Bangels only: Do you see chemistry in Spuffy?

his behaviour IMO doesn't indicate much more than the fact that he gets off on the thought of the violence.
So he got off on thoughts of Buffy. I agree. Granted it was doing violence to her, but how many times have little boys pulled little girls pigtails when they were attracted to them? It's the same thing. The seeds of Spuffy were sown in the second season. Hell, the very fact she was a Slayer made her attractive.

@brinkster130 I always saw it as a predator stalking his prey as well. Spike had no romantic interest in Buffy in Season 2, he was too wrapped up with Dru.
Everything Spike does is in the interest of stalking his pray. If that's romantic then boy, Angelus was more than just smitten with Buffy, she was his 'soulmate'.

There is no proof that Angelus was into BDSM with Darla, where there's numerous examples of pain and punishment being a turn-on with Spike.

Still doesn't stretch to him being obsessed with her to the degree the FFL flashback would have us believe. You could say the potential for Spuffy was always there simply because of what the figure of the vampire represents symbolically, but I don't see the intent in the sense that seeds were being sown. Vampires in the early seasons were always a metaphor for a threatening male sexuality, which is why Buffy had to kill them and Spike's behaviour is consistent with that.

Beg to differ: from Heartthrob:

Darla: "Of course when you finally did catch up with me in Vienna I had to pay for my sins, again and again."

Angelus: "Hmm, can you even begin to fathom the things that we did? Of course not. You're in love."

There's also a flashback in Untouched which shows them biting each other during sex.

Also in most of the interactions between Angelus and Dru she talks about liking how he hurts her. It's heavily implied throughout both shows that Angelus enjoys pain and punishment.

That's why I said if you go back and watch it with everything else in mind.

Don't beg. I never thought it was in any way related to kinky sex.

It's implied that what they did goes waaay beyond just kinky sex! They're vampires - pain, punishment, torture, blood, all pretty much equally arousing. Besides Darla wouldn't be so gleeful about it if there wasn't something sexually arousing about it.

Also it doesn't fit Spike's character to be infatuated with Buffy while being with Dru. He's shown to have a complete one-track mind when it comes to his obsessions. Besides, if Dru could sense his obsession after they'd left Sunnydale, how is it she didn't sense it all the time that they were there if it had already started with School Hard?

Of course he was infatuated. He kept watching her video over and over again. There were other signs of infatuation as well, but again, it was more about her being the Slayer. It then, through the years, transmogrified into... something else.

There's also Darla in both Angel and Dear Boy saying something to the effect of "you're hurting me, I like it/that's good" gives you an idea as to what their sexual relationship looked like.

Then what did you think Darla was referring to?
Could be numerous things. To numerous people; as they were wont to do. Which is why Angelus makes the remark about their not understanding because they were in love.

But my point is that there's nothing about his interest in her that goes beyond what you might expect from him as an experienced vampire who enjoys killing slayers. His reaction to the video is also exactly the same as the sort of interest he shows in Nikki. There's nothing yet there to indicate that he wants her (in a Spuffy way) more than he wants to kill her. That shift happens much later.

But Darla says "I had to pay for my sins, again and again." She's talking about what he did to her. I don't see how anyone can NOT see the sexual implication there. And why would he punish her by torturing other people?😕

It just depends on how you choose to view it. Certainly when he could not beat her and got beaten up by her mother there was more interest.

Why would he punish her by torturing other people?😕
Because he would not allow her to join in on the fun. She was in timeout. Had to watch Angel have all the fun by abusing sweet little innocent girls and then eat them while she couldn't.

😵😵Where do you get that from?

'Again and again' is obviously drawing on the language of sex, of coital exertion, and so makes the connection between pain and pleasure. Then there's Darla's gleeful tone and the body language between her and Angelus which emphasises physical intimacy. When Angelus says 'of course not. You're in love', he's suggesting that James and Elizabeth are so much in love - in a mushy lovey-dovey way - that they can't possibly imagine the depravity of what he and Darla did to each other.

Spike was also originally going to be killed off in Season 2 when the church organ fell on his head. It's only because the character was so popular that he was allowed to survive and was injured instead.

That's why I said if you go back and watch it with everything else in mind.

But that's retroactive. When Season 2 first aired, Spuffy wasn't a thing because Spike was meant to be a disposable villain. Everything Spuffy related happened AFTER Spike became a regular so at the time of writing Season 2, Spuffy wasn't part of it. Also in Lovers Walk, when Spike was still only a guest star, Spike says Dru dumped him because she thought he'd gone soft and wasn't "demon enough" for her any more. He even mentions that she said they "could still be friends" and the whole point of the episode was that Buffy and Angel couldn't be "just friends". Spike's actions of deciding to win Dru back don't make sense if Dru dumped him for any other reason than what he gave. Again, Lovers Walk was written BEFORE Spike became a regular. At the very least during Seasons 2& 3, Spuffy was never on the radar.

Of course he was infatuated. He kept watching her video over and over again.

Normally when you study something, you will repeatedly go over the relevant bits until you get the answer. In What's My line Part 1, when the vampires were trying to decipher the book, Spike told Dalton to "read it again". Spike was studying Buffy to work out the best way to kill her since it wasn't going to be as easy as he thought it would be in School Hard. He's looking at how she kills to see if there is any pattern to her moments eg if Buffy always drop kicked her opponents before staking them, then Spike would see that and know to avoid the drop kick when he fights her.

😵😵Where do you get that from?
Sample place you got your conclusion from. Subtext and reading between the lines.

you will repeatedly go over the relevant bits
And we learn to covet that which we repeatedly see. The rest of the stuff you mentioned had nothing to do with when Spuffy started or whether Spuffy had chemistry. But alas, I am not a Bangel and this thread is for Bangels only so I shouldn't even be posting on here.

I don't think his replaying the videotape is so clinical; it's not completely devoid of fascination. He uses the word 'resourceful' which is exactly how he described Nikki, adding that she was hot. So definitely there is a fascination, even a sexual one, but IMO it doesn't go beyond what you might expect of his vampiric nature at that point.

@DeadlyDuo I have a response to the rest of your post, which you may hate me for 😛. Basically it's about if you were to read the show as a whole text, then working retrospectively is a valid approach. Of course with episodic TV it's a little more complicated, but it's 1am so I will have to expand on that later since I really need some sleep!😉

@Mr. Pole Are you a Spuffy shipper?
I'm just asking because I posted this in the Close Your Eyes: A Bangel Fan Club and even put in the title Bangels only.
Obviously, if you are a Spuffy shipper, you will see chemistry in Spuffy, that's why I wanted people's opinions who do not ship Spuffy.

@Mr. Pole Are you a Spuffy shipper?
No. But I'm not a bangel either which is why I said I shouldnt even be posting. But most of the posts say SPUFFY ONLY or BANGEL ONLY and there weren't many threads for me to visit. So I thought I'd break the rules and post here.

There may have been some fascination but then anyone is fascinated by something out of the ordinary. Spike wasn't expecting Buffy to be as hard to kill as she was, so he was fascinated by how she could stay alive so well hence the "resourceful" comment. Kids are fascinated by bugs because to them it's something new and exciting, to adults it's just a bug.

That's like saying if Joyce complained of a headache in Season 1 then the signs were "there" that she was going to get a brain tumour and die. When something is written before the fact, and the fact wasn't even thought of yet, then you can't say that the something was written with the fact in mind.
