Convince Me

Thanks but not going to.

I have given up on Firefly and this thread proves it.

I've read the passionate cries from Buffy fans on other threads for Buffy and Angel but this one, not many people cared. Can't be that great. Seems to confirm my belief that most people just like what Joss tells them and he told you lot to love this show so you did.

Ohh well.

I had faith that you'd come to your senses after the craziness of even CONSIDERING Firefly. Thank god you're not a Whedon mark, or else I'd have to remove you as a friend!

Sorry- that's my awful wrestling slang coming into play- a mark is someone who just loves whatever a particular person/thing/brand does, even if it's rubbish.

So a Whedon mark is everyone who loves rubbish like Firefly. 🙂

Now you've just SERIOUSLY got me freaked.

I am constantly berating people who just love Whedon and so whatever he tells them. Look around, you'll see.

In fact there is a thread called Overrated vs Underrated and I actually have Whedon as overrated and site this reason.

You really ARE me.

Whedon as overrated? You're baiting the torch baring mob!

But seriously, he wrote possibly the greatest two shows ever on television (Buffy/Angel) so it's a bit of a stretch to say he's overrated. I would call him just-about-enough-rated.

And I'm also a little insulted you called me a sheep. Sure I'll check out a show if it has Joss' signature on it, cos hey, I LIKE the writer. That's not any different from being a fan of a certain author. I certainly don't MAKE myself like said show just because Joss wrote it. THAT'S being a sheep. I personally think Firefly is great T.V. and Joss made Serenity for those Firefly fans, the guys that campaigned in papers and whatnot to get Firefly back on the air.

Jaynestown and War Stories were 2 of the weaker episodes. If I had to recommend a few episodes to a potential fan, I'd have gone with Train Job, Shindig, and Our Mrs. Reynolds.

I was a bit surprised that you didn't like Train Job or Serenity. If you didn't, then perhaps it's not for you.

I, too, must express displeasure at your insinuation that those of us who enjoy Firefly are sheep. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's entirely without merit and stupid and dismissable, and it doesn't mean those of us who like it are any of those things, either.

It's not just insulting it's stupid.

I love everything Joss has done, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Buffy Comics, His issues of Runaway and X-Men.

I would gladly say the only reason I checked out Runaways was his issues, then started from the beginning and found a new thing to pick up when I'm getting Buffy.

I'd agree it sounds like im a sheep, but the fact is the Guy writes well. It's not that shocking that the previous Buffy comics aren't as good as the ones Joss is involved in.

Not watching something or reading something because Joss is involved, just to not be following the rest of the "sheep" is pathetic.

But it doesn't really matter, cuz that only make it your loss, missing out on it.

Woah woah woah - I didn't say by liking it you are a sheep.

I check out all his things too - the people I refer to as 'sheep' are the ones that cannot give a decent reason for liking something he has done - and there are ALOT of people on this board and around the world that do just that.

There is a mentality that I have noticed among alot of fans that elevate this man to the status of god liek proportions and as I have stated time and again, he does have some excellent ideas BUT he surrounds himself with people who can run with that idea and make it brilliant.

I will use Lyri as an exampe of the average member of this board (some of you above fall into that) as a person who loves the shows Whedon has done, loves his other works and such but she is far from a sheep.

I have not used the term sheep on any of you guys BUT if you read my comment as a personal attack on you, maybe you are the ones that feel there is difficulty in giving an honest answer as to why you like something other than because 'Joss Whedon said I do'.

I have given Firefly a chance and it did absolutely nothing for me, I have read SOME arguments from some on why they like it BUT no one has given anything strong enough for me to go 'OK, I'll give it another shot'.

I also suggested that there have been threads on BB when someone has dismissed Buffy/Angel or asked why they should like it and we've had hundreds of posts from people arguing about the show, this one couldn't even muster any decent argument and post count until there was a little banter and even then it isn't about the show, it is about people feeling offended that they have been called something I didn't call them.

However, if you comment is directed towards Hello Cutie who made that suggestion, please make sure you direct your comments at her and not make it appear you are attacking my personal opinion - bless her though, she is big enough to stand up for herself🙂

Hello Cutie
Haha thanks for pointing the angry mob in my direction!
The first and only season of Firefly beats any individual season of Buffy or Angel.

Hello Cutie
But why?? This is what I mean- there's a statement, but no info to back it up that would make me want to find out if that's true!

I agree, if there's a problem with what I've said, direct it to me, I'll be only too happy to explain what I mean when I refer to people as a 'mark' in reference to anything.

