Spuffy is a polarizing 'ship. Most complicated, messy ones are. Fans either hate or love them. There is no in between...at least that I've seen, and I've been in this fandom for a while.
I think 'shippers tear down other 'shippers - in all fandoms - because they feel threatened by the competition. Spuffies feel threatened by Angel, and Bangels feel threatened by Spike. Because no matter what anyone says or believes, Buffy loves
both vampires, she's said so.
This is what I'm trying to figure out. Angel was fine when it was his time. So was Riley. So was Spike. Different people like different aspects of the show. Why can't people just say which character they liked by stating what they liked about them without saying I liked him and this other guy was horrible in contrast because? And why can't people say I liked this character without a whole bunch of people saying why you're wrong? Why does it have to be a competition? Do you know after I posted this thread someone copied it for both the Bangel and Briley forums? Imitiation is supposed to be the sincerest form of flattery but I can't help but think it was actually a slam. Why are they monitoring a spuffy forum to make sure we're not talking about Spike in a positive manner that we might enjoy. Maybe I'm just not competitive enough in my ship to be on these boards. I thought it was more about fun and talking about what we loved about the show than proving to strangers why our opinion is more right than theirs.
It
is about fun and discussion, but hardcore fans like myself and many who frequent this board, have strong opinions, and well yeah, we like to express them.
Fans compare Angel and Spike so much because they're both vampires. It also may have something to do with the fact that Angel is so morally superior, and Spike, well...isn't so concerned with black and white, "right and wrong"...he's more fluid, lurking in the grey areas, and sees morality as more subjective than Angel does. Does that make sense? So when someone tears Angel down for doing something evil/crappy/mean, etc someone always pips up with "BUT SPIKE WOULDN'T DO THAT!" or whatever. Or vice versa.
ANGEL WOULDN'T RAPE BUFFY!
SPIKE WOULDN'T LEAVE BUFFY!
ETC
Tearing one character down makes the other look better...for a while, but a good, interesting argument doesn't use comparison as a means to make a point.
To be fair, fandom is
all about opinion. Fans love giving their opinion. It's what we do. We analyze, we argue, we theorize. I, like you, just wish we could express them without having to tear others down if theirs don't match ours.
Once a fan told me that, because I 'shipped S/B, that I was immoral. It actually really affected me, and I think even now I'm overly sensitive because of it. Judging someone's character based on their preferred 'ship, or TV show, or book, or whatever is
not okay. Ever.
