Well that would explain it! "The Monkey's Paw" isn't really pop culture, not our pop culture anyway. In short it's an old fable about a magic monkey's paw that grants wishes, but with every wish comes unimaginably terrible consequences.

I haven't had a chance to read it yet but the woman who rec'd it to me said it is terrifying...and she doesn't scare easliy.
This entire season has been laced with the theme of this story, "Be careful what you wish for".
I mean the very first words of this season were "The thing about changing the world is, that once you do, it's all different".
Buffy wanted to be a normal girl, she didn't want to be the one and only. She got that wish but look at what it has cost.

It's a really great story. I wouldn't call it terrifying, though. Especially in view of what passes for entertainment in the horror and terror genres in the movies. It's downright tame. You might notice a similarity to a Season 5 episode, though.