I'm not saying that everyone who loves a particular person's work is a sheep- far from it. Just as BotD stated (reading my mind as per usual), that's not a problem and if you like stuff because you have a genuine reason for it, good for you. I use the explanation of a 'mark' for people who love certain works because of who's made/written/performed them, and not because of any actual merits of the work themselves... I love Buffy and Angel, but not Firefly, and that's nothing to do with Whedon, it's because I just didn't enjoy it. It's the people who come out and say 'Well Firefly is great because Whedon made it' that annoy me. It's not a good reason in my opinion to make me want to watch it, and it's not extolling any of the virtues that the programme itself might have- there's no 'well so-and-so are great in it', or 'the plot twists are really gripping', or even 'the underlying ideas and tones in this prog are really meaningful' [I'm making this stuff up off the top of my head btw, I dont really know anything about this with regards to Firefly].

If there had been arguements like that, then yes, more chance I'd watch it again, but to simply say 'Whedon made it', makes me think 'urgh, a mark- they don't have anything good to say about the prog and they watch it just because of Whedon'. I watching progs/films/actors/anything because of their actual merits, rather than because of who they are/what they did.

Sorry if I've offended anyone but I'm not calling you all marks/sheep/anything of the sort, I'm simply making a comment on my opinion with regards to people who I feel warrant that label.

Well If your not sure if you like it, or don't like it. That's a personal choice.
What really got me was a second hand copt of Firefly for 12 quid, that's about $28 to $29
I bought a new copy for $35, and it wasn't at a sale price.
I know most things are more expensive in Britain. How much is a new one ?

For a season of a show, take Dr Who for example, thats around £70 brand new which is $140ish.

For Firefly, I think I remember seeing it at £39.99 possibly going as high as £49.99.

We really are expensive for these sorts of things.

The annoying thing now though are shows like Lost and Heroes that do it split season DVD's and they charge £45 each when they first come out - thats $180 for a season!

No joke! I got my Buffy Series box set (with all 7 seasons) for $100 on amazon! I can't imagine if each season was $150+ I'd be broke(r)!

I LOVED Firefly, but didn't like Serenity very much.

Like it's been said before about Buffy, Joss does MUCH better in the long, drawn out TV format than the 2 hour movie format.

And even YOU know that it takes more than 3 episodes to create a real character! Naughty you!

I liked Serenity in that it was kind of a wrap up. I'd have liked a wrap up movie of Angel too....but then that would be all and I'd be sad.
But, the episodes I really loved. Although I can't say why, exactly.

Maybe it was just that over time, (maybe by mid-disk two) I was actually curious about many things and had grown to really like the characters.
Which was saying a lot because I HATE westerns and I'm not big on the whole "Futuristic Sci-Fi Space Ship, fighting against the "big government" thing." I saw Star Wars and I really have no interest in the same story.
But, I really liked it. The characters made the show.

I guess I am a "Whedon Mark". I seem to enjoy Buffy, Angel, Firefly and the comics.
I'm not a freak for the movies, and I don't watch random episodes of things that he writes. But, I prefer to watch things from beginning to end and I'm not going to waste months watching something just to see a few well written episodes.

Although, since Hello Cutie plainly says she watched them when it was on TV, does it not matter that it was all mixed up in a blender before it was put out on TV? That makes it at least a LITTLE harsh to call it rubbish.

If you take Buffy or Angel, mix them up and watch three random episodes, they're gonna stink too.
Just like it's not exactly "fair" to fans to say, "Well, I watched the Buffy movie and three episodes from the show in random order and I don't like it". Even seeing them all in the order they were put out on TV I don't think I would have liked it. I tried it, and it doesn't make sense. That's not Joss's fault nor does it make it a poorly written show. It makes it a show the network butchered.

It's peachy with me if you don't like it. As I said before, I don't like westerns or space-ship sci-fi. But, doesn't make it rubbish. And it doesn't make the people who DO enjoy well written TV with well thought out characters "marks". Nor do they deserve to be treated like their blind, stupid sheep who will follow a person anywhere.

It's entirely different from saying, "EVERY MOVIE Drew Barrymore has ever been in deserved an award for best movie of the year." It's simply saying there are three TV shows written by a man who develops his characters well and doesn't treat his audience as stupid idiots with a bunch of "You don't remember last season when this guy had a drinking problem and that character's birthday was in October and now it's in May" and recasts.
If he suddenly STOPPED doing everything I liked in the other shows, I wouldn't watch.
But, in Firefly, he did it. Just like in Buffy and Angel. Of course, you may actually have to watch the stuff in order. If you don't care what other people think, fine. But, for someone who's never seen it and another person who admits to have never seen it in order (and still not all of them because they weren't all aired)...how about not try and put down the people who have?

Thank you, that's what I was talking about!
Yeah, thanks but that is far from the point I was making.

Actually, I refuse to buy boxsets until they are alot cheaper. In store, these boxsets are still over priced.
My aunt bought it for me relatively cheaply from Woolworths, maybe you could try there?
