Bangel Vs. Spuffy... Have you ever switched?

I'm like, bro, at the end of the say this is a FICTIONAL SERIES WITH FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. This is not real life. I am not in a relationship with a man like Spike in real life.

No matter the fandom, no matter how many years have passed, people will continue to fight and argue over fictional ships. There's something poetic and annoying about this.

Of course there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, certain ships are just horrible, but c'mon Buffy The freaking Vampire Slayer?

How about we all agree we like Buffy Summers and kiss. Hopefully that's not too much to ask for 🥲

Think about it, we really don't know anyone here. One of you guys could be the type to put milk b4 cereal, like I really don't know. I can't judge someone based on their online posts about a vampire show...

Adding more of my two cents here...I don't think Spike redeemed himself. But unfortunately, even if I wanted to give him more time he kinda ****ing died. Wish there was a s8 to explore this more.

Does anyone else like watching Spuffy fan edits? I love watching them, not a huge fan of the fanfics though. I've read a couple Spuffy fanfics...but nobody can imitate Josh Whedon's charm completely.

He didn't "****ing die" for long if you've ever seen the spinoff. You're missing pretty critical information.

Have you not seen Angel or read the comics ???

He was brought back to life in Angel Season 5, I dunno if you saw it

I still don't like Bangel, but there is no question that the Angel and Buffy loved each other @Joan the Vampire Slayer Yes, Angel did stalk Buffy, just like Spike did in seasons 5-7. Both are predators, so this isn't a surprise. Spike and Buffy never loved each other; even Spike finally admitted that. The first thing he did for her, not for him.

Spuffy, on the other hand, is the most repugnant, irredeemably vile, horrifically awful excuse for a romantic relationship it has ever been my misfortune to encounter. I won't say it's the worst around; reviews of the ongoing misogynistic horror show that's currently masquerading as a part of straight romance shows there are worse, though Spuffy does fit nicely into that category.

But, as I have said before, I don't object to people liking Spuffy. You want to go "This relationship is toxic and abusive and in no way should it be pursued in real life, but there's a ton of chemistry and Spike's hot and I love it" then that's fine. I am never going to like that, especially when it turns my entertainment about a young woman with superheroic powers into a show about an abusive male vampire. If I want to watch a woman being abused, I have the news for that.

My objection is to it being romanticised, the convoluted lengths that are gone to to make out that Spike's abuse of Buffy is "romantic." When all the arguments boil down to "It's not abuse/stalking/rape if he's hot." If Spike was played by, say, Armin Shimerman, Spuffydom would never have existed. If Spike's behaviour wouldn't be defended if he wasn't charming and attractive, then his behaviour is not romantic. It's abuse that's being romanticised because of his looks.

Agreed 100% - the sex scene in Smashed is the perfect example of romanticising Spuffy.

I NEVER justify his bad behaviour. I simply ALSO see his good behaviour and attempts to change. That matters. He is a mess. Their relationship after Buffy comes back is not a healthy one... still, there is caring there and there is good in a lot of Spike's actions... and a trajectory of change. I have seen people change after (for example) sobriety and built something good after surviving bad times. Why i love spuffy isn't the hot mess of crazy that is the time after Buffy returns from being dead, but the fact of Spike a) saving her inspite of being a demon who should not have ANY empathy b) his recognizing his need for change after he hurt her, BECAUSE he hurt her. I know a lot of men who cannot change after hurting someone. I think that a demon who can change is something remarkable.

NOTE: unlike some in the Spuffy fandom, i have ZERO use for a endgame of spuffy where Spike has no soul. Spike with no soul is not capable of being a partner with Buffy.

I do not think there's any romance in abuse. I do think there's a lot of substance in the crazy, screwed up and real feeling relationship that Spike and Buffy have after she comes back, in spite of it being more than a little toxic, and therefore unsustainable as is.

