?
I really believe that Angel’s heart is with Buffy. I’ve always found the Angel-Cordelia relationship a bit strange, but it worked. There was chemistry there, but not the way it was between Angel and Buffy. I think the Angel-Cordy relationship was just a mirror to what the Angel-Buffy relationship was to him."

From: David Boreanaz - Starburst October 2003 Interview
"But while the coming together of both of Whedon’s main talents may have brought closure to Buffy, Boreanaz is adamant that Angel’s and Miss Summers’s story is far from over.
"I don’t think there will ever be a closure between these two characters," he says with a smile. "Mythologicaly speaking, I think that they are two types of characters that live on in the universe and I think that’s what’s so beautiful and special about the two of them. I think that lore and that interest will keep the two alive, so I don’t think there’s really any kind of end to it.""

From: David Boreanaz - Angel Season 5 - Thewb.com Interview
"The WB : Is Angel ever going to find true love again ?
DB : "Well, Angel’s love life is very sporadic. One moment of true happiness can lead to many souls being killed off very fast. (Laughing) It’s up and down. He doesn’t really have a prescription for it. His one true love is Buffy. Always will be, and, uh, it’s going to be difficult for him to find somebody who can top that."
The WB : But Angel will try to top that, right ?
DB : "Who knows ? We’re definitely going to experiment with him in the fifth season. We’re going to be throwing characters at Angel. None have worked, so far. At least not like they have worked with Buffy."

From: David Boreanaz - Highlights from David’s appearance in Brighton, August 2003
"How will Angel manage without Cordelia ?
I have to say it will be very difficult, as far as the character is concerned. [It was] more of an attachment than love, I think. Somebody who [he] could identify with as a warrior, somebody who was very characterful and strong, confident.
Not as truly deep, I think, as love, but Cordelia, for Angel, was a pivotal part of his understanding of having a son, understanding who he is and his place in the world.
That relationship did kick off, but I think there’s a misunderstanding between the two of them that’s not been resolved. Where else it’s going to go I don’t know, she’s in a coma. Joss Whedon, ha ha ha.
She’ll be back.
If you could do an Angel film, what would it be like ?
Shooting a film version of Angel would be pretty amazing, the stuff you could do.
What I would like to see, actually, would be to do for Joss to do some sort of Angel/Buffy character thing. It would be interesting to see those characters somehow end up [together]. It would be tough to do, because his character didn’t find Buffy until later on."

6) Regarding C/A : Relationship with Cordy is "interesting" and "not as deep". Angel has moved on although he’s unhappy she’s in a coma.

"European Event 2003 (August 29th - 31st) - Report II
The questions start to come back to Angel again and the Cordelia/Angel relationship. When asked if they’ll ever get together, David’s answer is, "Well, Cordelia’s in a coma. Angel’s dead, but he’s not that freaky ! And Angel’s true love is Buffy." However, he describes the relationship between Cordelia and Connor as "kinda spooky"."

Okay...that's all I have! I knew this articles would be useful someday...

David always said that Buffy and Angel loved each other. He never said they should end up together (save for one interview where I remember he said "We know they'll end up together"), but he always said that Buffy was Angel's true love. He is a bit tight lipped about Buffy and Angel in some interviews, but I think it's because he doesn't like interviewers talking about Buffy instead of Bones. With the fans, he isn't tight lipped. There's one convention in which someone asked him who loved Buffy the most and he answered that Buffy and Angel's love was eternal and that trumps everything...Remember Sarah's tweet about Buffy being 30 or something and David's tweet that Angel must be 280 then? That seemed to imply that he saw Buffy and Angel has a package deal. He never said anything about Cangel that implied he liked that ship. In fact, he often said it wasn't on the same level as Buffy and Angel, and that it was a bit weird.

Also, did David and Michelle know each other before this? The whole thing gave me the impression that they did at least a little bit, even if they were barely on the show at the same time (Forever, End of Days, Chosen) and only had 1 season together on the same network.

They did I think. I don't know how but there are a couple of pictures of the two of them attending the same party or wedding post shows.

