Buffy Season 11 has been officially announced. In a press release, Dark Horse comics announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 will be available this fall. The series will see the return of Chirstos Gage along with artist Rebekah Isaacs as Buffy and the Scoobies get back to taking on the supernatural.

Here’s the official synopsis of Season 11:

“After overcoming the struggles of Season 10, Buffy and the Scoobies give themselves a well-deserved break from fighting evil. Unfortunately, the momentary peace comes to a screeching halt when a supernatural disaster wreaks havoc on the citizens of San Francisco, and the gang is forced to save the world from imminent doom, again.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 is a 12 issue run with the first on sale November 23rd, 2016.

I really should start reading the comics. I read the Fray comics and really enjoyed it. Not sure I care for the synopsis for season 11 though.

I should get back into it too! 12 issue? Isn't that a lot less than previous seasons?

gahhhh,,,, I'm tempted to get back into comics, I was never a big fan of dark horse comics but I should get into it.

I enjoy the comics. More Buffy. Also more things to talk about and discuss. More material for fanfic writers to get their hands on. Already written two long S8 and S9 fics and a missing scene in S8 and a preS8 fic exploring Renee's character. They're inspiring.

Exclusive: 'Buffy' comic raises the Slayer stakes with a Season 11 Scource: usatoday.com

In case you were wondering if Buffy Summers still had a stake in pop culture, consider this: Joss Whedon’s about to begin a Season 11 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the actual TV series ended 13 years ago!

Through the magic of comic books, Buffy’s continued its saga past the seven years of the cult show in Dark Horse Comics projects with Whedon guiding the storytelling as an executive producer. Kicking off Nov. 23 and featuring the creative team of Season 10 — writer Christos Gage and artist Rebekah Isaacs — Buffy Season 11 kicks off with everybody’s favorite Slayer and her friends, the Scoobies, living in San Francisco.

What else you need to know to catch up: Buffy and Spike are trying to give a real honest relationship a try, the world knows the existence of the supernatural (Sunnydale falling into a Hellmouth will do that sort of thing), Giles is trapped in the body of his 13-year-old self, and thanks to the magic of comic-book time, Buffy is still in her mid-20s.

Gage gives us the exclusive scoop on what’s up for Season 11:

A supernatural disaster is afoot!

“Previous apocalypses have been of the world-ending variety, and they’ve tended to threaten toward the end of a season. This one kicks off Season 11, and it’s not quite world-ending — more world-changing. It’s the way the world changes that will provide new challenges for Buffy and the Scoobies, of a kind they’ve never faced before.”

Spike and Willow have juicy roles.

“Spike has been maturing quite a bit as he comes to terms with being in a normal, healthy relationship, and being one of the good guys. And now, just as he’s getting comfortable with it, that role is going to be sorely tested. Willow has become a leader of a Wiccan community, and it’s brought her a lot of fulfillment, but it will also bring new challenges as events of the story unfold. We really wanted to explore this facet of Willow that, while it’s been a key part of her character for years, hasn’t really been a major focus.”

There's a spicy blend of old and new.

“We’ll be introducing some new characters, including a Slayer named Morgan — is she ally, or enemy, or both? But old favorites like Harmony will still be popping up here and there. Andrew isn’t around much this time, but will show himself to be probably the smartest of the bunch. As Joss described one of his goals for this season: ‘Raise the … wait for it … stakes.’ We’re ramping up the intensity, and we want to really see how it affects these people we care about so much.”

Whedon still hearts Buffy a lot.

“Absolutely, or he wouldn’t be doing it. He’s incredibly busy. He can do anything he wants to, creatively: TV, movies, comics. The only reason he has to be involved in this is his love for the characters and telling stories with them.”

We might need Buffy more than ever.

“Well, she’s awesome. She’s a character so many people identify with, of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations and backgrounds. And Buffy is still very relevant. Joss mentioned some of the concerns and fears he has about the world, especially as a father, and wanted to reflect them in the story. We discussed the tumultuous times we live in, the way it feels like we as Americans, and as citizens of the world in general, are perhaps more divided than ever. And we realized that Buffy and her world are able to reflect ours as well now as they did at the turn of the century.”

SLAY, QUEEN!

Are the comics set in the high school days still happening by the way?

I don't think I'll bother tbh. I'm getting pretty tired of Buffy S10 and - depending on the events of the next two issues and a certain character death- I might bow out of the Buffyverse entirely.

Certainly the promise of 'more Spike and Andrew' prominence doesn't exactly tempt me to fork out for a new season, even if it a much, much shorter one (which in itself is telling).

I think I might read it if I'm bored or if I know something interesting is happening that issue. But in the "Slay the Critics" part of the latest S10 issue (#29) someone asks for Spike and Buffy to stay together and the editor replies "Done." so at this point I feel highly discouraged to read season 11.

I'm not against Buffy and Spike together.

But I am against a whiny impulsive regressive Buffy and a fluffy dog-like muscle-only regressive Spike together. S7 is enough. S10 is more than enough. We don't need another season about this.