I don't see the abuse as being one-sided, btw... People keep making Buffy into a victim -- probably because they don't see Spike as a being with real feelings, but Buffy hurts him repeatedly, as she says, 'using him' and including giving him a beat down that essentially left him for dead... after he tried to save her from her own depressive need to turn herself in to the police for a murder she didn't do. Buffy NEVER makes amends for this. No one, not even a demon, deserves that kind of extreme violence, and emotional dismissal. Spike could easily have been too injured to get out of the alley and might have been in danger of dying when the sun came up. Buffy didn't give him a backward glance.

So if Buffy isn't the victim of the piece, maybe there's something more going on here? I believe that Buffy works out her pain on the body and soul of Spike, and Spike does his best AS A DEMON WITH NO PREVIOUS MORAL COMPASS to try to help her. Does it come out well? Heck no!! Does it prevent her from complete self-destruction? Definitely. I think she knows this.

I think the fact she was willing to take Dawn to be with Spike after the episode in the bathroom is disturbing, but also a sign she doesn't view it in black and white the way Xander does.

I believe the REAL, sustainable and progressively more healthy relationship was born and grew VERY SLOWLY after he came back, and they slowly rebuilt trust.

The implosion of the relationship with Giles, Dawn and the scoobies made it much easier for her to turn to Spike. She did not put them after Spike. They expected her to be a good little soldier. She chose to be a COMPLETE GENERAL -- and she viewed all of them, including herself and Spike as expendable and acted to suit. Did this go down well? No. should she have handled it more diplomatically? Probably - though frankly, the threat was great enough and her resources were non-existent. The addition of a bunch of frightened children who were rude, abusive (kennedy) and seriously not her responsibility while trying to save the world and care for Dawn with NO COUNCIL MONEY and NO WATCHER SUPPORT. I am not sure I would have let Giles dump 3 dozen people on me and leave me to scavenge for food and supplies... Just NO.

So if she turned to Spike? It wasn't an irresponsible girl turning to her abusive lover. It was someone practical turning to the one being who wasn't actively using and hurting her and stretching her thin without any regard to the personal cost of it.

Of course she would turn to Spike... he was the one person who was supporting her rather than criticizing her failure at every turn. Giles wanted it both ways... he wanted her to lead the potentials, while giving her no visibleauthority, or support and making it clear to everyone that he did not respect the authority he expected her to wield. What could he have said that would have given Kennedy the idea that she could basically spit on Buffy's shoes at her doorstep... when coming for sanctuary. But Kennedy was a vile specimen of a rich girl, so i can't blame Giles entirely. I do blame him for not upbraiding Kennedy with a Ripper moment, however. We know he is capable of being a very scary man, even to demons. Yet, he let her behaviour fester.

Yes, of course Buffy was a crap general... because she had NO TRAINING AND NO SUPPORT FROM GILES. But she saved the world anyway... with the same vampire that Giles tried to murder.

This is the same Giles that ABANDONED A SUICIDAL SLAYER who had dug out of her grave and left her to fend for herself and her grieving minor sister.. with NO MONEY or other support. She should have ALWAYS been paid -- more than Giles, more than Travers... she was the asset. They were support staff. But it's like this everywhere.. special forces get paid decently, but i suspect not as well as generals... but often, Buffy is called on to do both... she fights, she researches, she coordinates battles... Even going so far as to gather her classmates back in the fight against the mayor... yet she is essentially a slave for 8 years.

Even slaves on plantations got food, clothing and shelter in exchange for being brutalized for their lives. She was less brutalized, but them attempting to murder her at 18 so they could get a more controllable model taught her that she really could not count on them for anything... and that 'father's love' apparently went away entirely after she dug out of her grave...

And after coming back from heaven and digging out of hell, Giles tells her to 'grow the E#% up' and goes back to his nice estate in Britain to leave her to contend with the Hellmouth and it's nightly crop of new demons. Yeah, no! I wouldn't let him dump his also-rans on my doorstep... one of whom insults her on the way in the door.

