Buffy Season 8? Meh?

i think i read like the first 5 comics then i just lost interest. im a huge buffy fan but i dunno this just didnt seem like buffy to me... i think the main thing is that the whole plot of buffy is that ya know "she alone must stand agaist the vampires" but now that theres like 1000 slayers whats so speacal about buffy?

so should i give it another chance? how many issues are there now?
 
How many did you read so far?

Well, the show ended with Buffy making all potentials into slayers. So, any continuation will have Buffy as a slayer of many and not the Chosen One anymore.

I don't think being a slayer is what makes Buffy special though.

i think i stoped when something was happening with faith?

ya i know how the show ended. its just alot different now. with the only army of slayers and this weird orginaztion thing and they dont live in sunnydale. its just i dunno.
 
It is different. It's a new stage in Buffy's life. 🙂

I used to be so disappointed that there was no library in S4, but I got used to it with time.

ya true. i think the first 3 seasons were the best. i really didnt like a lot of what they did after that. it got better towrds the end tho. i think i could have done with out alot of seasons 4 and 5
 
A story where nothing ever changes = a boring story.

It's like any season of Buffy in that some people will like it and some people won't. I started reading because I had to know the "true" story of what happened to these characters after "Chosen", and I got hooked pretty quickly.

It's just moving the story to the next level. Buffy & friends get more powerful and need bigger resources and bigger challenges. Buffy and her Slayers have gone global, which was inevitable after the way the TV series ended.

There have been a couple of speed bumps along the way in season 8, but these final 15 issues are going to be a real ride.
 
Well, I didn't start to really like the comics until the Faith arc. And after Wolves at the gate issue (12-15) I was in love. Maybe you need to give it a few more issues?

It is different, but it's still Buffy. Sometimes you roll your eyes, sometimes you gasp, sometimes you actually laugh out loud.

If you see the comics cheap on ebay, give it a shoot. Sometimes the tradepaperbacks are sold really cheap as well.
 
The comics have been a little meh to me since issue 12. I still read them, but I don't take them as seriously anymore. It feels like Whedon will write anything no matter how crazy just because he can. Characters have done things I could never imagine them doing on TV. It's strange.

That's because it's not TV. Different mediums require different storytelling styles. In a comic you can't just have people sitting around talking for long periods like you can on TV.
 
Alan Moore can fit a ton of dialogue into his comics. Even in his Swamp Thing stories there is a lot. My complaint isn't the lack of dialogue anyway, it's Dawn the horse, the tree people, Batsu, giant mecha Dawn, the submarine, helicopters, etc. It's so crazy. The comics should resemble the show to some degree I would hope.

Just because it's a different medium doesn't mean they can't restrain themselves a little bit? Hopefully they will take the time to explain why vampires are popular and slayers are hated, because that to me is hard to believe. And it's been a long time since there's been a shocking (good shocking, not stupid shocking) surprise. Hopefully this arc will deliver. Even though I'm disappointed lately, I'm still a fan, just a frustrated fan.

But Dawn turning into a centaur and tree-people existing, etcetc isn't really the characters doing unlikely stuff, is it, just that the verse had... added some things.

Not sure what you meant with your first comment, it sounded like you thought the characters where out of character.

It's not like the show hadn't done crazy things. Buffy got turned into a rat, and so did Amy for three years. Giles got turned into a demon. Wesley talked to a talking burger. Yep, stupid, but the show had gone there before.
 
yaaaaaa... i dont think i will pick it up. i went to newberry comics today to try to get up to date on all my comics and i saw theres a papper back that was like 16-19 or something like that. so maybe if i see it at boarders ill sit there and read it when i drink a coffee but i dont think i can pay for it. im trying to get up to date on all my batman comics but its gunna take alota money and time and searching. i really can aford all these comics. i think that why i stoped reading in the first place over year ago
 
Well, not everybody is going to like the comics. That's just the way it goes, I guess. For me, each new issue is a highlight of my month.

It does seem like people are criticizing a lot of things about the comics that they wouldn't criticize if they happened in the show. This is how season 8 of the TV show would have been if there had been no budget constraints and no network censorship.

It's a fantasy story, guys. Weird stuff happens.

Sky, when I brought up out of character moments, I mean Buffy. Buffy has been around since 1992, and she's never shown interest in a girl as far as I can remember. I flipped the page of a comic book and Buffy out of nowhere is sleeping with a woman. No real build up to it or a great explanation either. At least not yet. Buffy's stealing is questionable as well. She's more extreme than I remember.

As far as surreal happenings on the TV show, yes, crazy things occured, but they didn't happen all the time, and with 144 episodes it didn't distract me. So in the show I'd see one strange moment every 5 to 10 episodes. In the comics, there's an absurd moment in nearly every issue so far. And as weird as some of the moments were on the show, they never became so dumb as a Godzilla sized Dawn stomping around Tokyo and battling a equally sized mecha version of herself. To me personally, it's just too much.

I'm still a fan, I want to make that clear, but sometimes the comic just goes out of control and has no limits or boundries.

Well, I mean, she regretted it...She thought the world was ending, so I guess she wanted to go out with a bang.
 
ya i heard about the lesbian thing... kinda weird. but sometimes people expeiriment and regret it when they are loney or confused i ges.
 
Buffy didn't regret it. At all. In fact, she did it again.

The whole "out of character" question has been dealt with a million times already, so I won't go into it again, except to repeat my summary: a character who never acts out-of-character is a robot. A BORING robot.
 
I like consistency personally. Are you saying that if a character acts out of character, you accept it and always appreciate random behavior even if it doesn't match up with their past actions? Basically anything goes?

Andrew, I've seen you on other boards and I know you're pretty hardcore about Batsu, so I don't want to argue it either, it has indeed been discussed to death, and no one will change their minds in the end anyway. We can agree to disagree.