I have really enjoyed S10 so far so am looking forward to S11. Can't wait to see where they take the story. I love Spuffy so it's all good for me. I do think the shorter season isn't such good news, but with the new high school comics coming in October, I think it's understandable

Hmmm, well I don't think they will make their lives easy but Spike in S7 and then in BtVS S8, 9, 10 were all consistent with his characterisation since he became souled. I wouldn't describe it as fluffy dog-like as he didn't return to Buffy post S7 for years and then he left in S8 and in S9. In his S9 mini he gained progression in both realising what he wanted for himself, not to keep wandering and 'belong' and in not wanting to be all about Buffy and stay on the outskirts any longer. So we have seen him this season following those developments and integrating into the gang fully. The Spike I have seen S7 to now has been very progressive and has only regressed when he crossed over into A&F last season when his behaviour was deliberately so, as Gage explained, because he was around Angel again and his insecurities flared.

They are obviously going to drag him through something in S11 that rocks the boat a bit more. Possibly for him, possibly then between him/Buffy, but it may just be individual. I would expect it to somehow tie to his self image issues and wanting to be in the light that tends to drive his story, and hopefully not about soul/no soul which is what drives Angel's story. Dru may even turn up which I could see being a difficult issue to deal with for him. But they probably wouldn't push it too much even if she did because Dru/Harmony have these free passes in the story, as if they are just comedy and aren't betraying/killing and not ever changing. I find them the most tedious personally. But anyway, it is hard to speculate without any idea of how they are 'changing the world'.

This is my point. Whenever he was away from Buffy (S2, S4, S8, S9, mini), he was level headed, capable of making plans and competent. But in S7 and S10, he was either a plot device or just one of Scoobies' minions. Since he's souled, he was not allowed to even make witty insults to the Scoobies any more.

Loyalty: Xander +1, Spike check +1.
Muscle: Xander +1, Spike check +1.
Comic Relief: Xander +1, Spike +0 now.

Do we really need another Xander who's not as funny as the one we already have?

It would be a nice change for the female characters to get something to do.

Willow, Dawn and Buffy have been completely overshadowed by the men this season. It's so disappointing.

So you don't want to read the heart-warming story of a stalker finally getting the girl? Shocking. 😉

He wasn't away from Buffy in S2/3/4 of BtVS, her presence/story affected his, he was either just being introduced, with a very different original shorter character plan, or he was being developed and starting on a larger overall path. His current story ties coherently back to the earlier seasons of BtVS too in the consistently repeated themes of self identity and yearning for the light, not just the later ones. His time post S7 through to S10 was positively about learning about himself souled, but it was also somewhat about running away from where he wanted to be and what he wanted, continuing to do that once he had realised it wouldn't be a good thing at all.

I don't think he has totally lost his snark since gaining his soul either or that he needs to be away from Buffy to make plans etc., I just don't get that. It is like the whole immortals don't change pov, that certainly doesn't apply to Spike as he constantly changes his situation when it isn't what he wants, as he has just done in fact. But of course he has somewhat changed in personality since gaining a soul, just as Angel does, and being/not being around Buffy has nothing to do with that. When his defences are high it can regress his behaviour, as we saw often in AtS 5 and in A&F last season and sure you may get more cutting quips, but this is within the context of a negative response mechanism and falling foul to insecurity. Integrating in the Scoobies is the result of self-realisation and positive progression.

Personally I really like him being a complete team member and don't find that makes the character any less complex or takes away the potential for him to have interesting individual stories just from being one, I can't see why it should. Spike has plenty of personal insecurities/issues to face that could be really compelling reading if done well and he is more likely to face these and continue to develop where he feels more at ease and his story isn't restricted by a good deal of focus being on regression. I appreciate that some people just don't enjoy the character as much souled, but he is different and that is what it is. I'd rather see his overall story continue moving forward and addressing those consistently raised themes than regress to being a character he isn't any longer.

Hmmm, well all characters with negative pasts can seem to be getting let off the hook by the good guys giving them the opportunity to change if you strip details/context away. Arguably at least Spike and Angel fundamentally change when they are souled, whereas the humans that have made bad/evil choices in the past are more closely tied to who they were at those points.

The comment was meant as a simple joke.

The main thing that bothers me about Spuffy is that's it's utterly boring and unequal. Buffy doesn't have a partner that will stand up for themselves.

I mean he even failed to break up with her! That's how whupped he is. Imagine this:

Heartbreaking sewer talk No. 1 in The Prom:
Buffy: (plaintive) I want my life to be with you.
Angel: (coldly) I don't.
Buffy: (pouting and stomping her foot) Well I do!
Angel (meekly) Okay then.

Ooh the drama.

Arguably at least Spike and Angel fundamentally change when they are souled

Spike didn't change enough when he got a soul, which is his main problem.

the spoilers I saw said Andrew is not going to be in S11 very much and Wilow is getting a much bigger arc.
