Buffy's last line...

Many folks claim that Buffy's last line was meant to indicate how she felt about Spike, but I see it differently.

If I remember correctly, it's Giles that says something like "Who did this" with reference to the big hole in the ground. It's then that Buffy says her last line, "Spike"

Isn't that more along the lines of answering the question of Giles rather than pronouncing her love for him?

I'm sure she admires him for the sacrifice he made and is grateful for it (cause nobody else could have done it), but does that indicate love?

I don't think it indicated love, I mean it just doesn't make sense that she would let him die without letting him know, because after she says it he Denies it, if she loved him she would have corrected him, and I don't care that the hellmouth was collapsing around her, she would have said it, also she wouldn't have kissed Angel if she loved Spike, and Spike accepted that in the end by telling her she didn't love him.

ok, different people have different views about this, but here's mine. (and i think a certain mod that goes by the name of SpikedBuffy thinks along the same lines i do.)

we all know that Buffy's last line of the show was Spike's name, that's a given. but if you look back at the line she speaks directly before saying his name, it gets a little more meaningful, at least to some people.

Buffy's last word, spoken to Giles: "Spike."

Buffy's last line, spoken to Spike: "I love you."

Put them together: "I love you, Spike."

Now, maybe i'm just seeing this from the eyes of a Spuffy shipper, but i'm pretty happy to say that, yep, i think she truly did love Spike!

I think it's more the idea that the last word we ever heard Buffy utter on the show, after over seven years, was "Spike". And that meant something. In terms of in the context of the episode, I don't think it's that important.

I never disagreed with you, but your logic is faulty. Buffy isn't stupid (well...) she's not gonna DIE because Spike doesn't think she loves him.

If you put it that way, I think it was just an answer and wasn't an answer to "Who do you love?".

I don't have an answer to this, but here's another possibility for consideration.

At least part of that scene is an in-joke. Giles asks, "What caused this?" Buffy answers "Spike". The next scene shows the Sunnydale sign falling down. I think this is either the 3rd, or the 4th time Spike has knocked that sign down.

So at least part of that scene is in-joke, but is it the larger part, or the smaller part?

It's like nobody actually watched the show. So, if Buffy was truly in love with Spike, she would have stood, while a cave was collapsing around her, and argued with Spike that she loved him??

Okie dokie, lay off the smokies.

You can be plainly shown on screen that Buffy was in love with Spike, Buffy can say she was in love with Spike, the shows creator can say she was in love with Spike. But that's not enough for some people.

She trusts him in Chosen, their passionate relationship, symbolized by the fire, is still going strong. It didn't burn out, it grew into something powerful.

I think it was just Buffy saying Spike did this she wasn't saying I'm in love with Spike she was answering a question. It has nothing to do with does Buffy love Angel or does she love Spike it's just her stating a fact and trying to let Giles know although he didn't see it Spike was capable of good things. She was trying to get a dead man some redemption.Now I'm not saying it means she loved Spike or Angel for that matter anymore or less she just wanted people to see that she could make a right decision. Anyway that's just my opinion.

I think that it was a great idea for Spuffy fans to have BUffy saying Spike as her final line it was so meaningful to me at least i loved how she said his name proudly and outloud and not scared I respected her for that, it was finally something characterstic of BUffy

I'm not exactly sure that it indicated love, but I'm pretty sure that it indicated some sort of affection. I found that 'Chosen' was a very good episode, though so many thought it could have been better.

Anyways, Buffy had feelings for Spike but I don't think that her answering Giles question and saying 'Spike' makes it love. She had some feeling toward him, though.

Lets be honest, the last line of the star in a popular show is always gonna be important, have a meaning and live on past the show, so why would they allow 'Spike' to be it if it had no significance.

We're not saying it didn't have signifigance we're just saying it didn't mean that she was in love with him. She was just simply trying to make a point and earn Spike some forgiveness.

But you are still seeing the meaning from Buffy's point of view. That way you only see it as answering a question...the bigger point is her last words on the entire show purposefully written was 'I Love you' and 'Spike'....now granted in the show there is a gap, but there has to be some significance to the writers, Joss, allowing this to go ahead instead of some awe inspiring speech like in 'The Gift'.

I'd have to agree with those who say Buffy didn't love Spike.

I think that in the last episode when she realized he was about to give his life she wanted to give him the one thing she knew he had always wanted from her....her love....so she said "I love you" and he knew she didn't mean it and called her on it....it was obvious to me by the look on her face when Spike said "No you don't" that she realized that he realized she didn't.

I genuinely think she said it more for his benefit than out of actual truth.

I'm not saying she didn't care for him because it's obvious that she did....but I really don't think it was love.

Therefore....her saying "Spike" as her last word on the show didn't indicate love....in my opinion.

At this moment in the series Buffy( the hero of a feminine show) decides to lie. To lie to a man that tried to rape her a year before. She decided to lie to him( just after her character made one of her most important breakthroughs) to make him feel better.. Complete nonsense. Idiotic thinking.
