Did Angel Leave Buffy for legitimate reasons?

No they don't, and actually as we see over S3 they actually manage quite well, but I think the implication is that at some point they will be tempted and will give in. Then it's be Angelus all over again. It's not written so well but I think that's what we're supposed to take away from it.

At this point, I think there could be an STD metaphor, where one has a disease and the other doesn't, and to keep it that way, they can't have sex, but they still love each other and decide to be together regardless. This normal life thing is getting flimsier for me, but I do like the idea that Angel's self-doubt along with Joyce and the Mayor created this weird narrative within Angel's mind. It's a way more comforting theory than the alternative, the producers just need to get to LA for his own TV show.

They don't have to have sex together, but they have the desire to, hence the danger and all. Yes, perfect happiness is not equal to sex, but why risk it?

I've never really understood that part, either. Granted, that first time with Buffy resulted in Angel's moment of perfect happiness, but how could he ever have such a moment with her again, knowing the consequences? The very knowledge of the possible outcome would, in itself, keep his happiness from being perfect.

Angel would need a scenario where he forgets about Angelus, for him to lose his soul again, and apparently, that is Buffy's speciality.

I haven't read any replies, but I have to point out that whatever reason you have for ending a relationship is legitimate. Okay, I can think of some exceptions, but Angel's insecurities and desires are legitimate. He couldn't be part of a relationship in which he took more than he gave. He saw Buffy as a girl with options, unlike him, who was settling for someone much older and who came with serious restrictions. Buffy and Angel couldn't really share a life, not completely, and Angel thought she deserved better. Moreover, he didn't want to be in a relationship knowing that. I find his reasoning perfectly legitimate.

I know he has some decent reason, but he really lead with this you desire a normal life, even though we both know you can never have a normal life argument, which I cannot get past. Read the original post for the full explanation of why I really don't get this normal life thing he keeps pushing.

I really wouldn't call Buffy a girl with options. Her relationships are dependent on her slayer lifestyle and how willing her significant other is willing to understand and compromise his/her dreams and ambitions for the sake of the world. If Riley was joe normal, would he react like Joyce, Xander, Willow, or Oz? Then, he would have to make peace with the idea of Buffy going out every night, and the possibility of her never coming home. That is a lot to ask of anyone in a relationship, which is part of my problem with his insistence that she desires a real relationship. What was he picturing for her? She's a slayer; she's lucky she lived through her 18th birthday. What did he think was going to be this perfect future without him?

He was probably picturing the life that Buffy had with Riley which was about as normal as both he and she thought she would get. College parties, stressing over exams, beach football and cook outs with friends, having so much sex that the house becomes possessed... that kinda thing. She had that for a while. It didn’t work out but while she had it she seemed to enjoy it.

I can only imagine that poltergasm thing was probably a re-occurring nightmare for Angel. I guess she enjoyed it, but it could never really last right? Normalcy isn't her future, so what did he picture her end-all, happily ever after without him to be? I mean, what was the end goal in his mind?

I'm still feeling that he could have kept in touch, while he was searching for a way to anchor his soul. What's wrong with a long distance relationship here?

Feel like we are going in circles a bit. Suffice it to say you don’t understand why he left her and that i do. Buffy seems to understand as well from her convo with Willow and the talks she had with Angel in IWRY.

Yes, please share your wisdom. It's why I asked the question. I want to understand why he left because, as I see it, he really didn't have to they could still be together in some sense of the word. This is the old high school me, who was a hardcore Bangel shipper crying out in anguish, wanting her ship to set sail forever into all eternity. I am just trying to lay her to rest give her some peace and closure.
I have Spuffy, now, but like Buffy, there will always be a part of me that loves Bangel.

Let me say this. When i first saw this as a kid, in high school i was also heartbroken. I was very upset with Angel and i stubbornly refused to watch his show for years. In my old age i see it differently. Idk why?