Oh wow I just saw these articles. I am going to save them. I see the quotes but never had the sources its great to have that in the vault !

Thank you!! I knew you were the right person to ask! I'll start reading them all now!

And have you seen the picture I added to my previous post? (only asking because the lack of reaction is surprising me 🙂 )

Wow! Is that my reputation? 😉 You're welcome. I quoted the parts that spoke of Buffy and Angel (and also Cangel for comparison). The rest of it has to do with other stuff.

I added that picture to my post as well! I commented on it. I had already seen it. It's awesome. I love their friendship. It's the gift that keeps on giving 🙂

Yep, as far as I'm concerned it is! You know your stuff and you're very well documented I think.

I just read the whole thing and yeah it does seem like he was all Bangel. He seemed open to Cangel but not a fan of the execution (which is basically how I feel). Also, I love the fact that his favorite episodes all make my list of top 10 episodes. I approve of his choices. 🙂

omg, we both did the same thing lol and I was clueless about it. Oh well, never too much smg/db.

Thanks. I agree with you on everything :)
After reading all those comments...I think I might like Cangel more now (weirdly).
but now looking at it from the perspective that Angel needed Cordelia in his life because she got him in many ways and he respected her growth and stuff. He didn't love her romantically but there was that connection. But on the other hand Cordy loved Angel but he was kinda unattainable in many ways. But in the end it didn't matter, because loving him made her a better person.
Does that make sense to anyone? I'm not really a shipper type.

I think I like your way of looking at it. I have a irrational hatred of Cangel, but this way is much more palatable for me :)

It makes sense to me. I do enjoy Angel and Cordy's connection a lot and I feel like she does get him pretty well and he's a positive presence in her life. It just doesn't feel romantic to me (the execution of it) and I much prefer seeing them as family than significant others.

Okay, don't want to start a ship war or something of the like, because we can't do that here, but I disagree.

Angel needed Cordelia like he needed Wesley or Faith and that doesn't make me ship Fangel or Wesley/Angel. Angel's need for Cordelia is overrated. It's no greater than his need for Wesley. It's just a friend type of need, but it's often described as an intense I-would-die-without-you type of need. Where's the proof of that? Season 1, Doyle was more needed until he died. Season 2? Where was Cordy when Angel needed help? Season 3? He was just fine without Cordelia in all those episodes she was gone. Season 4? Angel did fine in the end. Cordelia was needed but a normal, I'll-be-fine-without-you type of need, that I feel is constantly exaggerated. Their connection doesn't come close to Angel's connection to Buffy, Connor or Darla.

And I disagree that loving Angel made Cordelia a better person. She was on her way to becoming a good person on Buffy, and Angel, Wes, Doyle and Gunn and all of those friendships were important to her and to her journey, as well as her visions. Cordy was her best as a person in season 2 and she was apart from Angel most of the season. In season 3, Cordelia becomes more arrogant and self centered, partly because of her "love" for Angel which isolated her from her friends and from the people she's meant to help.

Oh god yes!!! All of this . Wesley I feel was a much closer friend to Cordelia, who she promptly forgot about as it became more important to be Angels comfort blanket and personal cheerleader.

Angel needed Cordelia like he needed Wesley or Faith and that doesn't make me ship Fangel or Wesley/Angel.

Well, I never ship Cangel romantically but I ship 'friendships' like Fangel and Buffy/Giles. Like I said I'm not really a shipper.

But I can like Cangel as an 'almost' ship, something that never really came off due to circumstance. It wasn't executed well, and I never really bought it but something could've happened. I can see it more from Cordelia's view that Angel's; her having feelings for him feels more natural than Angel loving her (at least romantically)

Angel's need for Cordelia is overrated.

I'm not so sure. I can count many times where Angel confided in Cordelia more than any other person; starting way back right at the end of 'Somnambulist' right on through 'Judgement' and on into S3.
She wasn't there for everything of course but she has 'big' moments with him.

It's just a friend type of need, but it's often described as an intense I-would-die-without-you type of need.