Giles basically reverted to the council's viewpoint: 'the slayer is our expendable tool...' yet he also expects her to lead and care for everyone... then he undercuts her publicly at every turn. Of course she doesn't trust him.

She turns to... Spike, Faith and Angel and eventually Willow for help. Yes, without them, they would not have stood a chance.

The potentials really contributed NOTHING until she gave them her power.

Basically, the only people besides Buffy, Spike, Angel and Willow who did anything worthwhile were the originals... Giles and Xander, and maybe a tiny bit, Principal Wood. We could have been entirely without the rest and they would not have been missed.

But, all this to say... of course, Buffy trusts Spike and far more than the others. of course, she is desperate to get him back from the first... I argue she would have gone after ANY captured scooby, btw... as she does for Xander.

Anyway... She's been burned by her own sister... the one she died for... The night she leaves the house, she is so far down the scale she is ready to give up. I think that's why she did such a horrible thing in kicking the man out of his house... In my opinion, that was one of the worst things she ever did... Though there's a good chance that if he got out of Sunnydale, she saved his life. Without Spike... I think Buffy would have died in Sunnydale or maybe just walked away. She had nothing left.

BTW, we see no sign of them rekindling things while he's busy being her chief lieutenant. So the Storm and Fury about her focus on Spike is a bit misguided.

In fact, by the end, ironically, she's very nearly the slayer the council wanted. Cold blooded... (though not heartless) She saw a fight she HAD to win, and everyone was fuel for the battle... just as ALL generals do. They may not want any soldiers to die, but you betcha that they're willing to send them all in if that's the only way to win. Please reference the number of deaths in WWI and WWII at a minimum. The 'good' side even bombed civilian cities. The US nuked Japan.

So, Buffy bringing 30 people into the vineyard and losing some of them? I'm sorry they died. But she was right to go in and right to go back. And right to consider everyone expendable because the cost of losing that war was the literal ending of life as we know it. In the end, she sacrificed Spike. I don't think that was a cheap sacrifice, regardless of their relationship or lack thereof.

Buffy proved herself over and over, often in spite of the council and the obstacles they put in her way. She sacrificed her life to save the world from the Master. She sacrificed herself to close the portal Glory made. She sacrificed the person she trusted most and who clearly loved her... and who she maybe loved most to save the world at the end. And she stayed around to fight, when a lesser person might have left Sunnydale the night they kicked her out... After all, they still had a slayer. And a watcher. Giles didn't want a slayer who wasn't nice and obedient. Why bother when they make it clear your views and your way is so unwanted, that your own sister kicks you out into hell without a safe place to be?

Oh yes, that dumb vampire gave you the courage to go on.

It's hard to believe that we are watching the same show.
Spuffy, as @burrunjor once succinctly put it, unfortunately put a noose around the series. It ruined Spike's character, and it was clear that it was a rehashed idea (a vamp with a slayer) and to appease a group of fans who wanted it to happen.

I've always been clear about my stance on this, and over the fact that I have a soft spot for Bangel AND for Briley. Spuffy was a disaster from the get-go. Now, if he were written differently, I might've been more understanding or accepting. But he's a jerk, and writers were bending their own lore for a single character, who should've been dusted, or moved on to AtS.

As a Spike lover and devotee, it pains me to see what they did to his character from s5 onwards.

I've said this before and I'll say it again - Buffy's rapist and abuser will never be 'end game' and will never be her 'soul mate'. That's just my opinion, one must think so little of Buffy if you want her to be with Spike. I want better for her. She deserves more than that.

I believe it was @thetopher who said in another post that Buffy never actually took an interest in him. Never learned about him, took an interest in his life, unlike her other boyfriends. She and Spike had nothing in common. With Angel, even up to s7, she had hearts in her eyes when she looked at Angel.

Buffy tells Angel (in Chosen) she doesn't envision a future with Spike - but one with him. The fact they only paired Spuffy when Buffy was at rock bottom and her absolute worst speaks volumes. Otherwise, it wouldn't have happened. S6 has been described as fan-fic - and it's easy to see why.

