Question Did Buffy REALLY love Spike?

This discussion is one of the reasons, among many others, of course, that I really wish that there had been a televised Season 8, and that Spike had been in it, because I firmly believe that we would have seen a real, full blown, "To hell with what Giles, Angel, Xander, or anybody else says, Buffy loves Spike, and anyone who doesn't like it can go jump in the hellmouth," sort of relationship. Everything that happened happened in Season 6 was put fully behind them and, if not completely forgotten, at least resolved. Buffy had finally matured to the point that she could make her own decisions and not have to ask for or need anyone else's approval in doing so. There would have been no more, "I can't love you..." because Buffy would no longer be any reason to deny her feelings for a "soulless monster." That monster no longer existed, and would never be returning. In the monster's place was her Champion, and she would have finally been able to accept the fact that she did, indeed, love him.

She could even openly start wearing that skull ring that he gave her in Season 5 again. After all, she'd kept it all that time hidden away in her hope chest.

Well... I always personally got the feeling that in Season 6, it was very much a sort of self-destructive, need-to-feel relationship from Buffy. They beat each other up, they have sex, they're doing something forbidden, Spike knows her secret, and yet she is ashamed and disgusted about it. Spike is very clearly in love with her, his relationship with Drusilla clearly showed that he was capable of it, soul or no, but I got the feeling her "jealousy" had more to do with the fact that Spike had loved her for all this time, in a sense she was picking him up and putting him down whenever she felt like it, or needed it- like she can choose to walk away from him or try and move on, but is surprised, and not in a happy way, that the same might be true for Spike- though that might be because I don't have a very high regard for Buffy in Season 6 and 7... or even less high than usual, rather.

In Season 7, the lines are a bit more blurred. They're certainly more "friends" in this series, and Buffy trusts Spike as an ally- indeed, she trusts him above all others, as he will always back her up (because, y'know, people disagreeing with her is totally an indication of them not having your back when it matters, *grumblegrumble*), where many of her allies don't. He sacrifices himself to save the world. She's certainly sorry to see him die. They're certainly more than allies. And somewhat different from friends (I won't say that the concept of love and friends are mutually exclusive, I think platonic love can be just as wonderful as romantic love in some ways, but that's a different topic).

But certainly their final scene, I always saw as Buffy not wanting Spike to die, and trying to say goodbye, and saying "I love you", not as some kind of "pity" throw, but perhaps as something she feels that she should say/feel. And when Spike says "No, you don't", it's not with bitterness, but an acknowledgement that she's trying, and she cares about him, where a year ago she wouldn't have dreamed of saying anything of the sort.

That's how I saw it when I first watched the episode. But if Joss Whedon wrote it as them being in love, then I guess as far as canon goes, yes she did.

You know... I wonder...

Us Spuffies and people who believe Buffy loved Spike are always having to give evidence she did. I'm wondering if the other side can do the same. So other side... people who believe Buffy wasn't in love with Spike... Can you justify that opinion with examples from the text as we Spuffies do with ours all the time? I'm just wondering because I see no evidence that she didn't love him. People are always saying "There's no evidence that she loved him" and making us defend our position... but is there evidence she didn't?

No. Probably not. I guess it's mostly about what you feel when you see them together, you know..

I do think she loved Spike and there will always be debate about if she loved him more than Angel. I think she loved Spike at a different time and in a different way. She didn't say she loved Spike all the time but that made it great and showed how much she did care in a way make sense?

But overall I do think she loved Spike and she was in love with him.

Just not loving that line. The first time she said, she loves him and it's without any sentiment. At with Wes' slip, about Lilah, it was a poignant moment, but with Buffy it was played out without any feeling or reflection. Also, no one ever thought that she loved Spike as far as we are aware so it doesn't even make sense. Don't like it at all. Spuffy deserves better.

The line in the shooting script is actually:

BUFFY
Move on? Does everyone in this house think I'm in love with Spike?

But they kept Sarah's slip in the final episode, as we can all see. Still, it's a bit of perspective into how the line was *originally* meant.

Kind of interesting that she would word it that way. Little insight into what SMG thinks of Spuffy perhaps.

I like SMG's "slip" though. That one little word makes a difference in my book :)
Before season 7, I don't really think she actually loved him despite being heavily infatuated with him. In season 7, I think lines were crossed and she did love him. How much, I don't really know, but she, in some way, romantically loved him.

I think Spike's response to her is equally as valid as her telling him she loves him because he can see that there is some level of love left to be reached before she could really be in love with him in the way that she actually wants to be with him in a real relationship. There are levels of love and I think that Spike and Buffy were referring to two different types of love and were both completely honest in their statements.

StarSlayer agrees: I like SMG's "slip" though. That one little word makes a difference in my book

I like the slip too! One of my favorite moments of that episode. 😀 I'm glad they kept it in actually.

