All we have so far is a tweet from "drhorrible" (the Whedon family's account) that simply says "Oy."
Now that I'm home I've been able to check out the relevant copyright and trademark notices.
The most recent Buffy product is the "Time of Your Life" trade paperback. On the copyright block it says:
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TM) & (c) 1998, 2008, 2009 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved. Buffy (TM) and all other prominently featured characters are trademarks of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. Fray (TM) & (c) 2008, Joss Whedon. All rights reserved."
And then it goes on into Dark Horse's copyrights. No mention of Kuzuis.
On the box of the Buffy season 7 DVD set, we have this:

Mutant Enemy, Kuzui Enterprises and Sandollar Television, and Fox Television are all listed *before* the copyright. That means it's a production credit, not a copyright credit. Copyright and trademark holders are listed *after* the copyright and/or trademark symbol.
So Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is the SOLE owner of the Buffy intellectual property. Neither the Kuzuis nor Joss own any part of it. Therefore, this movie can only happen if Fox is willing to kick Joss and his loyal fans to the curb to make this movie. Considering they weren't willing to greenlight a movie for Joss himself, I find that unlikely.
(I'm pasting this message to other boards and sites. Everyone should feel free to spread this message, and post back here if you find anyone knowledgeable who can contradict this conclusion.)

ive heard bad news about series i have cared for before but this makes me feel physically sick and realy sepressed and nim not joking. it makes me feel like the charechter connection made between the show and the audience has been desecrated and ruined. theyve taken away the charechters the fans spent seven years of theyre life following and loving and giving us a differnet buffy. not our buffy, not the one we cheered for, laugthed with and cried with! this is plain and sickeningly wrong! I URGE EVERY FAN TO SOMEHOW MAKE A STAND AGAINST THIS FILM!. we cant let hollywood take away buffy from us

Yeah i posted an article about this in another thread from Bloody Disgusting. com. and it will basically be a Reboot of the story no associated with the Buffyverse that Joss has created. I think they would be stupid to try to reboot Buffy without any of the TV cast. They are just doing this because they say it has Franchise potential, and these days its all about the franchise.

Okay ~ I'm gonna jump on the happy train. Guys, Buffy is being revisited, it's exciting! More of the Buff means more people might jump on the series. We should be stoked...shouldn't we? And hey, Joss will certainly get his props for this I'm sure.

You can't really measure the success of any future movie by what the original one did, because that Buffy had almost nothing in common with the character that has been established by Whedon and the tv series. Anything made now would HAVE to take the tv show and the characters as they were established there into account. That's not to say that they couldn't possibly screw it up, but at least the finished product would be far more likely to at least resemble what we have come to see as the "real" Buffy.
Maybe he knows his fanbase is as die hard as it gets and the majority won't even entertain this notion, nevermind actually view it as canon.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping, too. Like all of you here on the forums, I can imagine this being very bad. For me, the difference between this and the other bad remakes/re-imaginings is that I actually really like Buffy. Catwoman? I could care less, and don't plan on seeing the Halle Berry movie. Friday the 13th? Halloween? Same, though I'm interested in seeing the original Halloween . I recently saw A Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time, and liked it quite a bit. I didn't absolutely love it, but the special effects were decent, the script was pretty good, and the acting was for the most part convincing. And yes, someone's remaking that, too, and its already at least at the casting stage, with Jackie Earl Haley as the new Freddy Krueger.
On to Buffy, if it's to be any good, here's what I'd like to see. If it's supposed to be darker than the both the original film and the series, then I'd suggest making the vampires creepier and scarier than they were in previous versions (the Master and the Uber-vamps would be good models to work off, though). I also think it would be interesting to see Buffy as a respected vigilante, a la Batman--visible and recognized by the public and public authorities. In the series and Season 8 comics, the authorities view Buffy as a public menace and threat to society/humanity, but don't acknowledge that she's also doing a good job fighting evil. And the general public isn't aware of her at all, which is rather strange. Granted, Buffy is a night owl, but most media outlets report events that occur very late at night, so that's not much of an excuse. True, it's probably a good thing that the TV series didn't dwell upon public reaction to Buffy's activities, because that would have detracted from the main plotlines. However, a movie might be able to devote more time to this idea.
It might also be cool to see more of the demon/human conflict that exists within Buffy, which the TV series and comic haven't explored in depth. I wouldn't recommend making Buffy too much like Batman in these respects, though, because that would seem too much like a rip-off of The Dark Knight. But how about a feature-length version of the alternate Buffyverse seen in "The Wish"? Yes, I've read that this episode has its detractors, but it is both a darker version of Buffy and one that doesn't bear much resemblance to the series that we know and love. Plus, it's sort-of canon, but separate from the main canon, so the filmmakers could do whatever they wanted to Buffy (even kill her after a few movies)--and it wouldn't affect the main storyline.

I understand what your saying and what everyone is saying who is supporting the film. I would crap my pants at the idea of MORE BUFFY! even if it was a 5 minute christmas special i would mess myself from excitement! yet here lies the problem, this wouldent be a million dollar budgeted hour and a half of buffy. it would be a hour and a half of people trying to to redo the classic charechters and mythology. the reason the remake of batman worked is because the old films became to camp and outdated. the comics progressed and became darker but the old films took the family turn so continuing it wouldent of worked. yet this isnt the case with buffy. Buffy was a TV show that was doing fin, its style and the buffyverse all worked! the fans love it so why make it differnet!

You're not wrong here. You're right about Batman becoming campy, but the idea was to revitalize something that was over. Everyone knew there wasn't anything left after Arnie said "chill" over and over and "Clooney" dawned the cape...but then something happened, they had a new idea. And it didn't need to fall in line with the originals...now I know this concept is blaspheming a bit, but the idea of starting Buffy from scratch in a new light, even if you take the core characters away and start with Merrick again instead of Giles would bring a new depth to the series we love...and to be honest, I don't think Joss would be royally flushed to the idea of a re-imagination. Remember, sometimes we're all just a little too close and we need to step back and remember something amazing could come from re-inventing the wheel. Hovercrafts...just saying.