Just a note; no one is 'attacking' someone for liking Spuffy - just because one is on a forum that isn't full of Spuffies vehemently agreeing with you, it doesn't mean you're being 'attacked'. It's merely a difference of opinion. We're here for discussion and debate.

He loved Buffy. He loved Dawn and he loved Joyce.
I guess he loved Dawn so much that as soon as Buffy returned he forgot all about her and they never interact again. Well, except in s7 when Dawn threatens to set him on fire.

Spike changed for them. And when those changes were not enough, he admitted defeat and fought for his soul - something Angel did not attempt and Angelus would never do, btw...
Admitted defeat?

I think you mean, when he violently tried to rape Buffy - then realised he had no chance with her and she said, "Ask me again why I could never love you!" he then decided to try and win her back by getting a soul.

All the while blaming Buffy and calling her a "b**ch". True love at it's finest! 😁

He tried to copy Angel with the soul. Because deep down Spike knows Buffy loves and continues to love Angel. Which is why Spike even started dressing like Angel in s6 (and like Riley in s5).

I am solidly Cangel and Spuffy.
Two forced 'relationships', I think. Square peg, round hole. Neither work. I think some people like Cangel because it keeps Angel away from Buffy.

I NEVER justify his bad behaviour. I simply ALSO see his good behaviour and attempts to change.

What good behavior? What attempts to change? Spike gets the absolute best fxck of his unlife and is unwilling to let the young woman who fxcked him leave. Remember "the only thing better than killing a slayer is fx[cking one]"? That is Spike's "good behavior" and "attempts to change" with or without a soul in a nutshell.
I think that a demon who can change is something remarkable

A) Spike doesn't save Buffy because of any supposed empathy. Spike saves Buffy because he has the hots for slayers in general and the super hots for Buffy in particular. Remember OOMM? Where Spike decided he was in love with Buffy at THE BEGINNING OF S5. He isn't going to let his lust object burn. He wants her for other things. B) What Spike recognized is that he wasn't getting any more Buffy-sex unless the situation changed. Just like in Becoming, Spike is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. What he wants is Buffy, naked, back in his Crypt. I've watched Seeing Red's Crypt scene after the rape scene more times than I care to remember. Nothing between Spike's arrival and final departure on the motorcycle indicate that Spike cares at all that he hurt Buffy. He cares about what Buffy "did" to him and is determined to get revenge for that. I know what Whedon and Espenson said. BUT comparing their words to what they show just makes them crap writers.

So I used to be a hardcore Bangel shipper. For years, I was convinced that there was nobody for Buffy but Angel, but in recent years, I've come to change my stance and now I consider myself a Spuffy shipper....

Please turn in your shiny Bangel badge to the appropriate authorities at once! 😅

Great post. Summed it up.

It's funny how Spuffy fans think we hate Spike because we dislike the relationship and are team Angel. LOL NO I love Spike and that's why I didn't want that story as it slowly stripped all the things that made Spike, Spike and turned him into an inferior version of Angel in season 7.

Cangel meanwhile is the same except with Cordelia being turned into a clone of Buffy to make her a good fit for Angel. Why in both cases couldn't they just have left both characters as they were? I'd have rather had Spike and Faith get their own spin off after season 4, though I wouldn't have had a romance between them to be honest. On paper it sounds cool, but Eliza is too young for James in real life. (Forgot she was still a teenager in Buffy season 3, whilst James was younger than he looked.)

Him as a reluctant, sarcy ally to Faith would have been cool, with Clem as the guy in the middle.

Goodness, no. I've been a Bangel fan since the series was airing for the first time. I'm quite sure they have heavily influenced my shipping taste over the years.