Hm. I'd like to say that she did. But I really think that she didn't. I never thought what she had with Spike was love. It was lust, it was passion. It was lustful passion and it was sex and it was making out but it wasn't love. She never actually loved Spike. He may have loved her but she never loved him.

However, I know this isn't the Bangel vs. Spuffy thread, but Buffy DID love Angel. I think more than anything this was shown in The Prom, Graduation Day Part 2 and I Will Remember You. She'd have never done any of those things for Spike. She may have felt strongly for him, but it was most certainly and would never be love.

I disagree, because if you're talking about Buffy in the earlier seasons vs Buffy in the later seasons & her love for Spike vs Angel & things she would or wouldn't do - it's different.

Yet, you know what they say. "Great love is wild, passionate, and dangerous." 😉 And I don't want to go into any shipping wars, but I'm really curious. Buffy and Spike in s7 was hardly lustful IMO. So, I'm curious how you see their relationship in s7 if you don't think it was love because I think many scenes in s7 show that it was love. 🙂

I just didn't think what they had in season 7 was anything. (don't kill me) if anything it was pity on Buffy's part.

Totally agreed. Their relationship in Season 7 was handled VERY deliberately, IMO. No other way they could've done it, what with everything that happened in Season 6.

On that note, that's why I really like SMG's slip in First Date. The fact that they kept it in there when it changed the meaning of that sentence so much says a lot.

Exactly
If She Wasn't in Love With Him ...

... if we're not convinced that she was in love with him, then the writers failed of their aim. They were pounding it into us. I just finished watching "Potential," where Rona, seeing how tenderly Buffy cares for the injuries she thinks Spike might've received, asks, "Are we supposed to make out with them or something?"

The way I see it, the writers mainly want a good story. Which way makes a better story, if she really loves him, or if she doesn't really? What do you think?

Must add ... if it possible to earn love, then he earned it.

I love Potential for that. /girlish swoon

I disagree. I think the writers used subtle ways to show Buffy loved Spike. If one doesn't see these ways, then I get curious to know what they do see. It's like watching any movie or TV show. You may not notice things after your first viewing, but when you notice something after the second, third, or 100th time, you may begin to like the story even more.

With Buffy and Spike, there were the occasional lines referring to their relationship, like the one who mentioned in "Potential," but it wasn't like Buffy's relationship with Angel. Yes, the beginning of s7 kept you wondering if Buffy really loved Spike (or even if she could forgive him after the bathroom scene). But, as I watched the season, and how they communicated with each other (through words and no words), it was obvious to me that she did. No one can convince Buffy didn't love Spike (mainly in a romantic sense) because I saw it threw her actions and words in the show, as a result of both the writing and acting. So, I don't think the writers failed at all.

I think Buffy loved Spike; but the type of love is debatable.

Some people think she was in love with Spike romantically.
Some people think she loved him for the man he became.
Some people think she loved Spike as a champion.
Some people think she loved Spike for standing by her in a hard time.

Personally, I think she loved Spike for all the reasons listed above. But I can see why people have different opinions about her love for Spike.

I think one of the reasons why she hated herself in season six is because part of her wanted to love him. Knowing what he was and still developing feelings for him made her feel wrong. I'm glad that Joss stated once and for all that she was in love with him; even if people choose to disregard it. After season eight my anticipation for season nine is based solely on the story between Spike and Buffy; and Faith's journey.

They succeeded with me! I think she loved Spike. And they succeeded with you. Apparently some of our fellow fans aren't convinced. I admit I'm puzzled how anybody could miss it. The ways the writers conveyed it to us were subtle, perhaps, as you say, but seemed definite and unmistakable to me.

forgot to mention ... Remember Cassie? She predicted that "Buffy will tell you". She had a gift of supernatural penetration, and she thought Buffy loved him. Or did she mean, "Buffy will lie to you to spare your feelings"? I don't think so.

Sure, she actually did say it in Chosen right before he died, but my impression of that is that Buffy said it just to be nice to him since he was sacrificing himself to save them all. I think it`s obvious and easy to tell that Buffy tried really hard to say it and look believable at the same time. She struggles. But even Spike can tell that she`s lying by saying "No you don`t. But thanx for saying it!". In other words "thanx for trying to make me die as a happy man".

Putting my shipper voice aside for a moment, I have to disagree with the "Spike can tell that she's lying," statement. On a one occasion Joss himself has pointed out that the moment Buffy says "I love you," to Spike in Chosen she really does mean it and she really does love him.

"Spike is the person in her life right now. What I basically told [James and Sarah] was, 'Play the romance, be proud of him, love him when you say you love him, love her when you say she doesn't love you. Forget about the crumbling world, for that period of time it doesn't exist." ++ Joss Whedon

This was in reference to the scene you're discussing and comes directly from Joss Whedon himself. So the statement that Spike knows Buffy is lying when she says she loves him, cannot possibly be true. It can be an opinion and it can be yours and anyone else's who chooses to adopt it, but it cannot be a fact or else Joss wouldn't have stated the above.