But I'm not characterizing it that way; it isn't that intense, like Bangel is. It's more; they both grow and change around each other.
Cordelia's shallow lust for Angel turns into admiring him and wanting to help him because he's awesome.
And Angel gets to see Cordelia grow from high school girl to somebody who really struggles with a burden.
As I recall that's why he fell in love with Buffy; he saw her struggle and her also strength., but from a distance. With Cordelia he saw it upclose; that growth in her character.

But again, I'm not saying 'romance', I'm simply saying 'important', note-worthy. Angel came to feel that he needed Cordelia because she had been there through some tough times and had stuck with him. I'm not saying it was true, only that I can see how Angel might come to believe it was true by the time 'You're Welcome' comes around.
Angel always has a need for someone in his corner; sometimes that person was Doyle or Faith (comics) but for a long time (3 ish seasons) that was Cordy.

Lol, maybe I'm not making any sense.

And I disagree that loving Angel made Cordelia a better person. She was on her way to becoming a good person on Buffy

Well Cordelia was a good person over on Buffy but hanging around Angel- not just the visions- is what made her a champion.
Doyle was atoning for past sins, Wesley's job was demon hunting/Watcher-ing, Gunn had been fighting vamps all his life.
Arguably Cordelia still had the weakest connection to that whole supernatural underworld but it was helping Angel that set her on that path. So while being around Angel made them all better (just like with Buffy and her friends in a way) it's really most noticeable with Cordelia.

I don't really get the confusion over David during that part in the interview. If anyone has seen him in these types of settings (like Bones cast at Paley for example) before then it's no shocker that he often jokes around. Especially when it comes to shipping and stuff. He was clearly joking around with James (he was looking in his direction not Sarah's the whole time) making fun of the whole thing. And then Sarah reminded him, hey I picked you. This is why I said Sarah and David remind me of Emily and David.

As for Cordy and Angel. I do think their connection is totally overrated. Cordy was needed because her bluntness would counterbalance Angel's thickheadedness. And she often didn't let him off the hook when it looked like he would draw back and brood too much. Since the cast was so small at the beginning she was also a link to humanity. It's why they became a sort of little family with Cordy and Angel as annoying little sister and brooding older brother.

But by the time the cast expands and especially once Cordy and Angel go OOC for romance/parenthood purposes (S3 I'm looking at you), Cordy's function is pretty much down to family. As for their romantic feelings...I'm still not sure to this day if it wasn't something that was planted by Jasmine. It literally came out of nowhere the same Season that Cordy needed to ascend. And it makes no sense character wise for either Angel or Cordy. They both know the Angel/Buffy drama and it was literally the same situation. Nothing had changed in Angel's case so why go there again knowing where it leads? Cordy was happy with Groo until she suddenly wasn't. Cordy also knows the problems that come with a relationship with Angel. Not only that but she has no interest in being with a vampire. Never mind that she could never truly love Angel because she won't accept Angelus. But he is part of the package, always.

I know he jokes a lot in interviews, etc. and I did mention it in my original post that he was joking around. I guess I was confused because of how I saw the interactions interpreted by others who said David was being a jerk, blowing off SMG's, etc. It didn't come across like that to me but like I mentioned earlier that whole part felt chaotic when I watched it so when I read those comments I felt like I missed something and I couldn't tell 100% what was going on.

But it seems it was really simple : David was joking and there's nothing to understand. I'm more than ok with that.

Don't see why it should bother you if other people think that way. Those who say this nonsense are the same ones who were pissed at him when he said 'no reunion', have never seen David in cast interviews like this and you can bet an even bigger part are from the anti-Angel/David/Bangel brigade looking for any excuse to slam him. Let them think this way if they need it to make themselves feel better. These same people are aware of David and Sarah and their social media palooza and friend status. So saying that David blew Sarah off...can't imagine them being friends if he did that.

You're right. I shouldn't care. But after an emotional day yesterday it got to me. I think it was all the positive and happiness for pretty all day and then the day ended with a burst of negativity and it tainted the whole thing a bit for me. But I'm ignoring it now and after a good night's sleep I'll be back to normal.