Bangel, I think, is like the holy grail of ships for me. No other ship, from any other fandom, has ever made me feel the same as Bangel. Skyeward (Skye and Ward from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) is the only ship that has gotten close, which makes sense, because Skyeward  is basically just another version of Bangel when you consider some of the parallels between the two ships.

Bangel has never been just a teen romance in my eyes. There is genuine depth and love between the two, and though I don't believe in the concept of soulmates in the real world, I will definitely entertain it in a fictional world. And to me, Bangel is the perfect archetype for the concept of soulmates.

Spuffy has never really done anything for me. Mainly because I could never buy into the whole "spike loves her without a soul" thing. And also, I don't see anything in show, that makes me think Buffy would have ever pursued that relationship in the first place, had she not been deeply traumatized from being ripped out of heaven, and suffering from depression.

Goodness, no. I've been a Bangel fan since the series was airing for the first time. I'm quite sure they have heavily influenced my shipping taste over the years.

Completely agree and was on my way to type something similar when I got up to your post! Bangel has my heart, the first ship I ever sailed. The perfect (fictional) love story.

Maybe it is just because I saw it as a teen that it gripped me so intensely, but it continues to. SkyeWard being the best example and I must rewatch 😭 It is always the ultimate love story. I will never give it up, it is everything I want in my ships, shows and stories. 😍

Spuffy has always been a summer fling to me, much like @Joan the Vampire Slayer said, it was the most relatable within my own experience too. Using men for summer fun, it wasn't one party taking advantage of the other, both were using each other for needs unmet by the world. Spuffy has never been my OTP, but I appreciate seeing the relationship on screen.

Maybe it is only relatable and engaging to people who have been in similar situations, I'm not sure, but it was an important story to be told, especially for that age group at that time. Buffy named it for what it was, "I am using you". Buffy wasn't drawn back in to it, even when Spike tried to drag her back with force. (How many irl stay together years because the lust is strong?).

Spike loved Buffy. Buffy showed strength. That is significant. Buffy stepped up to end it, Spike left it seeking to be a better man. They continued to have a bond. Buffy wasn't broken by it. I am glad Spuffy exists.

They had such a goldmine of potential with Skyeward, and Wards character. I dont think I've ever connected with a male character so hard in my life. Even the little bit we got with Skyeward was just pure gold for me. A rewatch is on the horizon.

Agree. Spuffy was a much needed catalyst for both characters.

Let's make sure this doesn't turn into a Bangel vs Spuffy thread, and keep it about the original question.

Ummm..... Bangel v Spuffy is in the name of the Thead. Also it is very difficult to explain why one stayed or left without getting rather deep into why one ship is better than the other. At least it is for me.

No. I would say the older I get the less patience I have for all things Spike and Spuffy.

I still wish they wouldn’t have given up on a human boyfriend after Riley was axed, but honestly, the later seasons are almost unwatchable because of the mental gymnastics necessary to tolerate Spuffy.
The sex doll, the ”you came back wrong”, season 7… just a big NO from me.

So between Bangel and Spuffy, it is still Bangel for sure. But between Bangel and another pairing I’m far more open minded.

They barely created any tolerable characters post season 5, so I feel like expecting them to get an original character as a love interest for the main character five and a half season in, or even beyond that is a LOT to ask

I feel like it is more to ask to shoehorn an existing character into a love interest. Not to mention lazy.

The writers are supposed to be creative people. Generally a show never stops adding new characters, some work and some don’t. If they had dared to think outside of the box I am sure they could have come up with an interesting love interest.

If one looks at something like True blood they managed to create potential love interests over and over and over again.

Supernatural spent 15 years adding bew characters and love interests.

Why should BtVS be different and condemned to working with what they had? I mean it is what both shows did (including Ats) but it doesn’t mean it is what they had to do.

well, Buffy and Angel both had larger casts than Supernatural starring in the show, so they likely used up the various archetypes earlier. And it was about eight or nine seasons into twelve total seasons of Buffyverse TV when the problem started up

Friends did great with Chandler and Monica as a relationship