Grab a cup of coffee and some nibbles my friends, because this is about to get wordy. And also quite possibly where I become a little bit too shippy for my own good.

What this scene has always said to me (even BEFORE Joss confirmed it with the above statement) was that Spike loved her when she told him that she loved him and that Buffy truly loved him when she said it, and because he loved her so much he denied that she loved him so that she would let him go and do the one thing that she's always wanted - live her life normally.

I don't believe that Buffy would have told Spike that she loved him, if she didn't. I don't think that is a word that comes so easily to her. She said it to Angel, she said it awkwardly in a conversation about love with Giles, and at the end in Chosen she has said it to Spike. Do I think that she would have said it if the world wasn't about to be ending? No, I don't. Not because I don't believe she loved him, but rather because I think she did and it just didn't need to be said.

I think her actions, the way she believed in him, the way that she changed him, the way that she put her faith in him and gave him that confidence that he could be a better man - those are all of the ways that she said she has loved him over the later seasons and those ways were just as significant or maybe more so being as subtle as they were than the big, "I love you," in Chosen.

I mean, her statement that she's not ready for him to not be there is enough and the fact that she pointed out to Angel that Spike is in her heart, that's love enough right there. I'd like to believe that if you love someone as faithfully and unconditionally as Buffy loved Spike and you were given that comfort and support unconditionally no questions asked or anything expected in return - that when you were at your most vulnerable state - then yes, that is love. And in loving someone like that, I believe Buffy when she told Spike that she loved him.

Now, I've probably mangled something that has a Jane Epenson ring to it, really I can't remember who said it and to be honest I'm coining another friend (the_royal_anna @ livejournal) of mine in the Buffyverse, so the thought belongs to her. I just borrowed it to make my point.

I saw this scene play out one way while I was actually watching the night it aired and I've seen it play out so many different ways since, every time I re-visit it. But one thing was ALWAYS clear to me from the very beginning until the VERY end, Buffy LOVED Spike. I mean, she REALLY LOVED Spike with everything she had. And it was so beautiful.

And so when he says to her, "No you don't. But thanks for saying it..." and then goes on to say, "Go on then..." - " No"¦it's for me to do the clean up" - "Gotta move, lamb" - " I mean it, I gotta do this " - " No you don't" - "Now go!"

This is Spike doing what he does best when it comes to her, what he will always do wherever Buffy is concerned - protecting her. Telling her that, "yes, I know you love me - I've always know it - but I'm not going to let you die down here with me while you've still got life left in you, so I'm going to act like I don't believe you, thank you, and then give you some instructions to follow." And that is EXACTLY what he does here. If you watch the scene and really pay attention...he says, "Go," and then he proceeds to tell her this is what HE has to do and SHE can't be part of it, and then he says, "Now, go!"

And what he's really saying is, "I love you and I know you love me, but you have to go and live your life now and I'll do this because I love you."

Dying to protect to the woman he loves, so that she can live.

I don't need words to tell me that Buffy loved Spike or that he loved her. All I have to do is look at their eyes and the way they're emotions are speaking for them. It's beautiful. And do you know, I think I would have been completely okay if she hadn't said it much in the way Cordelia almost said it to Angel BEFORE she stopped herself. It was already know that LOVE was there and very much present.

But, I think the fact that Buffy did actually say it out loud and looked him directly in the eyes when she said it and meant it from her heart after telling Angel that Spike was IS in her heart, means something so much more that I don't think I can quite put my finger on.

Spike knows that he CAN'T let her burn with him, so what does he do? He gives her herself, he gives her her freedom, and he let's her go in the only way that he knows how even when he can see every atom of her being loving him in that moment, he let's go and choses life for her instead of darkness with him, ashes that have burned away. He will be remembered, he was loved, and more importantly he knew that she loved him and he can die knowing that she will get to live her life.

How can you argue with love like that or question whether one did or didn't love the other when it's so painfully obvious they did. They BOTH did.

Is that it, am I done now?

//Em...I hope I haven't stepped on anyone's toes. Sorry, if I did. I wasn't trying to lecture or say anyone was wrong in their thoughts, these are just my humble opinions. Take them as you wish, please remember there was no harm meant. 🙂

Wow!

I never thought the reactions to this question would be so massive!
Obvioulsy there is a lot of Spuffies in here (I am NOT one of them!), and it almost seems like people gets offended when their "love" is being questioned. I am not saying that anyone is being rude or anything, but it`s clearly that this is not a popular question in this forum. lol!

Well, IMO, Buffy didn`t love Spike. Not like in a romantically "I want to spend the rest of my life with you"-kinda way. To me she loved him as a friend and for the man he had become. A partner. A champion.

That`s how I see it.
